Advice for new runners:- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week);- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months;- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest;- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural; and- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans).>Couch to 5k/Bridge to 10k Guideshttps://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/running-and-aerobic-exercises/get-running-with-couch-to-5k/https://i.imgur.com/ef98R.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/qNJIy.png>I want to run a fast 5k, 10k, half-marathon, or marathonhttps://www.runningfastr.com/https://www.halhigdon.com/cock and ball torturehttps://sites.google.com/view/sub-threshold/home>I want to stretchhttps://www.runnersworld.com/uk/training/beginners/a32172701/how-to-stretch-post-run/>Performance calculatorshttps://runbundle.com/tools/age-grading-calculatorhttps://vdoto2.com/calculator/https://runrepeat.com/how-do-you-masure-up-the-runners-percentile-calculatorhttps://lactrace.com/norwegian-singlesprevious: >>77481497

Damn it, I don't want to rest.
Did another madman workout today
>started running last november>never did any events or anything>did a few 10 mile runs>lost motivation>haven't run in like 2 months>trying to get back into running>can feel the motivation coming back>it's been like 95+ outside>don't want to go to indoor track because it's just as hot but no airflow>figure I could get up early and go>take ZMA, 5-HTP and Krill oil to dream>ask a result my dreams are extremely vivid>hate waking up early because my dreams give me a better reality than I could ever hope for>the longer I sleep the more I dream>dreaming is literally the only thing I look forward to in life>really want to get back to running thoughThis fucking sucks bros and going to bed early won't help as I have that delayed sleep phase shit. I could go after dark but it seems too dangerous. I used to cycle around 2-3 AM but as I get older I get more and more skittish and i can't fathom going out after dark to run, there's just too much risk.

Do we really have to spend the first posts in every new bread explaining why running more than 100 metres doesn't instantly turn you into a transgender gulag prisoner? It's just fat person cope. If you cannot comfortably run a 5k or 10k you are not fit, the end, stop replying to bait.Went out rooning last night, hill reps, there's a good hill near me that's almost exactly 400 metres that I run up and down.
>>77497473>Went out trooning last night
>>77497473If you cannot comfortably run a 20 minute 5k or 45 minute 10k you are not fitftfy
>>77496558Not until it has you running for 10 or 20+ minutes nonstop, anyway.
Hello. Just started running for the first time in many years, want to get my cardio up. Currently doing a 5.6km run about every other day, but don't have a strict schedule. I run 5m, then walk 2, then run 7, walk 3, run 7 and walk 3 until done.Is this a good idea? Will this help me improve? Should I be more ambitious?
>>77497930I hope that's 5 minutes and not 5 metres lol. Sounds alright. Maybe try to job lightly instead of walking if you can. Also have a clear plan for how you're going to go from what you're doing to a continuous 5k. I've never done it but what you're doing sounds a lot like c25k, maybe look at that.
>>77497934yeah 5 min lolWhat would be a good timeframe to start upping my difficulties? A week? Two? I checked out c25k and the like, but it seems like I'd have to devote myself to following an exact plan and that just aint gonna happen
>>77497938If you're recovering well between runs then you can probably run for an additional minute before resting every run or every couple of runs. Consider that c25k can get any unfit sod to a 5k in a matter of months and plan accordingly.
>>77497951thanks anon :3
>>77497930>>77497938>>77497954Its good you've started, anon. I can not imagine any at least half-responsible man not able to jog 5km except for reasons of old age, illness or disabilities.Every other day is fine and alternating between running and walking is fine. You may wanna try decreasing the run speed and increasing duration of said intervals. You will be able to finish the entire 5.6km jogging/slow running in no time. Godspeed!

