Anybody addicted to alcohol who managed to stop? How on Earth do you quit drinking (if you're an alcoholic)?
>>
>>77529806
I tapered down over the course of two weeks. The first 5 nights completely alcohol free were pretty shitty. Sweating, shaking, couldn't sleep properly. But now it's been a year and a half and it's the best decision I ever made.

How do you not want to chase that high anymore? Life just seems so dull and boring after you've been exposed to that high.

Face the fact that life without it is harder and there is no pleasurable reward to stop drinking that poison, life will feel less fun and you'll have to face it without an escape hatch. There is no magical solution. You will have to regrow your brain by living in a less immediately pleasurable way and find the same dopamine reward through unpleasant effort and meaning-building. If your sober life feels depressing and boring you will have to build the one that doesn't and that requires great deal of courage and hardship

That's the truth addicts hate hearing because they desperately want to find an easy, pleasurable way out of their addiction but there is none. Much in the same way there is no comfortable way to grow your muscles or delicious way to lose weight, you will have to nail that shortcut-based-pleasure-seeking on a cross and embrace actual, unpleasant road of recovery. And every slip up will make it harder to continue but the more you go up that road the easier it will be

Mind you, that doesn't mean abandoning search of happiness or pleasure altogether, it means chasing them in a difficult way that leads to growth, meaning and health. You should absolutely replace drinking with activities you enjoy putting effort in to get a reward

I don't really debate addicts, do whatever you want with your life. If you want even better high to ruin your life on jump straight to heroin or at least enjoy hours long goon sessions on ghb like a real gaba-receptors-stimulation enjoyer instead of a beer guzzling redditard normie
>>
>>77529840
>Life just seems so dull and boring after you've been exposed to that high
It is. Anyone who says sobriety is better is a fucking liar.

If it's something you truly enjoy I suggest you get it under control and make it something you indulge once or twice a month. If you can't accept limits then you should stop altogether. Don't drink yourself into permanent issues that prevent you from ever drinking again. Always keep in mind that ultimately it is poison.
>>
>>77529806
i was a pretty bad alcoholic who would have really nasty withdrawals during the one or two days a week i didn't want to drink (due to a compound hangover from the previous 6 nights of getting blackout drunk) and i quit alone without a recovery group and have lasted over two years thanks to one concept: hobbies. find one hobby you can obsess over and snag a few on the side. i play a variety of musical instruments and make music, develop software, work out, shoot and edit photographs, go swimming, and i'm really into film. the one i obsess over is music. i used to romanticize drinking and doing any of these things at the same time, but then i'd just get drunk and never fucking do any of it. between work and hobbies i literally don't even have time to drink anymore. that's all it is, you just have to fill your time with whatever else.
>>
>>77529851
No I mean thanks for being a voice of reason but it really sucks doesn't it?
>>
>>77529869

It does because you're in a briar patch and the only way out is unpleasant but the good news is that the joy you actually earn through effort and personal growth feals much better and meaningful, free of guilt and gnawing feeling of pointlessness

A good way to think of any addiction is a cheap, harmful substitute for an actual spiritual longing underneath that requires difficult change. Depressants give fun, warm security you'd otherwise have to earn by being a strong and successful man with full personal freedom and power over your life (as you actually want to live and find meaningful). Stimulants give exciting pleasure you'd otherwise have to earn by being successful, desired and admired and so on. It's a way to shortcircuit actual required growth and personal development which is insanely hard but the only correct way to maximise joy in your lifetime (both in volume and duration)
>>
>>77529840
You have to fill your life with fun and fulfilling activities and events. You seek the alcohol high because you inherently lack them, so you use it to artificially boost yourself to where you'd be if you had a good life
>>
>>77529806
I got a DUI and quit cold turkey for a year. When I first stopped I went to AA and I became a sobriety guy. You have to gain an appreciation for sobriety, for me, this was easier because alcohol completely wrecked my life so I wasn't especially nostalgic for it. I didn't even complete the first step of AA but it gives you an environment where alcohol is treated with a real gravity, it gives you a new perspective on the stuff. These days I drink once a month and I don't ever let myself drink more than that. That said, while I did drink a ton, about half to a whole liter of vodka a day, I don't think I was/am a true alcoholic. I'm able to limit myself and have discipline with it. This may change in the future. If you are a genuine alcoholic however you will have to stop drinking forever. Anyway OP, go to AA, take it seriously even if you don't complete steps, just do it for the coins lol, but take it seriously.
>>
>>77529806
I'll never understand how people get addicted in the first place

