Layering is annoying, it's easier to put on a thicker jacket and not having to wear a midlayer when you're in and out of places. You don't win anything being a tough guy. I used to be wearing my work shorts (tradie) year around even in -10c, it's not too bad if you're only out for 10-15 min and it's warm inside, but it's much comfier to wear proper clothing when it's cold.
I strongly dislike jackets. I've only seen one jacket in real life that I didn't think was ugly and it was a moose knuckles parka.