Hmm... Nyo.
>>77498085Pretty gud. 1080s?
>>77498108Yeah. I'll probably get a new pair around 1200 kilometers.
>>77497262>>77497131Yeah. The whole "getting help won't affect your clearance" is a huge fucking lie. Anyway I did go out and run, 90F with a feel of 97F at 1030AM. What a mistake that was. i ended up walking most of the 5k I did. On the upside I did get over the thing of not wanting to take my shirt off and run so there's a positive atleast.
i've been running 5k's almost daily for the last 7 weeks now so i figure it's time to ask, whats the best rooning shoes for around $200 ?my current ones are falling apart amd i don't feel like shattering my knee's anymore.
>>77497930personally i would aim to find a pace you can just run / jog at without stopping and build upwards from there.eventually you'll enter a meditative like state where you zone out and without realizing it you'll start getting faster and faster.
>>77498276Yeah, I used to have one. From what I remember, there were some issues where it was fine, but others were secretly a huge fuck no. After I stopped doing green badge shit, I tried to get help but my mental state was already too fucked. so now I just run.
>>77498278I generally trust this website for shoe reviewshttps://runrepeat.com/For daily running? new balance 1080s.

>temp went back up where I am>Tried to run a 5 mile which I just did earlier this week>Gassed out hard several times, had to walk for probably a fifth of it
>>77497930It's good IMO.I started out walking 12 miles 4 times a week at a 20ish minute/mile pace, eventually race-walking down to 15-16 minutes after a few months and now run 10 minute miles. This was done over the course of 7-8 months as a fat cunt.
12 mile 4 hour walks 4 times a week is insane imo

>>77499115Upvoted good sir!
mayn, i used to listen to hip hop and death metal when running as it helped the time pass quicker but nowadays i really enjoy just running with no audio whatsoever, its much more peaceful and relaxing.
>>77499125agreed, especially in remote areas/hikes but living in a dense city with car earrape fucking BLOWS
>Gale force winds and pouring rain all morning>Clears up for a while, looks like I can go out for a run>Try for a 5k PB>Right at the turnaround point, get absolutely hammered with sideways rain the whole way home>Clears up just as I arrive, and stays fairly nice for the rest of the afternoonIt was still kind of fun, maybe I should get into trail running.
>>77498085Coming on a thousand kilometers on mine too, gel venture 11. Got them early february. I feel like they're still fine, which is good because I can't afford to replace them right now lmao.>>77498975Yeah same, ish. Started with a stationary bike in like november 2024, then walked around march 2025, then power walked around idk june, and when I couldn't walk faster I started running in september.>>77499125Never felt the need for music while running, I just enjoy pushing myself a bit.I used to think jogging was dogshit boring and "wow I get why people listen to music while 'running'", but now jogging's gotten even easier too, it's almost like, idk meditative and restful, which deletes time nicely.>>77499165idk when my usual paths got destroyed by heavy rains, I went to run at and around the park in the city, it wasn't so bad. Now yeah sure, I'd rather not go there, but it wasn't horrible. I did shoulder check some dumbass who wasn't looking where he was going and nearly collided into another runner coming the opposite way, though lmao.
>>77499367Oh yeah, speaking of being unable to walk faster.I feel like I'm getting stuck again for the same reason as walking that I just can't move my legs fast enough, I can't quite go beyond 160 spm average unless I'm sprinting.Any tips? I guess besides "just move faster lol". I'm 192cm tall, I understand the taller you are the lower spm, but I'm pretty sure I'm still way below average. Even on intervals when I'm trying, I'm barely at 165 spm.
>Take a break for a week after a m*rathon>Eat hardly anything but protein and fatty chocolates and ice creams>No running either, just upper body stuff>Almost PB today's half maraCarbcels...?