yeah immediate effect is nice, especially for socializing
but I start to feel like shit maybe 4-6h after a drink and my whole next day will be ruined
starting by having the worst sleep imaginable
then headaches and the overwhelming feeling of sickness the next day
literally happens every time after just a single beer or glass of wine
>>
>>77529806
I simply stopped buying it and putting myself in situations where its readily available.
Now I don't even think about drinking.
Occasionally, but rarely, I will have a drink or two, but only on special occasions.
The hangover afterwards is enough to deter me once again.
I used to drink fairly heavily too. Multiple beers a day and hard liqueur.
Packed it in three years ago and I feel its one of the best things ive done.
>>
>>77529978
You just drink again as soon as you wake up and those feelings don't exist nearly as much.
>>
>>77529840
Alcoholism ruins your brain chemistry. It takes time for your brain to produce chemicals like GABA, glutamate, dopamine normally. Drinking alcohol takes up a lot of time. Find new things to do to fill in that time. You won’t feel like doing them but do it anyway, you have to let your brain heal. It can take many months to be able to enjoy life sober again because you rekt your brain chemistry.
>>
>>77529978
Believe me, I used to think the same way. Your body can absolutely become hangover resistant. It also seems each person has a few brands that don’t cause hangover effects as bad.
>>
>>77529806
Smoke pipe tobacco instead to relax

Drink a small bottle of whiskey for the weekend to take off the edge
>>
>>77529806
Once I got all the IQ lowering benefits from alcohol I just stopped. Didn't have a reason to continue.
>>
I simply experienced the hangover, the loss and ruin of the day after drinking and decided either I love and want the things im capable of achieving the next day, or I want to temporarily dampen my experience in some gay little jewish form of escapism (alcohol) and sacrifice progress. And there isn't a final end goal, the progress/journey is what you need to fall in love with.

Drinking daily is the worst thing you can do. You end up broke, in a dirty house, pissing off everyone you know, in legal troubles, fat and out of shape, depressed and anxious, and stuck in that situation due to physical and mental dependence. >>
>>77529806
If you truly have a problem then you won’t quit until you’ve suffered enough. Nothing will change that behaviour other than reaching the breaking point of suffering. Some people’s threshold can be very low, other people’s threshold can be non-existent. Suffering is the only cure for addiction unfortunately. Speaking from past experience
>>
>>77531580
They have medications to take away the cravings though, and you don't have to suffer as much as white knuckling it?
>>
>>77529806
Got a buddy who quit outright after tripping for his first time on shrooms. Didn't even trip for that reason too
>>
There is some evidence that GLP-1 lowers desires for addictive stuff like alcohol and cigs. You loose the desire to do it
>>
>>77531590
It's true. But the problem is that the cravings come back once you stop.
>>
>>77531590
I'm on Tirz and I'm not so sure. I find that what stops me is the fact that I'm paying $300 a month for this medication. If I drink I feel like the world's biggest retard for negating my gains.

I tried to drink in moderation. I bought some vodka instead of beer to keep the calories down. I thought, cool, I'll just have 2-3 shots total. Not great, but fine to do a few times a week. 9 shots later, I shot that idea down.
>>
>>77531585
The suffering is what you need, if you don't suffer you won't grow stronger
>>
>>77531615
How do you even have the desire to eat or drink?
When I was on Mounjaro I didn't even think about alcohol despite being a daily drinker.
>>
>>77531622
It hasn't had any effect on my desire for liquids, not sure why. Food-wise is a different story. Don't think about food at all except for the fact that I have a protein target to hit. I miss it most days because I feel like I'm foie gras.
>>
>>77529824
Same, though I tapered over months as I couldn't cope being sober so quickly. Went from 15yrs of daily drinking with last 5yrs of hard drugs before getting help.
>>77529840
That's the rub, gotta figure out why you drink and replace it with healthier alternatives.
>>77529857
>It is. Anyone who says sobriety is better is a fucking liar.
Generally it just takes time. Especially if its been a part of your life for a long time, doubly so for hardcore drunkards whose brain/body can take years to return to baseline.
>If it's something you truly enjoy I suggest you get it under control and make it something you indulge once or twice a month
Also this, 100% straight edge life is not for everyone. I certainly cannot cope without substances but the key was very much in moderation and finding ways to deal instead of immediately escalating substances.
Now, 9 out 10 times I can deal/cope, I have hobbies and meaningful things in my life but sometimes you just want to turn your brain off for a while.
>>
>>77529840
It goes away eventually. It's an addiction, it can be overcome. I used to polish over half a 26oz of straight vodka every night for years. Now I drink a couple light seltzers over the course of a month and frankly it kinda makes me feel grossed out now, it's just a social thing. Just trust me, we all thought life without alcohol would be unbearable, but if you have repressed emotions that's the first you gotta confront, and it's gotta be confronted sober. I believe in you, whatever your story ism
>>
>>77531585
True, but only suffering will ultimately create that initiative to quit. The approach, whether that’s rehab or medication or cold turkey is up to you.
>>
>>77530076
>just drink again as soon as you wake up
sleep is still shit
and again it starts on the same evening

