Calisthenics dyels try to keep you from getting stronger out of jealousy, so they tell you to wait until some really high number long past the point where it develops strength. They do this because they're still stuck on push-ups and glute bridges, so they get mad seeing people improve.

Pick a rep range you like and add weight to progress. Is probably the ceiling before it becomes more endurance-based, so add weight. There isn't even any reasoning behind why you can't do low rep sets with calisthenics if you want to. Low rep sets will be better at developing strength.

They also aren't aware that high rep Calisthenics will destroy your joints and tendons. Worse then lifting weights ever will.

It's why Crossfit failed.

That said Calisthenics are a wonderful and important part of a vibrant strength and athletic program that targets hard to reach muscles and and act like the nails to the board of your house.

Do it. I have started adding weight when I hit 6-7 reps with my chin-ups and dips. If you can do 5 reps with good form and ROM, then add weight. Waiting for a high rep range is retarded if your form is GOOD. Even if you want to achieve higher numbers or are working towards another skill (ring muscle-ups, etc.), adding weight is the best and smartest decision.

You either add a small amount of weight to preserve the 12 reps, or add a moderate amount of weight and go down to 8 (give or take) and work back up to 12. Have you ever worked out in your life?

Yes? I got to 3x10 dips then added 10 pounds and could still do 3x10 dips. Progressive overload. Add a small weight every workout. Add another 5-10 pounds every workout. If you need to do less reps then do less reps and stay at the same weight as you work back up to 10 reps. The exact number of reps you use as your baseline doesn't really matter but be around 6-14.

Now if you have a specific reason for needing higher endurance then yeah makes sense. But at a certain points high rep Calisthenics is the end goal of high rep Calisthenics. You are just grinding your joints and cartilage to dust.
