Why is a linear scent profile mentioned as a negative when it is literally a positive?
Why would I want my fragrance to change? I want it to smell good from start to finish.
>>
>>18767261
Some people like an evolution in the fragrances. It’s like listening to a song. You want it to have a clear beginning-to-end progression instead of just the same tune and beat repeated for six minutes.

If you don’t like that, that fine too.
>>
>sotd(+probably also sotn): sadonaso

Trying out the FOMO Envy dupe. I haven't smelled the real thing, but this dupe reminds me of Opium PH's warm/spicy/creamy base combined with some 80s chypre facets. Not bad, but I wish it had the incense and ginger I see in the original's note breakdown.
>>
>>18767346
At first the original smelled like a sweet ginger throughout, I almost described it as gourmand-ish. Once someone mentioned the animalic notes I noticed that a lot more. I personally don't get a lot of incense but I do get a bit of smoke and leather. I'm always surprised by how sweet it is.

DIY perfumers
How much should I expect to spend as my initial investment into DIY perfumery.
>>
>>18767351
Even the dupe is a touch more animalic than I'd expected. I'm not sure I'll ever try the original since it's so rare now. And anyway, I'm always happy spraying Floris Santal which might be a more subdued cousin of Envy.

I normally hate on Middle Eastern frags because they’re cheap clones; these two aren’t. They’re actual new fragrances, made by seasoned perfumers who can balance the newer aroma chemicals you almost never see outside the Middle East. I like them both.

They both exhibit signs of being middle eastern though; both sweeter than they should be and quite "loud" but both surprisingly decent and interesting.
>>
>>18767445
There’s gonna be an Anon that responds before too long shitting on the brand and complaining about how they’re owned by fruit in liquid form, but I think they’re okay. They’re not the best, for example I’d get ELDO first, but they’re a fairly diverse collection of scents.

Zoologist is even larger, more varied, and more expensive, if you just feel like turning it up to the proverbial 11.

In short, if you have the money to burn, yeah, sure. If you’re concerned about cash there are probably a few choices that give better bang for your buck.

Should I cop? I tried this and GIT which was too green for me but SMW was nice
>>
>>18767445
Honestly no, even at the promo for the full works they have right now, they're very mid. They have maybe one or two good frags, and their best one (Cobra & The Canary) is discontinued. The rest are either decent but don't last long, or are bad but don't last long either.

It's a sad day when Heretic is a better recommendation for an "insta-brand" to try by comparison, but at least their stuff smells somewhat artisinal, and their discovery sets are better value.

What's your criteria for selling frags? Do you get rid of some or do you keep it forever until you want to use it again? I only have 7 bottles and wanted to get rid of one, but now I tried it again and I do like it, I just don't use it so often and forget about it, which makes me detach from that scent
>>18767261
Same way some frags can have "polarizing for being oldschool" as a negative, it's about taste but some people don't enjoy those qualities. A frag being linear is welcome is some cases, like for citrics and white florals for me, but sometimes I want a frag to evolve along the day.
>SOTN Ultramale
>>
>>18767445
I paid $130 and it was a ripoff, even at $89 it's a waste of money. You can get full bottles of some amazing fragrances for that money.
>>
>>18767488
I dont sell because i'm impatient and slightly autistic. I can trade in games easily but not irl. Those which were an unnecessary buy are stored in a box, collecting dust. Keeps me in check to spend money on necessary things only.
>>
>>18767510
Selling, for me is like this
>Hi ive put up this bottle for sale, 80% full, legit, you can check the atomizer and stuff. $50
>Hi can I buy? Is it full?
>Sure. The juice is 80% tho.
>Is it legit? Can I see the atomizer
>Hi, yeah it’s in the photo. Also here’s the batch check
>Uhh how much?
>…$50
>Do you have (something that i did not put up for sale)
>Uhh no that’s not what im selling

just came back from a perfume making class.
we did a quick hour of theory to learn about the structure of frags and to test individual oils/fragrances. the rest of the class was to make your own 50ml frag, about 15% concentration.
i struggled to come up with the direction i wanted to make. initially i aimed to do a fresh and woody versatile frag. i ended up making a frag with a heavy base on olibanum, sandalwood, tobacco, oud, leather, some patchouli and oakmoss, iso E, galbanum and an ozonic note. it was essentially two accords, one fresh&airy that will be mostly present in the opening, and the other dark&earthy for the heart and base.
my guiding line was to make a churchy scent in the forest. really excited to see how it matures in the next month.
definitely a fun hobby i'll keep pursuing.