>>77530084
>Your body can absolutely become hangover resistant
so you purposefully go through hell just to some day drink alcohol?
sounds really fucking stupid

>>77531204
>I think you might actually have an allergy
allergies are incredibly rare, an intolerance would be more likely
but the symptoms don't match
it's just regular alcohol breakdown in the body and the side effects
either I'm just sensitive to it or most other people just like suffering
>>
>>77530084
>>77531684
I don't get hangovers or vomit anymore but oh boy my entire body hurts all day from drinking the previous night. I know I'm killing myself but I can't stop. This is madness.

>>77529806
I was a bad alcoholic for about 5 years. Was drinking 2-3 bottles of port a week plus whatever was on special in the grog shop.
I quit after I went out with friends and ended up as an absolute fucking mess, pissed in front of everybody, kissed a girl that didn't want it, spewed through the taxi on the way home and my buddy had to clean it, offered to suck my friends cock while I was drunk, nearly died because I vomited in my sleep and was lucky that my friend heard me choking and saved me.
Was one of the lowest points of my life and I only know all of this because my friend called me a week later and essentially said that I need to get my shit together.
Was a severe wakeup call, I didn't want to lose my friend group and I felt extremely grateful that they all forgave me after the fact.
I tapered down slowly so as to avoid withdrawal and then after about a month of cutting down I stopped completely. Haven't had a drink in over two years now and I feel significantly better for it. I lost weight, got my life back in order and have no intention of ever touching it again. Fuck moderation, I believe I am just disposed to not being able to handle it so I'm staying away from it.
I literally got a wake-up call and will always be grateful that I quit before I ruined my life.

Serious answer: NALTREXONE

I was addicted to alcohol from around 2018 to late 2025, going up to 1 bottle of hard alcohol per night. It's been 6 months sober now, no cravings, no suffering, just sober like I was before.

Naltrexone has to be taken 1 hour before you are going to drink; it greatly diminishes the euphoria you feel from alcohol, to the point you are left with nothing but its negatives: dehydration, brain fog, withdrawal, etc. I got my hands on naltrexone at the end of 2023, and since it was relatively expensive for me (i live in Eastern Europe), i couldn't keep a consistent supply, so probably could have quit earlier.

Initially, it helped me quit hard alcohol. I then moved on to drinking just beer, occasionally boxed wine. After i got some of my shit together, i got my hands on a more consistent supply of naltrexone, at which point I was only drinking beer out of habit. Eventually, i got to the point where i just didn't want to drink that night, and then it became a second night, a third, etc.

Since late November 2025, I have drunk alcohol twice, months apart, and both times i took naltrexone beforehand to be safe. Both times were nothingburgers that just made me HATE alcohol; I didn't fall back in to a binge or anything, like before. Have had 0 drinks since March of this year, and i have 0 desire to drink. I still get the urge to drink when i am at a gathering with friends, which is more out of social conditioning, than actual craving for the substance. I jsut drink soda or some sort of juice and move on.

Naltrexone absolutely works, it is not addictive, it gives you no calmness or euphoria, and it doesn't work as a painkiller, so there is no threat of getting hooked on it. WOrst side if effect is when you keep taking it, it can make you anhedonic to things other than alcohol, but then once you quit taking it, you go back to normal.

Ok but how do you just... stop? At that stage your life just revolves around drinking and when you stop how are you able to find anything else to distract yourself from wanting to drink? What do you do with that time?
>>
>>77531779
Nah, she was in the friend group and I ended up apologising that week to her. We are good friends now and it is considered water under the bridge and she has told me many times that she forgave me because I took accountability and made a real change.