>>77499387I'm on the same boat as a 5'8 manlet. I love using a metronome and have previously kept it at 190 bpm for months but having recently increased it to 220 bpm has helped with a minor improvement in consistency.
>>77499407As far as I know you need carbs even when your metabolism is using mostly fats. Without carbs there wouldnt be any use of the fats. So, it may be that the few carbs you've taken in, may have been enough for your particular setup... or >>77499414 (more likely, imo). This sounds anecdotal and maybe it is at this point, but few years ago this is what I found in the back of that rabbithole
half marathon tomorrow.Knee flareups since april. Not much (~8) runs in august.Wish me luck bros
>>77499387You need to become The Chad, with tiny, beetle-like strides.Your problem isn't that your spm is too low, your problem is that your strides are far too long. And you're probably also landing with your foot out in front of your centre of mass ("overstriding"), which adds braking force and makes you slower. Your foot should land under your centre of mass and travel backwards, NOT land in front of you.Try mentally visualising gum on the bottom of your shoes, and that you're trying to scrape it off with every stride. You can also try this exercise: stand on a stationary treadmill and pick your feet up and down on the spot. Trying to "peel" them off the ground, heel coming off first and then toe. Then, while still doing that same motion, start the treadmill at a super low speed. Then bring it up to a walking speed, still doing that same motion. If you don't have a treadmill, you can do the same thing on the ground. Just try to lean forwards slightly when you start moving, bending at the ankles rather than the hips. The idea is that you're trying to teach yourself to land with your foot directly underneath you, and to have much shorter strides.

Taking part in the annual 10km street run in my hometown next morning. This will be my 4th time participating. My worst result so far was just under 46:30, but I'm probably gonna finish somewhere between 47-49 mins this time. Taking a multimonth break due to a foot injury led to me starting this year from the gutter level. Send me your energy tomorrow frens, I'll need it.
>>77500346sending energy, good luck. What's the winning time like? There are two big historical events for my local (20k pop) town, a 5k and 10k, and I think I'll enter the 5k next year now I'm taking running seriously and getting faster.Ran a 5k in 20:06, can I just say I can run a 20 minute 5k now or do I actually have to do it?
>>77500392Thanks, kind anon. The winning times were between 33:30 and 35:30 for the last few years. Attendance varies a bit, and so does the overall level.Good job on the 5k! My best is 20:21, so at least I have no doubt I have no such bragging rights here. But you might be close enough for this to slide.
>sometimes lower legs hurts when running>sometimes its the lower back>sometimes its bothFuck me, I am not even old or fat, maybe I should switch running to swiming.
>>77500478Maybe you should do strength training and fix your form?

>>77500554Run regularly but keep it short and just add a small amount of volume every week. Like a mile or two at most spread across the entire week. I did this and can run 90 mile weeks now like it’s nothing. Took a while but it worked
>>77500554This is a pretty dangerous combo, fren. Make sure to be extra careful. Cardiovascular capacity is solid, but pay good attention to any signs your body may give you in terms of tendons, muscles and even bones, actually. Ive been ruuuning for some time now and i start to wonder, is it even possible to socialize in this hobby?Lets compare it to say weight lifting, you go to the gym, meet up with your buddies spot each other make small talk between reps etc but none of that is really an option during runnig, especially outdoors? You cant talk because it fucks with your breating, its annoying when you cant run at your own pace since you have to adapt to your groups pace,i really cant see this being enjoyable as a group activity
>>77501245socialising through running is way easier than socialising through lifting, especially if you don't already have friends to do it with. Go to a run club, local races, etc. >can't talk because it fucks with your breatingget better at running and socialise before and after the running.
>>77501247>socialising through running is way easier than socialising through liftinghow so?care to elaborate?
>roll ankle hiking>no problem>knee discomfort/pain>no problem>only drank 3L of water on a fucking 100F day 10 miler>no problem>minor cold and flu symptoms>can’t bring myself to run>lasts for a weekwhy
>>77501264At run clubs or races most people stand about doing nothing before and after the running and talk. Afterwards in particular it's very easy to introduce yourself to someone you were running alongside. If it's a club and an easy training session it's easy to join in with a conversation while running. Plus there's always a good topic of conversation (running) to fall back to.When I went to the gym regularly I didn't know anyone there. Nobody approaches other people, you're all doing different things, people don't want to be disturbed. Maybe this is a cultural thing but I don't see how you could meet people going to a gym on your own. At best you recognise other regular gym goers and nod at them. Also I think cardio lowers peoples inhibitions and gets everyone more friendly.
>>77501270i see, hell i might even try joinnig a club myself. Thanks for the info anon
What do u guys eat?
>>77501245Personally, I enjoy running for exactly the reason that it can be anything from undisturbed time alone to super social. Very enjoyable experience from time to time

