No, they’re extremely basic and uninteresting. I would strongly recommend you look at work jackets. They often have some real character and style to them.

Fuck that. Synthetic shells are good if you’re getting rained on or snowed on for extended periods of time but they don’t age or build character as you wear them. I would get like pic related. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to be very warm and be a piece of outerwear that looks better as it gets older. Half the secret to good looking outerwear is them gaining that patina as they age.

NTA but I live in a rainy area so I'm pretty much forced to wear something waterproof during fall and spring
Do I have any options aside from shells? Leather maybe?

You could look into waxed jackets which are going to be as close to waterproof as you can get without resorting to a synthetic shell. The Flint and Tinder Waxed Trucker Jacket is a really well known and popular one and you can get it with a wool lining for a bit of extra money. Not cheap though, I think it runs close to $400 but is most definitely a BIFL piece that will only get better looking every year you own it. I’m actually very much considering buying one for myself right now. Leather is a possibility if properly treated to shed water but I warn you they are incredibly heavy jackets. I have a. Ice one I use while riding my motorcycle and it weighs like five fucking pounds. It’s not something I would really want to wear around town unless I had no other option. I would say that every guy should probably own a leather jacket though. They do last a lifetime and get prettier as they age. Just not my first choice as a daily wear jacket.
