Do you think any of Durianriders advice on fitness holds weight?

He seems pretty lean

He’s right about electronic shifting and disc brakes on road bikes, so I’m sure his other ideas are valid.

He's a vegan so you won't get any good faith responses, except mine. I'm also not going to sit here and argue about him to a bunch of retards anyway.

If you've read any sports and conditioning literature, you'd discover that the recommended amount of carbs per day is dramatically increased for athletes, endurance athletes especially. This is because they are frequently depleting their muscle and liver glycogen stores and they need to rapidly reuptake to maintain their training routine. The recommended amount for endurance athletes in training is 8-10g/kg per day. Let's take a 70kg person (average "lean" weight), that'll be 700g or 2,800 kcal a day purely from carbs.

Durianrider rides all day, every day. He is open about this and his "success story" clients all take up the same lifestyle. Thus, their calories start to move towards that 10g per kg a day window. This 10g/kg target is NOT CARBOHYDRATE LOADING. Loading is even higher, this is a target for "normal" training not pre-contest prep. Most of his rhetoric about "infinite carbs" is aimed at anemic vegans following people like McGregor who severely restrict their calories with fiber and so on, who then suffer from lack of energy. He's actually kind of on the money about that because most online nutrition advice is aimed towards diabetics, who need to lose weight so they'll stop being type-2 diabetic, and thus they preach eating like a bird. There's a study out there that most athletes fail to eat enough carbs (based on the recommendations given), and thus they start taking stimulants and other methods to make up for it.

Approaching character limit

His most controversial take is the sugar and that's what makes other vegans hate him (most of it is for his personality and relationships though). He's more right than wrong about sugar. Fructose causes less of an insulin response than starch and glucose (as dextrose) is an essential part of oral rehydration therapy. Dextrose is put into sports drinks for a reason and if you get the zero-sugar versions you got ripped off.

Sucrose is glucose+fructose in case you don't know. Sugar is also only a moderate glycemic index and it's questionable if the glycemic index even matters to a non-diabetic. All sugar (starch is sugar) becomes glucose and eventually glycogen, so the source of it becomes somewhat a topic of ideology. People assume sugar is "bad carb" and starch is "good carb." Durianrider recommends the table sugar because it goes down easier than heavy starches (because of fructose) and thus helps him reach his caloric goals even if he isn't counting.

On the topic of how he doesn't count calories, it's actually hard to eat that many carbs every day. Let's take a 2L of soda as an example, because people act like one can of soda is an infinity amount of carbs. The whole thing will actually give you about 234g of carbs (sugar) or 840kcal. To hit that 2800kcal mark, you'd have to drink at least 3x2L of soda, good luck. It's believable that he would be in that ballpark without counting, even if he's pouring table sugar on his food.

The reason pro-carb vegans will still harp against table sugar is because they don't value it as a source of a macronutrient. Rice and such have protein and trace amounts of essential fat. Since as I said before that their focus tends to be on type-2 diabetics (literally just fat people) they steer them away from it. Durianrider wants people to be athletic so that advice runs against what he is trying to do. This leads into that "frugivore" or "starches after 4pm" diet strategy.

Out of characters again but not much else to say.

His other thing is the McDougall "the fat you eat is the fat you wear." It's true that fat is directly stored as fat, with excessive carbs theoretically undergoing a conversion process into triglycerides and then those triglycerides can be stored as fat. It is not true that every gram of fat you eat becomes fat but the level where it does becomes very unclear.

Dietary fat consumption is necessary for the intake of fat-soluble vitamins. However, these vitamins are necessary in the milligrams or micrograms, not in the grams. Essential fatty acids also have a very small, unclear requirement. All the "this fat is good for you" studies I've read just replace dietary saturated fat with omega-3 and such, not actually comparing it to a low-fat diet. The ones I do know that do that are mice studies and the mice get fat when you mix the fat and carbs.

A zero-fat diet is also essentially impossible. Pretty much every food has a trace amount of it which is the whole reason something like vegetable oil can exist. To say someone is doing a zero-fat diet is misleading, as they're just maximizing the carbs vs the fat. Nobody is dying from a "fat deficiency" unless maybe they live off nothing but skim milk. Any "fat deficiency" disorders are always found along with a general caloric deficiency. It's the same deal with protein.

Most of the athletic function of fat is purely psychological, and this is explicitly stated in athletic coaching guidelines. If an athlete eats more fat and performs well, don't fuck with it. Similarly, when you amp up the protein intake it starts to increase fat consumption since dense protein sources come with fat. Even beans have a certain of level of fat in them compared to other vegetables (especially zoy).

If you're active like he demands, it's unlikely increased fat will cause much of an issue. I've seen HCLF advocates admit they eat nuts and shit sometimes, excused by their activity. It's an activity problem.

As I said, bad faith questions. People have consistently proven the benefit of glucose-derived glycogen for athletic performance for decades yet you consistently ignore it because it doesn't follow whatever Youtube ideology you follow, like the ones that try to tell people 150g of carbs will give you diabetes (citation needed).

The source in those images comes from the "Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning (3rd Edition)" from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, which is a nationally accredited organization. The section on nutrition has 104 references that I can't even fit in a screenshot.
