Had to city hop from London to Boston to NYC for work the past month. I live in a neighboring city to the largest metro area in my state (southern US, so almost no walkability whatsoever even in the city). There are some things to note:>proximity to the city mattersThe area outside the city is highly affluent so you see a good combination of wealthy people getting work done and paying retarded gym prices (orange theory, Lifetime, crossshit, pilates). Like even 15 minutes outside of the city you get a lot of the gym bros and plastic-enhanced cardio bunnies everywhere.>food cultureLiving in exurbia, you have more home space to store a lot more food, so you can easily lose track of portion control. Living in a bugman cube in a concrete city limits sizes for your kitchen and cold storage by default so you likely can't justify a costco beef run without an immediate plan to use it like a large dinner party or pot luck or something.>fashion culturePeople in the south have shit style for the most part. The weather patterns makes it pretty hard since most fashion is designed for places like NYC and Europe that have relatively mild and consistent weather. You'd sweat your balls off in November if you tried to ape urban fall styles in the south. But practically this means you're not trying to fit your body into the socially acceptable clothing for those urban areas, so you get enough nicer things to get buy (e.g., suits, business casual clothes, etc.) and live in t-shirts and shorts most of the casual time. And since you're not walking everywhere, you can pull off wearing nicer but less comfortable shoes, but it reinforces not walking regularly. >social strataI assume people move to or remain in cities they were raised because they care about the social structures there, particularly around appearance and manners. Meanwhile, exurbia tends to be more "you stay in your lane, I'll stay in mine". That type of social pressure will impact whatever gym culture is present
