What are the benefits/drawbacks of doing a 72 hour fast?

12 hours in, been years since my last one.
>>
Americans are disgusting.
Look that disgusting sauce on the pizza.
And what's the reason every retarded fat that doesn't know anything about diet or how to lose weight always love this fasting meme? Only women and fat Americans do this shit.
TLDR kys imbecile

they don't know how to eat properly and think fasting is hardcore and virtuous as if they're doing some Buddhist ritual

Sweden does this too.
It is impossible to eat the pizza after 30 minutes or even cold later when all that fucking sauce is fucking up the dough.

This image is famous on finnish imageboards, the sauce is mayonase. Suprisingly good by the way and in some regions you have to ask your pizza without mayonase because the kebab-pizzerias put them by default.

you will lose some weight

you will be hungry
you will probably gain the weight back
you might lose muscle instead of fat

In general, on this board anyway, fasting is just a way for people to maintain their body weight while binge eating. Periodic fasting can be very healthy, but it's not healthy the way that it's normally practiced here.

fasting is retarded, you shouldn't have to fast ever unless you literally have a shittier diet and if that's the case you should just kys
>>
>>77437928
Fasting is based. It releases stem cells and lengthens telomeres. Everyone should fast routinely.

Also fasting should be combined with a whole food low-carb diet.

So nobody has any personal experiences?
I'm not doing this to lose weight, just interested to see how I'll feel after a 72-hr one.

Currently feel a little like I wanna to chew on something and my stomach feels empty, can still do a muscle-up and feel no dizziness or weird "feels".
>>
>>77438247
If you're fat it won't do you much harm. If you're already very lean then be careful. I certainly would never deliberately do a 72h fast more than a couple times per year.
Doing prolonged fasts every other week led to strength loss for me, but at that time they were ~36 hour fasts.

>see how I'll feel after a 72-hr one.
How you feel is largely irrelevant. Anyway, the fasting will increase your emotional lability and make you go from euphoric to enraged very easily.

72 hrs is tough. Make sure you don't have to do anything physical in those days because it can get dangerous. Drink 3-4 liters of water a day + sugar-free electrolites. When I did it I smoked weed and it really helped be curb the hunger and sleep more, but it's not ideal. After like 30-35 hours of fasting you will feel overly energized but don't trust that feeling don't work out

>Inb4 american, fat

I'm italian and I did it for spiritual purposes, HIIT and incline walks are best for fat loss

>I'm not doing this to lose weight, just interested to see how I'll feel after a 72-hr one.
I'll bite. I fast regularly.
I find fasting increments sorta mirrored working out muscles, starting off small and going bigger in increments worked well for me. I could barely skip a meal, but after a while of doing it, it was second nature to not eat a meal. Then OMAD, then 48 hours, then rolling 72.
My biggest different is between 48-72, randomly the chance of lightheadedness/fainting sneaks up on you, and you won't know you are susceptible until it happens. An hour earlier you'll be able to do pullups no problem, then the next hour you stand up too fast and have to sit back down. Just watch out for that.
Also, I went through a couple up and downs of no energy -> high energy -> no energy, but then I settled into a high-energy state, feels kinda weird but otherwise fine.
Anyways, similar to 48 hours, once you do enough 72 hour fasts, a lot of these problems diminish.

I've definitely seen others have this happen to them; personally wasn't an issue for me, so this is a person-by-person basis OP

A lot of the benefits of long term fasting start to taper off around 36 hours. If you’re planning to fast for fat loss 36-48 hrs seems pretty much optimal. Studies have shown over and over again too that introducing just one 36-48 hr fast per week results in more fat loss and better muscle retention than daily calorie restriction. And that’s true even if they basically eat whatever they want when they’re not fasting, but the results are obviously better with high protein whole food diets.

