Just ONE extremely heavy set that makes you shit blood and pass out. Then take 6 to 7 months off.

He was right about everything
>>
When I'm doing big compounds for strength I just work up to a top set, balls to the wall of 5-3 reps. Then a couple of back off sets

I just can't look forward to 5 sets of 5 of being slightly near but the necessary amount away from peak intensity. Just an unsatisfactory and boring way to train.
>>
>>77440625
I genuinely don't understand how people training compounds in 5x5. Even 3 sets is pushing it for me.
>>
>>77440636
5x5 It is just for beginners.
You will hit your Max and you still need to get stronger.

The faggot that is able to do 5x5 is not lifting heavy
>>
>>77440636
I do 4x4 on deadlifts
4x4 on C&J
4x6 on squats

by the fourth set im wishing for it to fucking end. all other compounds are 2x8 or failure since I do them after these movements on my full body split. Cant imagine doing 5x5
>>

I did this for 4-5 months as a newbie. It works up until you get to like 2pl8 squats and then it is just flat out not enough time for recovery. I started piling up minor injuries and took a week off to recover then re-evaluated my approach. I decided to take inspiration from Mentzer, 1 big set and a bunch of warmup sets and drop sets. I progressed rapidly to 3pl8 in a month and all those random mysterious kinks in my back, hips and knees went away.

*did 5x5 heavy squats, 3 times a week.

Thanks SL5x5 for this shitty program, but at least it conditioned me to enjoy brutal fucking workouts.

Cope.

i fell for the Starting Strength meme and burned out so quickly doing SQUATS EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME

now i do twice weekly full body and it's way more sustainable and i can also get in dedicated cardio twice a week without impacting recovery

believe it or not Leonidas has been the most useful natty youtuber with good advice

It is just literally not possible for a natty. I didn't even get burnt out, I was fully willing to do 5x5 of my 5 rep max squats 3 times a week for SL5x5, and I was grinding out my sets 3 times a week but it got to the point where every other workout I was getting an injury and I was spending more time recovering than squatting.
>>
>>77441521
This is when you're supposed to shift to imtermediate training styles. The issue is, unless you're coached, most people do what you did and get hurt.
>>
>>77441521
Oh, and I was also doing 5xfailure of pull-ups and that shit gave me tendonitis after a few months.

5 sets to failure, 3 times a week, of ANYTHING is injury inducing.
>>
>>77441525
are weighted pullups/chinups just injury waiting to happen? it's part of my current programming, i'm at +15lbs 3x8 rn and progressing
>>
>>77441523
I figured that "intermediate" meant 1/2/3/4, so 4 months in at 1/1.5/2/3 I was still a beginner. But yeah, eventually I realized that I was injuring myself and dialed it back. And I completely ramped up my progress when I did.
>>
>>77441533
I dialed back to 3 sets, twice a week (previously I was 5 sets, 3 times a week) and my tendonitis (tennis elbow) is going down slowly.
>>
>>77441534
At least you had the brains to figure it out quickly, some people never do. 5x5's are awesome but they have a few months expiration date before they become too. much. I fucked myself up with one years ago too.
>>
if i go lower RPE just for general fitness is 5x5 ok?
>>
Just do one set that crushes your bones and breaks your neck and rest forever
>>
>>77441541
Yeah, it is really annoying how all you hear as a newbie is "train hard, pile on weight, feel the burn" and you do exactly that, train gradually but with max effort, put on 2.5lb plates at a time, and then after a certain point it's just: injury, injury, injury. Then you go for advice online and they tell you you're ego-lifting.

>>77441542
The thing is that you will need to put on additional weight to progress. And at high volume it becomes hard to tell just where the line is. Your first set is doable, 4th set is hard, 5th is brutally grinding. Drop weight? You will be at the same weight for weeks and it will never feel easier. And often with injuries, they don't happen when you work out. They appear after. You finish all 5 sets. Tired, but no pain. But why does it hurt your knees to sit on the toilet now? Next workout you feel fine, go to do a warmup set. Suddenly you feel a pull in your leg. Thank God you did a warm-up and didn't jump into your main set or you'd be killed by the barbell.
>>
>>77441554
thx, i'll just stick to my 3x5 amateur progression sets, often doing 1x5 with 2x5 drop sets, recovery seems good and no serious injuries so far