I'm going to the doctor later to try to get this after reading about it all day. Thanks.
>>
>>77531785
Spent a bit over a month tapering down slowly and taking a fuckload of thiamine (alcohol and benzos are the only two drugs that will kill you if you suddenly cease them) and just kept repeating to myself that if I don't quit now that I'll end up as a deadbeat with no friends. I filled my evenings with reading and mornings with exercise. Tried to stay as busy as humanly possible with social events and work. The first two months were the hardest and then I could just feel my routines starting to embed themselves. I had the advantage that I had quit smoking a year before after a decade straight of smoking more than 20 a day so that was a massive boost to my confidence.
There is a thing called the smokers paradox basically it's presenting yourself with the choice of committing to your addiction for the rest of your life or quitting forever.
Most people don't quit their addictions because they assume they always have more time to do it. "Ah fuck it I'll do it tomorrow" kinda shit. But if you present yourself with this as a binary decision it gives you more fortitude and commitment.
It doesn't matter if you fuck up, but you should try again and again with the same goal until you achieve it.
>>
>>77531564
I took naltrexone. It removes all of the enjoyable parts of drinking. You just feel dizzy and weird and still act like an idiot and are aware of it but still do it anyway you’re drunk.
>>
>>77531803
Did it help? How bad was your boozing and how long did it take to ditch booze (if it worked)?
>>
>>77531799
Took me probably 20 attempts to quit drinking. At 9months sober, I still think about maybe drinking once a month or something. These thoughts creep in. But I would have to account for the calories and I would just be sitting alone in my house not doing my house cleaning and cardio so fuck it. My healthy habits outweigh the unhealthy one.
>>
>>77531807
I drank 75oz of 8% beer a day on a normal day, and at least once a week I drank more than that. I had withdrawals, not DTs but shakes and hallucinations sometimes. I was inconsistent taking the naltrexone. Ultimately the combination of going to AA meetings daily, naltrexone, and weekly urine testing got me 3 months sobriety and after that I had the habit kicked and just have to remember I can’t even have one drink ever again because I’ll go right back to how I was.
>>
daily drinking from 14-31. 3 weeks away from my first year booze free. i HATE it. theres 4 places to buy booze just in my neighborhood. quitting drugs was easy, ditch my phone and no more contacts just dealt with withdrawal a little. booze i literally cant walk 15 minutes without being reminded of how easy it is to get ahold of.
>>
>>77531813
Well done for persevering. You'll thank yourself forever. I still think about drinking every once in a while but it's much easier to suppress now
>>
>>77531818
That’s good to know. Hopefully one time the thoughts quit creeping in. It’s weird how I still think about it but it isn’t a compulsion like it once was. I can dismiss the thoughts.

If you get it, the key is to ONLY take it an hour before you are going to drink. You don't take it in the morning or anything. If you aren't going to drink, you take nothing.

It works by killing all the good feelings alcohol gives you, so your brain gets trained to have negative associations to the alcohol. This is why other methods don't work as well and why people often end up falling in to binges, their brian gets reminded of how good alcohol feels and gets you back in to it. When you take naltrexone, you are basically doing the same process in reverse, where your brain learns that alcohol is nothing but bloating, brain fog, withdrawal, dehydration, hand shakes, etc. so after some time, alcohol becomes completelly unappealing.

I know for a fact this shit works, because it worked on me, and i have my Naltrexone reserve to prove it.
>>
>>77531820
I don't think the thoughts ever totally go away. Now I'm at the point where I can comfortably smell alcohol, reminisce on the good times but not actually drink it. Discipline is like a muscle, every time you abstain from it when you are tempted you are putting in another rep.
I found a lot of my psychological distress resolved after quitting drinking because I wasn't having a major depressive drug several times a week (alcohol doesn't just affect you when you are drunk on a physiological level)
>>
>>77531836
Oh I know, my GABA/glutamate was fucked. I acted weird all the time. Talked to much, way too anxious. I would have to take work breaks all the time because anxiety was keeping me from focusing. Awful experience.

Sounds similar to mine. I work in a really high stress environment and my anxiety was utterly kicking my ass and fucking with my decision making.

you need a reason to be sober. you cant stop drinking just "to be healthy". being drunk is infinitely better, but if being drunk impedes with your hobbies or goals then youll stop. if you spend a weekend drunk watching anime but you forget 90% of it, was there really a point to it?