I drink my protein shake when I get home. Then after working and/or stretching, I have some fruit. Feels fine tbqh. Then lunch I aim for 1/3rd whole-grain carbs, 1/3rd meat (mostly chicken breast, tofu, salmon and red meat once a week) and 1/3rd vegetables, banana after because it good, some cheese and a small piece of bread. Sometimes ice cream or cake or whatever the fuck, I don't care anymore, it's amazing.Dinner I usually have soup, egg, slices of turkey breast, some yoghurt after. I still fucking snack on like, random biscuits and stuff but not as much as before, thank fuck.
How do you manage recovery? It takes days before my legs feel okay to run again. Do you run on beat up legs? joining a new gym that has a run club. hopefully they are not all slow middle aged women
Apparently my town is starting a cross country club for youths (younger than HS XC), and they need volunteers as coaches. Not sure if I should apply. I like to run, but I've never coached or been coached (other than Daniels Running Formula book). I don't even like children, though maybe I could tolerate kids who run.
I get pain under my right knee on the right side that extends down to my lower shin and idk why its happening. First started 3 months ago and I thought it was an overuse injury so I haven't been running the past couple months apart from a single run in july. This week I started running again with half the distance I was doing back then per run and the pain came back on the third run right at the start. I don't know why its my dominant leg only either. pain doesnt happen when I bike or use the elliptical but theres lingering pain whenever I have to walk or go up stairs. can't find the name of the injury to do more research

>>77501965Sounds like a weak tibialis. Do tib raises every day until it improves. If it's on the inside of your shin rather than the front, it could be shin splints. Fixed with a combination of stability shoes and "short foot" (high arch) drills. If it's right up at your knee, it's the patellar tendon. Fixed with controlled deep knee flexion under load, eg slant board squats. You'd probably benefit from some strength training in general, and maybe having another look at your running form.
>>77501963why do you wanna apply?

anyone ever run a half/full marathon? how long did it take for you to train? seeing people do 10-13min/mile pacing seems so far me to reach..
>>77502270>train
>>77502270I ran casually for 7 years about 20-30 miles a week, then decided last year I would race, so I spent 8 months autistically obsessing over running and ran a 2:58:06 in my first marathon earlier this year. I am training for 2:48 this fall. Just build volume first and then run faster once you can run regularly without getting hurt
>>77502295Did keep running during the marathon or do you ever take walking breaks? 3hrs is so fucking long
>>77502302Then don't worry about it if all you're going to do is cry.
>>77502305It was a pretty basic question, why are you so mad
>>77502302I did not stop the entire time. But there’s no reason you can’t stop. But ideally you wait until you’re fit enough to run the whole way without stopping before you attempt a marathon. Lots of retards are signing up for them and barely training for them. I wouldn’t want to be one of those people which is why I waited so long before I ever signed up for a race.
>>77502270I did a half a year ago. I already had decent-ish base, as I was doing a couple 10Ks per week. I told ChatGPT my weekly running schedule and current times, then had it generate a 2 month training plan for me to get up to my target pace by the race date. It worked.
>>77502207A few reasons: I like running, and anything I can do to get more people into serious running would be good, I guess. Also, I always run alone, so it might be cool to be around other people who are into running. I tried local groups and things like ParkRun, but they were too cringe for me. Also, my whole life I've never done any kind of volunteer stuff, so why not. Also, I have nothing else going on.
I WAS SO CLOSE AAAAAAAAAAAAHLast time I came even close to a sub-30 I went back to the 32 min jail for like two weeks. It's gonna happen again.

