Count calories, all of them.
Eat about 500-1000 less calories than your TDEE.
Buy scales, be accurate.
Learn to cook. Try to stick to lean protein and green vegetables.
Eat a lot of protein. 0.72g per pound of goal lean body mass.
Doing cardio, even just walking, will improve your health. There is no such thing as a healthy fat heart, but you can offset the risks.
Lifting weights will keep and gain muscle mass and lose fat much quicker. No lifting results in the body eating away muscle AND fat.
Drink more water.

Eat refined sugars, they're terrible for you regardless of calories.
Eat processed foods.
Drink your calories (alcohol, soda, Starbucks).
Freak out over a weight loss stall. Plateaus can last up to three weeks.
"Reward" yourself. Cheat days cheat only yourself.

maybe a dumb question but how are you supposed to count calories for oil used in cooking? like if i were to measure out the olive oil i put in the pan to fry a chicken breast in, a fair amount of that will be left behind in the pan rather than consumed by me. does everyone just log the full amount and accept that it's an overestimate or is there a more clever way to do this?

i try to err high if i know i can't be very accurate, but i'd rather just be accurate if possible. i'm on about as big of a deficit as i can tolerate without feeling terrible, so i'm somewhat more concerned about eating too few calories than slightly too many at the moment