Thinking to pull a trigger on this sample pack from Abel as it kind of fits into what I described. Has anyone tried their scents?
>>
>>18767983
i was told that it will change quite a bit in the following month, even more so because i tried to make something a little more complex. i did however spray it right after i made it just to get a sense of it and it was a lot lighter than i expected. despite the heavy base, i was getting a lot of the ozonic notes mixing in with the tobacco and the galbanum. the incense gave it a cold and austere feel to it. i was exepcting something a lot harsher and darker since i went heavier on the base notes. i think i could have put in more patchouli, but i'll see in a month

I also enjoy Desert Rosewood, although it’s a bit less innovative and more so another well done version of commonly tread ground.

i am looking for some dark, earthy and offputting frags. things like Cuoium or something heavy on an earthy patchouli. i have enough crowd pleasers in my collection and i am looking for some unique frags that require an acquired taste to appreciate. something like The Black Knight from Bianchi or something that people will find polarizing.
Any reccs?
>>
>>18768301
Pineward has several frags that are brutally earthy, dark, and dank. Like ripping a sopping hunk of wet earth from beneath a tree during a thunderstorm, stems, roots, and all, and inhaling it deeply.

He also has some that are only mildly off putting but still rather earthy and raw.

If you’d prefer more scent of wet limestone and less wet soil you could grab Olm from Zoologist.

Tonnerre is dark and mostly all smoke, but also rather challenging and enjoyable. Like standing near a smoldering bonfire for a few hours.

Hyde is a relatively similar fragrance to Cuoium if you like that but want something different.

Bull’s Blood or Tyrannosaurus Rex can get you more evolution with your smoke and leather notes.

how would you rank the btv on a price/quality scale? i guess you wont call it slop since you bought it, but does the juice justify the price tag? compared to the cool water which is still good while being given away for free almost
>>
>>18768304
No fragrance ever made justifies the price of any BtV, even at discounter prices. It’s a Veblen good. They jack up the price so people will assume it’s good.

Going on a date tomorrow. Can't decide between bringing a sample of Divine Perversion and PHI Une Rose de Kandahar.

Well it is all subjective I guess, you should spend whatever you feel comfortable spending.
I love Iris and I needed a Dior Homme Parfum replacement, this satisfied that itch for me and I got it for 200 EUR which was acceptable to me, I would do it again.
I personally wouldn't spend more than 2 EUR per 1 ml (MAYBE 2.5 if it blew me away), but that's just my own threshold where I would feel guilty spending that much.
There are plenty of great frags for cheap so if you are on a budget and just care about price/quality I probably wouldn't recommend it no.

>>18768312
The btv for 200 euros? Nice, the prices I've seen and thought of are nearing 1k € for some editions, but must have been a special release. Some high end houses got prices all over the place.
My cutoff point is around €100 (100 ml+) , €80 for 50ml and below, depends on where you live and your income I guess. At least there are some decent releases in this range.
>>18768306
I had samples of really expensive stuff and my reactions were usually "this is it?" or "nice", but never roaring up with a red face while shooting ropes of extasy, like reviews would suggest....

It appears their official prices in the website range from 1700 to 270 EUR for 100ml which is fucking crazy lol.
The one I got officially is 355 but I got it for 200 at a discounter so for me that is worth it, for someone else it may not be.

i may cop the discovery set from Beaufort and Pineward. i have been looking for a foresty scent so Pineward is what comes up the most. for Beaufort, i own Iron Duke and really like their DNA so i'll definitely give it another look.
i think i had an issue with birch tar as a note. it comes off a bit too BBQ-ey. i will try Rhino again though. the spot i go to should have it, but im not sure if he'll have Olm. i recall he didn't stock Civet not Hyrax.
would you reccomend anything else from Orto Parisi? i've only ever tried Cuoium, Megamare and Bergamask. i feel like Brutus or Terroni might be cool
>>18768310
yeah i'll for sure try Rien. love incense.

I was getting ready to warn you how Pineward’s full discovery set is great but quite expensive, and then I just double checked and it’s $200 for about 90 ml, which actually isn’t as bad as I thought, and frankly is a steal considering the variety you get.