To those anons that do high weekly miles (like 30+) how are you with buying new running shoes so often? Supposedly shoes are good for 300-500 miles, so with 30 mile weeks you're blowing like $100-200 on shoes every 2- 3 months? It's not a crazy expense but having to bust out cash for new shoes so often doesn't sound pleasant. Also do you get the same shoes all the time?

do you roon every day? i would like to but i find my tendons in my calves cant handle it. will it get better as i keep rooning?
>>77505374Yes but I couldn’t handle it until I had been running for like 8 years. I started 4 days a week, then 5, then 6, then eventually 7. But you have to moderate your effort. i only run “fast” 3 days a week
>>77505374Just 5 days. I used to do 3 then 4. I don't think I can do more, and then every few weeks I gotta slow down for a week because fatigue just accumulates. rip
>>77505374You work up to it slowly, with most of your runs easy or even recovery pace. After q few moths of adding cca 10% you can start introducing light speed work. The simplest way to set this up (if you just want something to hold your hand and help you along) is to get a Garmin and follow its daily suggested workouts. You can even set a race with a goal time and it will adjust the recommendations accordingly. Otherwise something I always recommend is one heavy gym leg day a week: squats, rdl, bss, and heavy seated and standing calves. This is (at least for me) the recipe for pain free high weekly mileage.

I still can't stop my foot from going completely numb around 30 minutes. I've tried different lacing, newer extra wide shoes, etcNoticed it can kind of get triggered when I run up an incline or hill. Think the problem might be height, but am unsure. What is the move here?
>>77499590Checked this a bit now I could run (couldn't on monday and yesterday actually, rip). I'm pretty sure I don't overstride and my foot does land right below me, but trying to lift the heel off first does feel different so I'll try to mind that. ty Anon.
>>77499590Using your achilles tendons to return elastic energy and speed up by lengthening your stride is the superior way
I don't think you should force changes to your running stride. You can change it naturally by doing drills and strengthening weak muscles and improving mobility. But consciously contorting your body every stride I don't think is a long term solution.
I could run 5k very comfortably just last week, why the fuck do 5.5k feel so heavy now that I just increased it this week?
>>77507177sometimes you just have a bad week, your body is a complex and mysterious organism. Last week I was frustrated that running felt harder and thought I was somehow getting worse after weeks of improvement, this week I'm doing great and finding long runs very comfortable. >>77507361i never understood how people run with others. the faster guy has to probably constantly watch his pace and the slower guys are probably pushing themselves into zone 3. running has always seemed like a solo activity to me. its not like lifting where you can shoot the shit in between sets.
>>77507385most run clubs group up based on speed, so at worst you're running at a slightly slower pace than you'd like, or more likely you're working harder to keep up with a faster pace than you'd normally run. Also a lot of interval training works on times or distances and not speed, so everyone can run however they want and all group up after each interval.
>>77507150idk it works for me. I just force it for a week, maybe two, and then I just do it without thinking about it.

It would be absolutely ridiculous, and I severely doubt it. But I'll take you at your word, and give you another cue. Make sure your head isn't bobbing up and down when you run. Reducing vertical movement makes you more efficient, and in your case it might help to make your running look more like running rather than jumping.Just to clarify, we are talking about an actual running pace here, right? How do I ROON sub 30 5k? I have been running casually for 5k twice or thrice a week but it never seems to get easier. If I only ROON twice or thrice a week, what types of runs should I be doing to improve my timing? Also I seem to notice imbalance/less drive on my left side due to always running in the same direction I don’t know how much it is contributing to my lack of growth but I can notice a difference in the leg muscles. Should I add more auxiliary exercises for the weak side or just ball with it?
easy 10k
>>77508535I'm almost to a sub 30 5k, I only do that one 5k a week and I've been going for about 3 months. Started at 44 mins, down to 32, but that is with a big 80m elevation climb hill at the end, so I think on flat I'd probably get under 30 now. Other people that get a similar time to me seem to do under 30 elsewhere, I probably need to really find out.Only benefit I had was starting at a normal weight, 183cm 78kg when I started, ~74kg now. I got some decent-ish shoes, some shorts, that's about all I've changed. Maybe the hill is what helped me improve relatively quickly, or perhaps it's that it's at a parkrun so there are other people to chase/help pace me.

It's a double-edged sword. But all of the fastest runners barely do any strength training at all, and what they do isn't effective at building strength or muscle.