anything beyond a 72h fast is diminishing returns
>>
>>77439207
Diminishing returns start at 24-48 hours actually. If you want to fast as like a spiritual exercise or just to get it over with in one go, then go for as long as you want but if your goal is multiple longer term fasts for fat loss then 24-36 hrs is pretty much the sweet spot.
>>
>>77439219
So 24 is good?
>>
>>77439219
Good to know, I believe after 72h you begin losing muscle?
>>
>>77439221
Well yes and no. It’s a complicated relationship. Basically aggregate “benefits” start to diminish at 24 hrs and yet all the mechanisms you actually want are really just peaking at 24 hours. So you should go longer. 36 is pretty much optimal. >36 hours will actually burn more fat but you’ll spike cortisol long story short you’ll probably binge harder when you finish and it will be tough to repeat. For these reasons 48 hours should probably kinda be your max if you’re just looking to lose weight. So 1. 36 hours 2. 48 hours 3. 24 hours.

>>77439254
It’s highly individual and depends on your particular stress response, all kinds of stuff going on in your body before and during the fast but pretty much everyone sees a heightened stress response after 24 hrs. The question is if you’re still gaining enough to justify what you’re losing. For most people, that ratio is good enough between 24 and 48 hrs. Over 48 hours a lot of people are running into problems. You can still lose fat but what you see in the data is that these issues start to rear their head in most people. I don’t think people should fast beyond 48 hours for fat loss in general. If you want to get more specific for you, you can use a blood ketone monitor as a rough tracker. Once you’re solidly in ketosis, you’re in the sweet spot. That sweet spot ends somewhere you are really struggling to relax, sleep, feel hunger, these sort of things. So typically what you find is you’ll start to feel better around hour 30 and by hour 50 feel like shit again. Those are signs your window came and went.
>>
Another tip is to really push your activity level on the day between 24 hours and whenever you break your fast. That’s when you’ll be optimizing fat burn so that’s when you should push it.
>>
>>77439272
>struggling to relax, sleep, feel hunger, these sort of things
I always find it's hard to sleep on day 2, so after 48+hr
>>
>>77438671
You're a retard. Fasting cures disordered eating
>>
To summarize for sciencelets, your body basically taps into fat reserves somewhere around 24 hours fasted, but after that happens your body starts to spike hormones like insulin to spike blood sugar and cling to fat to prepare for a long period of starvation. So if you just keep fasting, eventually thermodynamics will do their job and you’ll lose whatever fat you have, but it will be hell and muscle wasting is observed. For people that don’t want to torture themselves or lose muscle but want to fast to lose fat, they can optimize by fasting for somewhere between 24 and 48 hrs to maximize fat burn while minimizing stress response, rinse and repeat about once per week. This method has been demonstrated in multiple clinical studies to burn fat faster than caloric restriction, keto, and longer fasts over the long term. You can keep track of your fat burn and stress response by using blood ketone and sugar monitors. If you’re fasting, you’re not burning fat until your monitor shows you’re in ketosis. If you’re fasting and your blood sugar spikes, it means you’ve exited that window where your body isn’t trying to cling to fat.
>>
>>77439283
That’s pretty typical. Personally I have a hard time sleeping without food at all. That’s why I use the monitors. For me, I am in ketosis somewhere around 30 hours and my stress hormones and blood sugar starts to spike just after 48 hours, sometimes before. This is more or less what you see across populations. The optimal for most people seems to be somewhere around 36 hrs, and a single 36 hr fast once per week has profound fat loss effects basically in every study it’s ever tried.

Dry fasting. Look it up. Actually much easier than water fasting.

Dry fasting>snake juice fasting>plain water fasting>>>>>>sugar free drink fasting
>>
I did it once a year ago. The best benefit was mental. More in control of my emotions I am. I know my weakness, and with it I can survive. That skill spans across all of life.

Weight loss is minimal.

40 something hours now, feels much better than yesterday. Not much hunger or irritation or anything like that.

>these interpretations are based on the assumption that during fasting episodes participants consume fewer calories than people not engaging in fasting, which has not been confirmed with objective data.
