Legitimately gender expression. Certain notes evoke expectations of masculinity, femininity, both, or neither on a sliding 4 way scale. Certain combinations evoke varying degrees of masculinity of femininity or interaction with each other in socially contradicting ways that are validating to one’s on experience with gender and sexuality both growing up and their identity as a whole. An obvious one is Tobacco Vanille, spicy sweet. Most sweet fragrances are overly sweet gourmands chosen by vehemently hyper fem people (some twinks, trans women, femme lesbians, and overwhelmingly heterosexual women). Think of the Barbie black girl with cheetah, hot pink, and a push-up bra or tank with her tiddies hanging out. She’s probably super sweet and bubbly. She likely smells like Bianco Latte/Eclaire. Most tobacco fragrances long ago were aimed at older men and were rather raunchy. Associated with leather car seats, jackets, and cigars. You can see that top masc gays, laid back masc straight men, and butch women like Ombré Leather. Clean straightforward masc associations. The unique combination of this masc and sweet (tobacco and vanilla) could theoretically appeal to someone who likes the subversion of expectation, a top but not hyper masc gay who was made to feel feminine in his youth on being gay alone, the straight tomboy, the “chapstick lesbian.” This fragrence is almost universally loved and might not be the best example in terms of unique expression, some fragrances get VERY specific to times, places, moods, etc. tied to those perceptions of gender and they’re fucking magical.

Fragrances aren’t exclusively gay, but sometimes they evoke such a unique experience it might only be appreciated by someone who is. Generally these are ultra niche, hobby houses making shit that smells like specific mushrooms in a forest in Tibet.

IFRA doesn't have regulations because they are not a governmental body, they have guidelines, and when the ffern perfumer Elodie Durande, who is owned by Quintessence, plugs in the formula into their software it automatically complies with IFRA regulations. It's hard to talk about my fragrances when they are all vintage and most are discontinued so I end up speaking to myself. Who the hell I'm I going to talk to about Leather Oud, Cuir Cannage, Fleur de Liane, Egoist Concentree, etc.. in this shithole? You can only have a conversation with /frag/tards about stuff you find at Macys or Sephora. Last night I wore Tauer L'Oudh which is pretty interesting. The other day I also wore my Ted Lapidus Pour Homme (the leather one) which probably has real castoreum.

What are your most interesting fragrances?

Yes especially if you've already sprayed it at least once and introduced oxygen into the bottle.
Oxidation, evaporation, and heat and light exposure take their toll, albeit to a far lesser extent when stored properly in a cool, dark place.

I do know what you mean though, Anon. You’ve prob got a few much older than 30 years. I have an ~83 bottle of PRPH, and a different frag that’s either 50’s, or possibly 30’s.

>>18780969
You asked if they changed, fren, you didn’t ask if they spoil or go bad. Yes they change, they CAN go bad, but they can also remain relatively unchanged for 100+ years if they’re well stored and depending on their notes.

Went to a few local fragrance stores and Sephora yesterday with my pals to try something new(I'm >>18780630). Found the floral I was looking for that smells kinda like TF Soleil Neige but costs 90% less. A few interesting finds:
>Sauvage Extrait
They made the second best Sauvage better, now I'd rank them
>Eau Sauvage>Extrait>Elixir>>>>>the rest
I'm a little relieved that finally someone made a better alternative to Black Afgano than all those arabs who love oud and smoky profiles so much but could never really encapsulate the darkness of it properly. Very dense frag but has a classy BdC vibe to it still, lasts forever and projects like crazy.
>Terre D'Hermes Parfum
What an interesting frag, a closed scent profile that has some mystery to it(and if it's mysterious, it's oakmoss ofc). I still prefer the EDT but this appears to be more versatile for day and night.
>YSL L'Homme
The perfect masculine soapy scent. Blows LV Imagination out of the water, would wear this everyday in my house.

we also discuss about modern fragrances a majority of the time. Also why wouldn't we discuss vintage fragrances as well? For people who like fougeres the only way to smell a real fougere is to smell vintage perfumes or non ifra compliant perfumers works since it is a composition of lavender, coumarin, and oakmoss and ifra has banned oakmoss from perfumery.

dated is relative and simply means the fragrance smells like a has-been trend. one day, gourmands, ambroxan and amberwoods will all be considered "dated"

this thread is so autistic

sure, but I don't think trends are that linear anyway, sweet fragrances have been "in" since the 2000s and only seem to go through iterations of various popular accords (fruity ouds for example around 2024) but sweet scents in general will always smell pleasant to most people
that being said I wonder what the next trend will be

I am but I lurk more than post, if you are not part of the local hivemind you are wasting your time. One key takeaway from both here, fragrantica reviews or even reddit frag subs is
>don't take subjective opinions as facts
It was a costly lesson for me.

