Yerba mate is good alternative to coffee or energy drinks. It only tastes bad when you brew it with boiling water (optimal temperature is around 75-80 centigrade).The "yerba gives you throar cancer" is a typical 'correlation not causation' case. Study was done on Argentinias with a bad habit of drinking mate piping hot, and it turns out that drinking hot liquids increases your risk of throat cancer. Type of liquid does not matter, it can be coffee, tea, yerba, plain water... if it's above 60C it can cause thermal damage to cells in your throat and thats it. Repeat that damage over and over and you get cancer.

It's superior. It has way more caffeine but it doesn't give you anxiety like other sources, it also widens your airways. There's also mixes with other herbs that have other benefits.
