If you want the most muscle possible you increase the calories until you see no extra gains, assuming calories are the only variable. You will never get past 60% of your potential with +500, your metabolism is just going to yoyo and the scale is just reading how much water you gained. If you don't see a stark difference in lean/dirty bulking right like an open weight powerlifter then you are doing something very wrong, however if you are an expert at this then you can get 80% of the gains without gaining much if any fat if you cut during deloads and aren't doing something as stupid as +300 on lifting days and +1000 on rest days.

There is no point trying to be a mass monster. Reach a BMI of 22-24 and get as lean as possible