On that note, my subjective experience is, there aren't that many colognes out there that are good in price, good in performance and good in it's smell all at once. And even about that select few, my own opinion changed about it, in a small timeframe.

Yeah there's a lot of good stuff in the popular designer brands and they are commented here if you in between posts of Kouros, Fahrenheit and Yatagan, frags which I enjoy btw. They're not as interesting as the fougeres though, that's why I think the base Sauvage flankers are lame and Elixir/Extrait are good, they're interesting. But there's exceptions like Y EDP which is one of my favorite designer frags that I don't own. I also enjoy some JPGs though apparently we're not supposed to since the bottle with a male figure triggers the 4channer's closeted homosexual tendencies. What also happens is that some people think a few oldies make you smell like older people but they're wrong, the frags are timeless and they're limiting how they think of something because "oh old guys wear it" but it's all subjective so who cares. I know I don't.

>>
>>18781262
that's acceptable but you can't pretend these frags are timeless and mass-pleasing and attractive while at the same time acknowledging that they're just not that appealing nowadays to most
>>
>>18781264
no one claims that these frags are mass appealing in the current age. they're appealing to the user and for them that's what matters. you can wear stuff simply because you like it and not really care about what other people think about them.

you might then say that other people will think you smell bad because you're wearing something polarizing or that's not mass appealing, but i'd say that it has less to do with the scent itself vs how much is applied. for example, Sauvage is considered one of the most mass appealing perfumes out there, but you also commonly hear about how it's bothersome and unpleasant because people overspray it
>>
>>18781269
>no one claims that these frags are mass appealing in the current age
what I'm criticizing is specifically people who recommend these frags to newfags and to those who are explicitly searching for universally pleasant and modern fragrances. obviously you can enjoy whatever you want
>you also commonly hear about how it's bothersome and unpleasant because people overspray it
true
>>

>>
>>18781271
who cares about newfags. at least they are getting exposed to things they normally wouldn't see or try.
regardless the advice for newfags will always be the same: go to Sephora or a drugstore and sample stuff. recommending stuff to people new to the hobby will never really make sense to me because perfumes are a matter of personal preference and react to your own skin differently than others.
>>
>>18781273
I mean some people have weird tastes and it's a fact that the more exposure you get to fragrances as a hobby, the more you'll become open to more unconventional scent profiles and seek out weird stuff because the rest will start to seem generic to you
that's why you need to touch grass occasionally by sampling shit like spiritueuse double vanille, african leather, layton and whatnot to be reminded that smelling interesting and smelling good aren't the same thing
>>18781277
more likely is they'll try it, dislike it and default back to sephora anyway, but it just seems disingenuous to me when people see the phrase "attractive and mass-appealing" and respond with lapidus PH while criticizing recs that are obviously more relevant and likable

Off the bat it is not a mass appealing scent. It’s a potent jammy rose and strong leather scent that reminds me of gasoline.

Lads, this was very, very nice. Lasted about 8hrs on skin. I never tried either OG Jules. But this was mossy and oldschool smelling, without any pissy facets. Classy.
I also tried the rest of the mens Dioriginals and can say that they're all well done. Though if you already have Higher or Dune pour Homme, then skip those. They smell pretty true to the OG. Higher Energy was surprising because it's really quite different from the OG. It's less melon forward, and a lot more pineappley. It's sweeter and not in a bad way. I think I prefer the 2003 version, it's more futuristic smelling in a new millennium way. The Dioriginal version smells like a typical sweet, citrus/pineapple freshie.

I love Fahrenheit, but I can never bring myself to buy a full bottle of it because I absolutely hate the violet leaf "gasoline/leather jacket" opening.

I sold my bottle of Narciso Rodriguez' For Him because of it. (In For Him's case, the violet came off like the smell of wet concrete. Not as bad as gasoline but still not great.)

I can vouch for Collector’s Edition. Not only Intense and in Heaven are also good. Club de Nuit is very boring and synthetic in a way that’s headache inducing over time, and that’s AFTER the 20 minute lemon floor cleaner opening. It smells like so many other generic $20 masculine metallic+musk frags on drydown, that it doesn’t make sense to suffer that opening.

Hello /fa/, I have a question. I am a NEET that never does anything, nor do I ever buy anything. I just watch and read text on a screen in my cell.

(Tl; dr) Before even using fragrances, I want to make sure I smell as little as possible. I ordered antimicrobial shower cloths and a hairdryer to combat bacteria and moisture. I would like to replace my generic bodywash/shampoo with something natural and unscented that simply does the job. Do you recommend making this yourself? What ingredients do you use?

