>The intention test
The most concrete instruction in the suttas is the food reflection: a monk takes food not for play, intoxication, or beautification, but "simply for the survival and continuance of this body, for ending its afflictions, for the support of the holy life." The question is never what or how much - it's why. If you're eating because you're hungry, it's need. If you're eating because the food is pleasurable and you want more of that feeling, it's indulgence. The same applies to rest, entertainment, socializing - any sensory input.
>The effect test
The practical benchmark is: does this increase or decrease the mind's steadiness and capacity for insight? A good meal, a rested body, a walk in nature - none violate the path. Trouble begins when pleasure becomes anesthesia - when you can't sit still without reaching for the next hit of stimulation. The test is whether the mind becomes more or less free after the experience.
>The middle point moves
This is the part that surprises people. The "middle" isn't a fixed midpoint. As one commentary explains: sometimes you need to push toward the austerity end (sitting longer, going with less food and sleep) because pleasure is fostering unskillful qualities. Other times the middle slides back toward comfort because the body genuinely needs rest to sustain practice. Discernment is what reads the conditions - today's needs differ from yesterday's, and the practitioner adjusts accordingly.
>Commitment vs. experience
The crucial distinction: Buddhism doesn't forbid pleasure or pain - it forbids commitment to either. You can enjoy a meal fully, taste it, appreciate it, and then let it go. The indulgence isn't in the experience; it's in the pattern when the mind that can't be content with what's present and is already reaching for the next one. As one practitioner put it: "acknowledge the taste, allow yourself to feel it, and then once it's gone, let it go. Don't ask for seconds, or lament its absence."

Practise Christianity instead.

I'm spiritually Christian, but the way Bufdists practice life is actually appealing. What if I acted good and kind to my neighbors for the Lord, but carried myself and my living like a Buddhist? What if enlightenment and oneness with the universe brings me closer to Godliness?

In Buddhism, no need practice. Just be good person. Kindness and compassion.

In Buddhism it is celebrated when you act like a spiritual nigger and abandon your children.

Meditation can be nice though

I once heard that Buddists also tell you to accept the responsibilities for things you do in life, such as promises to keep or being responsible for people you are responsible for.

Buddhism is incompatible with Christianity but spiritual practices like meditation and celibacy are universal and cool as long as they don't replace actual prayer.

I'm not Buddhist, but I do practice meditation and eat your flower of enlightenment to help delay aging and help prevent brain cancer...

Seriously read Walden by David Thoreau. It's undoubtedly Christian literature but it is deeply loved by eastern religions like taoists and Buddhists for its writings on serenity snd meditation
