You don't put clips on unless you're doing your one rep max and need the absolute minimal weight movement or the weights are really close the edge of the bar and might fall off.
You're suppose to NOT put clips on 99% of the time so if you need to bail out of a failed rep you can tilt the bar to the side and slide the weights off.
It's not safe to have clips on.

A slit tilt to the side is less compromising then throwing the weights backwards.
When you're squatting you are leaning forward so in order to drop the weight backwards you have to go from a leaning forward position to a leaning backwards position.
You have to bend your spin backwards while under heavy load which is very bad than compared to slightly tilting the bar down off to the side.
The weights are heavy enough to slid off with a small tilt.
Granted this advice was more useful way back when people would have to lift the bar off the ground to get to a squat position.
Nowadays its best to just squat in a power rack and have the safety bars catch the bar.

There are ways to get out of a failed squat while pushing it backwards but it takes some training.
Its arguably better than the tilt but it needs to be trained.

maybe you can get away with that if your plates are snug on on the bar like Oly bumpers or calibrated powerlifting plates and you're also squatting less than like 3pl8. The side to side walkout motion will shift cheeaper playes with wider holes very easily and sufficiently heavy weight on the bar will bend it enough that the plates slide off from just gravity.

Yeah at that point I would not be doing the tilting thing.
But if you're at the point where the bar would be bending you should never be squatting without safety bars/ spotters in the first place because you are advanced enough to know better and should be training on real equipment with safety bars.

Few dyels and old farts used to give me shitty looks when i pendlay rowed in the previous gym i trained at but never said anything, i stared them right in their eyes until they looked away few times for fun. I did my pendlays in the weightlifting section meant for banging and clanging brother anyway so fuck them.

I suffer calisthenics just so I don't have to endure public gyms anymore nor do I have to pay to use someone's garage gym equipment (private gym experience).