Your doc is retarded and probably trained to tell you stuff like this for monetary reason (keep you hooked up on something). The Naltrexone method works by blocking the joy of alcohol, and thus conditioning your brain and body that the substance is undesirable. Pretend to listen to your doc and take it the way i tell you, 1 hour before drinking (it takes about an hour for the drug to fully take effect, don't feel too stressed out if you take it right before drinking or a bit later). Taking it when you don't drink is completelly pointless, it doesn't kill alcohol cravings on its own. Take another pill 4 hours after you start drinking as well, if you aren't going to drink anymore, then don't take it.

Every person that has managed to quit alcohol with naltrexone has taken it this way, me included. If the doc has given you access to Naltrexone, GOOD, but don't take it the way he tells you, don't take it everyday even when not drinking, that's just a waste of money.

1 HOUR BEFORE DRINKING. TAKE ANOTHER PILL 4 HOURS LATER IF YOU CONTINUE TO DRINK. DON'T TAKE IT WHEN YOU AREN'T GOING TO DRINK AND KEEP THE PILLS IN RESERVE.

There, that's the protocol. You will gradually feel less and less desire to drink, for me, hard alcohol was the first thing to go. You will still need some willpower, as you have built up a habit, but using said willpower will be drastically easier with Naltrexone. Eventually, you will get to the point where alcohol just feels pointless.

Yeah, but assuming you’re not exaggerating and you really are experiencing that from literally a single bottle of beer or glass of wine, that’s not normal unless you have an extreme intolerance.
>>
>>77529806
Number 1 thing is wanting to stop. Not "I should stop because it's unhealthy" but genuinely wanting to stop. I was happy to burn bridges with all my friends and family to keep drinking. I actually quit when I noticed my concentration and memory slipping. By that point I'd also built up enough of a tolerance that I didn't feel many benefits.
Number two thing is changing your environment. Pretty much all research points to a change in environment being most important and I can personally attest to it. I struggled to quit for about a year. After moving from one shithole to another, the itch was gone.
I can't manage drinking socially, but fully abstaining is easy.
>>77529965
I see this sentiment a lot but I disagree. I was socially awkward and hobbiless before going full alcoholic. I picked up new hobbies like music and actually enjoyed video games again thanks to drinking. My coworkers also liked me more when I had gin for breakfast. I quit drinking and am back to being an asocial freak my new coworkers tolerate.
I haven't started any new hobbies or relationships since I quit, but I did replace alcohol with sparkling water and coffee.

Not really. I much prefer sobriety. What feels better to me is having a clean house, not embarrassing myself going to bed on time and getting plenty sleep, never throwing up, never dehydrated or headache, etc.

You sound like a little pussy faggot. Probably never break a sweat in your life.

Damn, I just found out Trump doesn't drink or smoke. Particularly because his older brother died from alcoholism and warned him against ever picking up the habit. Makes me feel like an even bigger fucking loser for being an alcoholic.

The easiest way to never get addicted to alcohol is to have your mother die from it
I laugh at alcoholics that could never be me

How did she died?

Getting drunk is simply not as fun as you think it is.
It's almost impossible to see from inside but if you can make it to a year it becomes very obvious.
At least it did for me.

What is fun then? I can't remember a life of sobriety anymore.

Not exactly alcohol but drugs in general but she did drink alcohol sometimes. About 10 years before she died she was a really heavy drinker and never fully kicked the habit, and the long term damage probably didn't help the laundry list of problems she had when she died as well. She still had some from time to time. I think in general I'll never really try anything more hard than caffeine and the occasional one or two drinks on a special occasion. There's alcohol in the house right now but it's been there for years mostly untouched. I think like new years and a super bowl were the last times I remember getting drunk and I wasn't getting wasted I had like 1 or 2 shots.

I’ll take being a pussy over being a drunk idiot any day

You’ve trashed your brain chemistry with alcohol and can’t imagine a life of enjoyment without it. That’s sad as fuck anon. Look at a child that is playing and having fun. You’ll never be that happy again because you think happiness is in a bottle of booze. Pathetic. Kill yourself. Unironically.

Bro what the fuck I'm trying to quit man.

Once your brain heals and starts producing chemicals like it is supposed to, you’ll find things are fun again. It takes a long time. Like a year.

Ok, the price to pay for being an irresponsible fuck with substance abuse I guess.

I was one of the worst I ever met. Homeless and drinking mouthwash. Would go right into DTs if I didn't have any for a day. Turning to the Lord Jesus is the only thing that worked, I tried everything else for years.
Everything that isn't God will let you down in the end. Choose the One with the keys to eternal life. Peace and joy are here man.