BUT his work still warrants the disclaimer the skin stain is a real thing for *some* of his fragrances! A fair chunk (maybe 2/3rd?) aren’t safe for white shirts because they’re so highly colorized (darker shirts are fine though) and maybe ~6 or so will actually stain your skin until you rub them in.

Still though, he has fantastic stuff.

Beaufort is kinda hit or miss, I also own and love Iron Duke, Tonnerre, and Acrasia, but their recent releases have been pretty meh and Absent Presence was a total miss. R&R and T&M are kinda good though, upper mid imo.

Hyrax is one of those art piece fragrances. They maintain it because it fills out their catalog and is interesting. Like Secretions Magnifiques. Civet is actually good though, cozy. I liked Beaver better but they discontinued it for some reason, genuinely curious why. Olm was supposedly an April Fool’s Day joke originally, but then they started fully stocking it. A bit art-piece-y as well, so wouldn’t be surprised if your local stockist didn’t carry it since it’s never going to be a big seller.

Orto is okay, interesting. I enjoyed the experience of them, not sure I’d ever want a full bottle. Viride is blatantly earthy green, probably could pass for a Pineward. Terroni had an interesting black licorice scent to me, spicy sweet but also earthy.

In short, if you have the money and can source samples, yes, sample Orto.

I'd recommend you try out Meo Fusciuni. I got all of their collection in samples and landed on a full bottle of Last Season. Very earthy, herbaceous and raw leather. Like old leather boots you dug up off the forest floor with roots and herbs growing through it. Definitely an acquired taste and addictive for me, having liked and copped a bottle of Black Knight previously.

The reason I'm having this date in the first place is I had Incense Rose in my pocket when I met her. Can't tell if it's plus aura to give another Tauer (I removed the label and she doesn't know what it was), or if it's plus aura to give her the different and more arrogant Divine Perversion.

It's also my birthday. She's coming to visit me and I'm nervous...
>>
>>18768435
>She's coming to visit me
>and I'm nervous...
lol are you like 18? here's what you should do:
1. give her the Tauer (yes, another Tauer is good)
2. hug her when she says thanks
3. tell her she smells incredible
4. insert tongue into her butthole
5. ???
6. PROFIT!!!
>>
>>18768435
That tips the scales quite a bit to Divine Perversions favour imo. Plus Bianchi knows how to make a sexy frag, Tauer looks like he knows a lot about IT and scaring the hoes.

Food for thought.
>>
>>18768437
The Tauer is overall better for sure though. I just don't wanna be redundant. I'll just figure it out last minute before I leave. I can save the Bianchi when/if I go visit her after and I'm more comfortable with advancing the bases.
>>18768436
>lol are you like 18?
No, she's just very straight forward with her intentions and it's too early for me plus I'm a slow and romantic kinda dude, and she's literally telling me what she wants me to do to her and is asking me what underwear to wear. I don't want to be intimate with a woman I'm not in love with. At the same time I'm a guy after all and I'm fighting my urges, which is making me nervous.
>hug her when she says thanks
I'm actually gonna grab and kiss her hand and spin her around...
>tell her she smells incredible
Given. She's putting the Incense Rose for me.
>insert tongue into her butthole
See, this is a big issue. I'm not gonna tongue her butthole (yet), but I have a cunnilingus fetish and I just can't stop thinking about her gushing in my mouth and I just know I can make her...

I got a bottle of Gucci Guilty Absolute. First time I tried it it was a great woody leather. I usually have trouble with leather but this is unmistakeable. Trying it the second time it has a big synthetic smell a bit like acetone, not off-putting, it's alluring. It plays around with different notes but it's all a very masculine evening scent. You get cedar, smoky, leather. I get a bit of aromatic freshness that adds a peppery vibrancy. It's very airy in the middle and a dead ringer for Gucci PH1, clearly not the same fragrance between the top notes and the mid notes it has a brief interlude. Gucci PH1 is like an ancient wooden library, Absolute has the data disk version of it. There is patchouli in there, I know because I could smell the earthy patchouli on my shirt the next day. The patchouli also gives the fragrance a dark edge. I think the people who put Absolute on a pedestal are correct. It's a significant scent and you can see its influence in many things that came after like Purple Oud. It's brave, daring, and interesting. I could see it as a signature scent for someone whose life starts after sundown. The performance starts strong, everyone else smells it. It is a scent people will notice and like, it doesn't hide but it also doesn't scream, it purrs like an old engine. The bottle is very nice. The cap has a metal part on the outside. It sits very snug, I flung it twice taking it off. The detachable part of the cap is the top-most shape, not the whole black part. The font and logos are symmetrical on both side. The bottle feels and looks nice. I was surprised by the quality and how cool the bottle is. While it's an influential and good scent I wouldn't say it's a must have since there is so much competition in the masculine smoky segment. It kind of plays to the middle and just exists. What makes it easy to recommend is that while it is discontinued it's readily available and affordable. You can get 90ml for $70 any day of the week. That can't be beat.