A bit of an aberration in that trend occurred today when a video (https://youtu.be/bjrg1NhJurU?si=UiBWBoby3GJuxlcS) came across my youtube recommendations and I had an intense desire to try and remove all possible scents and odors on my person. I want to smell like nothing. Perhaps, as a prerequisite to start experimenting with fragrances, but I can do that later. It seems that the fundamentals are in managing bacteria growth and moisture. If you can scrub the bacteria off (with special attention to skinfold areas such as behind the ears, the underarms, the groin, etc) in the shower, and if you can dry off perfectly after exiting the shower, then you can be certain that you have mitigated your personal body odor as much as possible. For all this time, I just lathered myself with my hands and a generic bodywash/shampoo, and I dried off haphazardly, so it follows that I have B.O.. I shopped around just now for a pair of antimicrobial shower cloths to really scrub the hell out of my body with.

I want to make my own natural surfactant to work with this new scrubbing cloth that I purchased. Apparently, there is little difference between generic soaps and bodywashes to dish soap, which kind of perturbs me. I know I could shop around for ingredients and follow someone's already established work online, but I bring this question to you because I trust that someone in this olfactory hobby has strong opinions that I could benefit from hearing.

The morning star is literally Christ (Rev 22:16), Isaiah 14:12 refers to satan's fall from grace rather than his current status. The star of dawn, the sunrise in the east and whatnot are symbols of Jesus

>>18781562
>How much of a cleansing do you need
Removing bacteria and then drying off as much as practically possible.
>just take a shower and get clean sheets/clothes
You can have "cleaned" clothes that still have Moraxella osloensis in them
>Talk about over-complicating simple hygiene.
Well you learn simple fundamentals, sure, bathe in a riverbank and use clay as shampoo, we can all understand that, but I want to refine my fundamentals over time. If I was friends with someone who was trying to troubleshoot a problem, which I knew of areas he could narrow in on to accomplish his goal, then I would thoroughly share with him the information that I think he could act upon.

>Have you tried the Parfum?
Yes. I like its opening. It has enough of the violet leaf so that it's still Fahrenheit, but it thickened it up too much in the drydown. The original was very airy. It was powerful, not forceful. The parfum is standard 2010s and onward "BeAsTmOdE!" bullshit.

I accept that Fahrenheit is a brilliant composition that just doesn't agree with me. It is what it is. Good for appreciation, not for wearing.
>>
>>18781586
Nuking means removing everything your body uses to protect you like the bacterial layer in your skin.
>>
>>18781497
The star in the east was a Biblical demon and the specific shape/symbolism used in Christmas imagery for that star is the star of Venus or Ishtar. She is also the morning star. Christians worship a lot of mesopotamian occultism.
>>
>>18781613
Well no I would not want to remove every last bacteria on my skin, but I would want to remove as much bacteria responsible for body odor as possible. So no I would not want to nuke my skin, just clean it very thoroughly.
>>
>>18781640
In the Christian context, the Morning Star, or the Latin word for it, "the light bringer," in reference to Satan, was from the comparison to the king of Babylon, where they mockingly referred to the ruler's presumed title (he called himself The Light Bringer). Babylon recurs many times in the Old Testament in what is now viewed in as a allegory for the excesses and vanity of worldliness, but it is understandably in opposition to God.

Its relation to Ishtar and witch covens is about as associated as its relation to Aphrodite, which is just as relevant to its association with the unpersonified, uncompromising, masculine 'force' tied to military action as described in the Mawangdui Silk Texts and the Shiji. I'm sure the Australian Aboriginals and the Mezoamericans had their own ideas. Human reason will find association with astrological phenomena.

It turns out, Venus is just a planet, and it's one that would be particularly identifiable in the night sky especially to ancient people familiar with looking up at the cosmos, and it ended up being the herald of Christ's birth. We get it wrong commonly when we refer to it as the north star (due to the north star's role in navigation), but the wisemen actually followed the Morning Star.

I would not take it so far to say that Christians, or those wisemen, were worshiping the planet Venus itself or any foreign deity that it would have represented to them. I think, just for your own reference, you would find it interesting to know that Christians worship the Christian God, which to them is eternal, all-powerful, and all-benevolent. If they worshiped anything else, they wouldn't really be Christians.

So is your Bible considering it refers to both Christ AND his enemy Lucifer as the same thing, and the Morning Star that predates them, who was universally worshiped as one of the central most powerful gods was Ishtar. She became Asheera, consort of El, then erased entirely. El that became the Biblical God is also interchangeable with Bal, also equated to Satan/Lucifer at some points. There’s no consistency to the Christian belief system, it borrows on earlier mythology from the same region.

