When did you grew out of free weights?

I quit them a year ago when I turned 38 and mostly used my cable machine from then on, because I was tired of constant pain and smaller injuries. It was more fun, super easy on my joints, low fatigue and very effective. I recently started adding at least some free weight exercises again, as I lost a lot of strength.