>>
>>18768532
Black Friday ‘deals’ in general aren’t really deals anymore. 10-15+ years ago is was a little more genuine, but now shopping on Black Friday (and the assumed discount that goes with it) is such a given, retailers know they’re going to get sales regardless, so they don’t need to actually put up real discounts to incentivize.

>>18768526
Don’t respond to bait posts Anon. You should know better.
>>
>>18768555
Don't fret too much. At least you most likely got fresh bottles if you paid retail, I've often bought shit from discounters that's up to 10+ years old stock. Albeit they've still been fine, but it's possible to get a rare skunked bottle if it hadn't been stored properly and sat in a hot warehouse or so.

Sometimes you pay the fragrance toll, sometimes you come out ahead

I’m coming to the conclusion Missoni Wave is better (to my nose) than CAHSEE.
I originally bought Wave because they’re supposed to be similar and it was like… 1/3rd the cost? Haven’t looked at Chanel’s prices recently, but I enjoyed it so much I figured I’d get the real thing once I ran out.
Went back and retested CAHSEE and it’s just… not as good. The mint in Wave pops a little more, it’s a touch sweeter and creamier, CAHSEE comes off very salty to my nose, I presume Chanel’s New Caledonian sandalwood or w/e, they put it in so many of their men’s frags.

Anyway… thanks for reading my BlogPost.

Pineward, specifically
>dark, earthy and offputting frags.
I would like to emphasize that these are Pineward frags that -generally speaking- I’m not super fond of. Not all of his frags smell like they’re distilled from soil and roots, which (the soil and roots ones) I’m not a fan of. That said…
>Treacle
Smells of dry rotted wood and earthy bell pepper
>Akero
Supposedly there’s an apple note, I only got earthy green soil with plant matter. Ymmv
>Steading
Earthy that led into a hay note for me
>Coastal Veil
Broken stems and rich soil, a bit of something minty later on, probably the eucalyptus
>Fanghorn II
More woody than the previous ones in the list, but still a touch of soil.
>Acadian
Earthy green, broken stems, mint, chlorophyll.

Honestly - Get his Forest Collection, then read through the descriptions of anything else I listed and decide for yourself.

I have Cologne Bigarade that is clear but it smells great. The rest of my stuff has a color, even if slightly. The colored or opaque bottles are impossible to gauge. I have some striking rich amber colored fragrances.

Fun fact, the added coloring has an effect scent so it poses a challenge for the perfumer when it's "unnatural".
>>
>>18768507
I have dry fragrances that would choke you out. I use to avoid sweet fragrances but they are a nice palette cleanser after too many dry fragrances. A dry fragrance is also nice break after too many sweet fragrances. I go back and forth based on mood.

As always, good stuff Anon.
>>
>>18768709
I like that Meos fragrances range from pleasant, to vague and contemplative, to strange and unusual. Thoroughly enjoyed sampling the whole collection, but some are really more experimental. Like for e.g. Notturno, reminiscent of spilling oldschool black ink inside a wooden chest of parchment. Can't recommend it, except for novelty. Or if you really like huffing ink.

>>18768712
Coincidentally enough, my SOTD is actually Buio. It's centred around very dry and earthy patchouli, almost pungent in the opening. The frankincense is also present, but abstracted due to the punky woods and labdanum. As it dries down, the woody herbs, incense and leather give a really grounded naturalistic feeling. To compare, Last Season is sharper, raw leather, and dark green mossy/herbaceous. Buio is dusty, dry, resinous and earthy.

Also recommend
>L'Oblio
For anyone that likes Bois d'Argent
>Encore du Temps
If you like tea frags. Vaguely reminded me of The Cachemire by Dior, shares those same clean and fresh white florals.