After rain night, sprayed Guerlain AA Rose Amira.
I like it, but feel it produces a somewhat similar feeling to Patchouli Ardent. Too camphorous.
I like that in patchouli ardent, think its weird in rose amira. Are all the Absolu Allegoria like this?
A rose heavy recommendations for autumn nights?

good but imo it's quite different (the parfum is closed to NYI or BdP)

Did I do the right thing blind buying Jicky EdP (2021) for around $75? I heard it's already been discontinued and considering the fact that it's supposedly a staple in perfumery, I decided why not pull the trigger on it.

>>18781934
It's never getting discontinued, you got tricked by fomo.

it's a flat version of Ambre Nuit. They lifted the construction and almost the bottle. Ambre Nuit itself is not particularly good or interesting. It's a clean rose amber with a vague green apple opening. it's 'fine' for old women and shit for middle eastern men and the children who buy these fucking knockoff frags.

>>18781168
absolutely, but you have to be a little more specific because there's a million ways to go in terms of primary smell and price point.

1) Bosca Vanilla Forte is a Guerlain frag that you can pick up on discounters for about 100. I claim it's unisex, but the top is a bit fem. It's an excellent woody vanilla that pops at the top with fresh vanilla mandarin and comes down to a warm woody vanilla. Really pleasant and inviting and lively/youthful but has a good woody base to it so I think anyone can wear this. Plus, I think it's based on the best vanilla frag of all time (Spiriteuse Dbl Vanille) so it's built the same way.

2) Fico di Amalfi - Slightly sweetened figs and citruses up top and very clean. If LV shit this out a year ago every influencer on tik tok would be glazing the fuck out of it, but because it came out a while ago there's nothing to sell. This frag is easily better than 85% of the LV line.

3) Cremo Vintage Suede - It's like someone combined Tom Ford's Ombre Leather and Tuscan Leather. It's smooth suede with a pop of raspberry at the very top and soft florals in the body. It turns into "cream of leather" like 30 minutes in. Really nice interesting smell and it's like 25$ on amazon.

4) Polo Red EdT - I mention this a much as possible. The first Red was the best because it was the only one that leaned into both cranberry AND coffee. Amazing frag that no one gives a fuck about composed by the head at Tom Ford when that house was making nonstop hits.
>>
>>18781976
>the best vanilla frag of all time (Spiriteuse Dbl Vanille)
I see this hyped a lot but it's too expensive
Is it the same kind of non-sweet, realistic bourbon vanilla as in Babycat?
>>
>>18781981
no absolutely not. I dislike Babycat. I think it's a cloying sweet frag made for modern women. The 'vibe' of Dbl Vanille is much closer to Tuxedo, but Dbl Vanille is made a decade before with a noticeably different set of backing notes. I just sprayed Dbl vanille and Tuxedo Patchouli on my arm and it's Dbl: Warm spices and wood next to a burning fire; noticeably warm and immediately vanilla woody. Tuxedo: immediately vanilla + vegetal patchouli and rum; darker and greener and fresher. Neither is similar to the leather sweetness of Babycat. I would highly recommend at least getting a decant because you'll use that decant up immediately. You can wear Dbl Vanille basically anywhere (even the gym if you don't give a fuck)
>>
>>18781986
Thanks anon
>You can wear Dbl Vanille basically anywhere
Doesn't it get cloying in the summer?
>>
>>18781987
Any fragrance can be cloying at any point anywhere.
>Summer
that's the season when most people are inside with some kind of air conditioning. If you're in Europe just spray a little less. I like it in summer; the heat helps the spice notes pop more. I would be more nervous in the Winter when everyone is inside with all the windows closed and the heating turned on. Spray less at THAT point so you don't bother people.
>>
>>18781965
>flat version of ambre nuit
>way different notes
>bottle closer to ysl private line
>>
>>18781987
Not really. It's a dry, boozy vanilla, not a sticky sweet vanilla.
>>
>>18781168

you're paying $100 for a single ingredient. Not that's not an exaggeration. The genius of this line is that they sell 30 cents of fragrance to saps who don't know any better.

Here's the exact same shit, from a supply house:
perfumersupplyhouse replace this part with DOT COM and then after that put /product/iso-e-super-iff/ and I have to write all this shit out so the spam filter doesn't flag it

it's really that straightforward. A couple of marketing geniuses made a fortune off of the popularity of one chemical.

Iso E super + ambroxide (it will be called the specific patented name of whatever firm is making the fragrance: ambrofix, ambroxan, Ambrox) are the autotune of modern perfumery. I can almost guarantee that whatever fragrance you're thinking of, it's number one ingredient will be denatured alcohol, number 2 will be iso e super and number 3 will be ambroxide. you're doing the equivalent of 'layering' sugar into orange juice. If you want to boost longevity spray some more onto your clothes in addition to your skin. The cloth with hold and wick the fragrance for longer.
