straps or no straps for deadlifts? whats your take? I personally use them since in theory your grip will fail before your posterior chain which is the entire point of the deadlift
>>
>>77355549
Strongman allows straps but no sumo, and they are right.
>>
>>77355549
Depends on your training goals. When I was grappling I didn't use them because I had beastly grip strength and was training for more beastly grip strength. Now that I'm old and out of shape I use them sometimes.
>>
>>77355549
95% of /fit/ are dyel fatties so they should not use straps so they actually build up their grip strength

not that /fit/ will ever actually deadlift anyway
>>
>>77355579
i squat 115kg and deadlift 120kg and i was going to start using straps soon since i feel like im leaving a lot of gains on the table if my grip keeps bottlenecking my deadlift
isnt deadlift supposed to be considerably to squat?
i feel kind of uneasy sqautting weight which i dont even know if i could deadlift
>>
>>77355584
you are probably either not hitting depth at squat or deadlifting too light. I squat 105 kilos for 6 reps and deadlift 125 kilos for 4 reps with straps. I do my grip work elsewhere so I believe it evens out?
>>
>>77355584
>deadlift 120kg
>my grip keeps bottlenecking my deadlift
In your position I would deadlift without straps until my grip failed and then use straps for the next set/to finish that set. You should also consider supplemental grip work because 120kg shouldn't be straps-required territory unless you have cartoonishly small hands or some other deformity or disorder.
>>
There are four ways to hold a bar in a deadlift:
Double overhand, mixed, straps, hook grip. What sport you're competing in decides what you use. If you're just in the gym and not taking for competition it doesn't fucking matter at all. Training the DL for grip strength is retarded and no one who is taking things seriously does that. I started using straps once the bar slips out of my hands but have moved to mix grip as I prefer to brace standing up.
>>
>>77355584
deadlift should be like a 40kg more than squat or more
but at the same time I wouldnt bother with straps until you can do 2x bodyweight at least

>ONLY GRIP YOU SHOULD USE IS DOUBLE OVERHAND
ftfy
Why would you take away one of the selling points of deadlifting? Your weak ass hands shouldn't be bottle necking your strong ass back. Make that grip stronger, quit being a pussy.
>>
>>77355600
can't you just train your grip elsewhere? I do carries and hangs
>>
use straps if you need to, you're not in a powerlifting competition. you still build grip strength with them increasing the weight.
>>
>>77355600
if you're serious about deadlifting then you want a deadlift as most as you possibly can and you cannot do that relying on your grip. Just simply anatomically, the forearms muscles for your grip are too snall to confidently hold 600+lbs. It's an idiotic thing to say.
>>
>>77355549
use them only when you need to. use no loops or one loop when you need extra assistance, only use two or more loops if you're hand is injured

I only use them if going close to 1 RM. how's my form bros?
>>
i deadlift 140kg now with no straps or belt or anything, couldn't do 130 for ages and now here we are
>>
>>77355595
t. dyel
dl is great for grip stength. How else would you grip over 100kg
You are just weak
>>
>>77355549
Just use them for your heaviest working weight set. They let you focus more on your form execute the lift with greater confidence and safety.
>>
I just use chalk.
>>
>>77355595
Double overhand is the safest way in terms of minimising injury risk, so you shouldn’t use other methods unless you’re a powerlifter
>>
>>77355549
Don't use them you need good grip
>>
I used to hook grip my deadlifts but I need to save my hands for cleans and snatches now so I strap when my warmup hits 3+ plates
>>
i tried hook grip once and it fucked up the ligaments in my arms so bad i never did it again
>>
I go double overhand up until 180kg then swap to mixed till my grip fails me and then usually put straps on at around 230kg. Straps give me like 2 more reps also.

>in (((2026)))
NGMI, orthopedic surgeons love this one simple trick.
>>
>>77356283
deadlifting is one of the safest lifts you can do, i have no idea how people even hurt themselves doing it
>>
>he fell for the hook grip meme
>>
>>77356289
putting hundreds of pounds of load on your spine is considered a "safe" lift by barbell fatties
>>
>>77356283
Do this lift wrong ONE time and you'll have back problems FOREVER!
>>
>>77356411
>>77356415
holy shit actual dyel
>>
>>77355618
I deadlift 600+ with no straps. Literally dont use straps and build your forearms up. Are all of you walking around with tiny forearms and huge biceps? Doesn't that shit look weird?
>>
>>77356051
7/10 on form but you lifted it (that's all that REALLY matters)
>>
this thread convinced me that im a wristlet and should stop using straps on conventionals
>>
>>77355549
I used to use just chalk but my current lame gym does not allow it so I use straps on the heavy stuff. I would prefer to use chalk if I could.
>>
>>77356451
its super easy to train grip you just do dead hangs and hold at the top of deads.

I have a ridiculously strong grip now, i almost crushed a guys hand during a hand shake recently even though i didnt mean to (he probably thinks im an asshole)
>>
>>77355600
>our weak ass hands shouldn't be bottle necking your strong ass back.
actually they should, that is about as acceptable an example of a bottleneck as i can think of. some muscle groups are stronger than others and your forearms should fail before your entire fucking posterior chain does. also, as the guy you're responding to pointed out, if you want to train grip strength there's more direct and effective ways of doing that than DLs
>>
>>77356517
nta but not really, at what point do you have the opportunity to a hold as much weight as a deadlift
>>
>>77355549
If I'm doing higher reps I go straps, I've done my max without straps (550 lbs). But last week I did 10x10 @ 225 and used straps the whole time.
>>
>>77355549
>straps or no straps for deadlifts?
How about "no deadlifts"
Useless exercise for morons who think they're strong while doing half reps on literally every other exercise
>>
>>77356522
pretty much never bro, but if anything that supports my point so idk what you mean by not really
>>
>>77356527
how is picking up heavy stuff useless?
>>
>>77356527
t. spinelet
>>
>>77355549
No straps until your grip gives out. Straps after.
>>
>>77355600
t. dyel
Come back when you get your deadlift to 500+, kid.
>>
>>77356424
Lol okay. Post yourself deadlifting 600 with double overhand and no straps.
>>
>>77356527
it is one of the best exercises for bodybuilding. The main mistake people make is thinking you have to overdo it. Unlike other bodybuilding exercises you dont need to do high volume

i do deads as my warm up for my entire back day.
>>
>>77356529
the only way to improve your grip strength is to hold onto heavier weights and deads is the only safe way to do that
>>
imo straps not necessary because of mixed grip. if you insist on double overs and cant hold the weight then hit the dead hangs and strap up
