I think diet has become the default. Everyone I know refers to it as full calorie/full sugar soda and "soda" (diet)

It annoys my husband that I call (zero/diet) “soda” when I ask him to buy some. He now clarifies, “You mean diet, right?” before he buys some. I call it “sugar soda” when referring to the crap he buys. I think it’s disgusting. It has a syrupy texture and sour aftertaste.
