If you’re out of the loop, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act (with over 300 votes), making DST permanent. It now goes to the Senate.

Most sources are saying it has a 50% chance of passing, but its passage through the House shocked everyone.

This will have serious, wide-spread health effects on most of the country. A lot of medical associations are opposed to it.

Morning sunlight is a necessary component of normal human physiology. Most people get it on their drive to work, or during the first unproductive part of their day. It both suppresses and triggers melatonin production.

When you awaken, melatonin is extremely high. Sunlight actually triggers the pineal gland to stop production of melatonin, which breaks down after 30-60 minutes. Cells in the retina trigger the SNC (the brains internal clock) to reset.

So there’s no getting around this; all humans need morning sunlight to reset their rest and recovery cycle. A huge chunk of the U.S. won’t see sunrise until 9am in winter.

First of all, it should be permanent normal time, not permanent Daylight Savings Time. DST makes it so that 1 o'clock is midday and midnight. 12 is supposed to be midday and midnight.

That problem isn't going to be fixed by fucking with clocks. The problem is the 9-5 work schedule that doesn't change with the seasons and frankly isn't necessary for most jobs.

I don't give much of a fuck how early it starts getting dark in the afternoon/evening, but I fucking HATE having to wake up before dawn. Needing to get out of bed when it is still dark outside is absolute cancer.
