Advice for new runners:
- Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week);
- It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months;
- If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest;
- Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural; and
- Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans).

Forgive me father for today I walked.
>>
Weather's going to be so shit here this weekend that I may have to do my long run on a tr**dm*ll at the gym.
>>
>>77580267
Same. 15km for about 1h40min on a treadmill. I guess I will just watch other people in the gym to not get too bored. Should I bring a gel?
>>
>>77580276
>Should I bring a gel?
Definitely. Only benefit of running on a treadmill is that you can bring all the gels and water you want.
>I guess I will just watch other people in the gym to not get too bored
The treadmills at my gym face an empty parking lot. I'll probably just put on a podcast and zone out.
>>
I have a half marathon in 4 weeks and the longest run I've done is 10k. But I am in good 5k shape so I'm going to try to break 80 minutes. Don't try this at home.
>>
>>77580267
How shit? It would have to be a storm for me to consider the tr*eadmill for a long run. Even 30 minutes is bad enough. I find shitty weather is only bad for the first few minutes then you just get used to it.
>>
>>77580431
Storm Austen, wind force 6-7 plus rain all weekend. I haven't been on a treadmill in 15 years probably, but I'm laying the groundwork for a half marathon next spring so I want to stay consistent with my training.

here is today's run. 10k with 6k tempo in the middle. headwind then tailwind. hr was even coming down when I was running 3:30s because of the tailwind
>>
>>77580439
Continuous rain at around 10°C. I just don't like it wet and not warm. Also waiting for that potential 2h weather window is miserable

What exactly does that mean, fren?
80min seems pretty ambitious. Godspeed!
>>
Should I graduate from fast walking to running? SRS
>>
>>77580508
I ran 15:30 a few weeks ago. 3:50 pace is reasonably comfortable, I can do 10k at that pace easily but I don't know if I can hold it for 21km. No worries if I blow up I'll just enter another and train properly for it next year

Any recommendations of anti-chaffing creams or tape for nip chaffing, btw, guys?
>>
>>77580612
I just got the cheapest sports tape and no more hurt nipples. Had to shave my chest though
>>
I fucjing hate strava whay else can I use pls help.
>>
>>77580716
The Garmin app is pretty decent, but if you don't want to get a new watch there's always Nike Run Club.
>>77580609

>>
>>77580716
Strava is pretty shit for anything other than simply uploading your runs but it's fine for that. Just get a watch and don't record on the app.

How do you guys cope knowing that Vinny Mauri built his 2:05 marathon on a Planet Fitness treadmill?
Treadmillchads keep winning, it's not even fair.
>>
“The weather’s always good inside” - Treadmill Chad.
>>
>>77580861
Well several hundred better runners than Mauri never touched a treadmill in their life. Not that it makes a difference to me. Train whatever way you want and I'll train whatever way I want
>>
>>77580861
To each his own, but that lifestyle just isn't for me.

44 on average, it seems
>>
>>77580995
Currently 51, but I'm on my second americano of the day, after having two cups of coffee earlier in the morning. At night, It's ~40. Lowest I ever got it was like 36, about 15 years ago.
>>
>>77580995
64 just now, seems about right, but I don't wear a heart rate monitor so I dunno what it'd average out to. It was somewhere in the mid 80s just a few months back when I starting running. Surprising how quickly it changes.
>>
>>77580955
I would try vaseline or one of those overpriced anti-chafe sticks before shaving my shit and putting on pasties.
>>
>>77580995
Low? Sometimes I need ear plugs to sleep because of the noise, I can ear my heartbeat in my ears real well, and when I get into bed, the intervals between heart beats creep me out a bit tbqh.

>>77581023
I was kinda hoping for brand names or something, ig I'll just see what the local sports store has to offer if anything.

Running a marathon this weekend. Ever since my last 21mi long run my leg has been acting up and I've been dealing with tendonitis. It's feeling okay rn but my knee is still tight and my shin hurts a bit. I'll use KT tape to patch it up and hope I can finish the race.

Any last minute tips to help me get across the finish line?
>>
>>77581116
Isometrics temporarily alleviate pain, but generally the long-term fix is to strengthen the tendons. First with controlled weightlifting focusing on the eccentric, but then with plyometrics.
But it's way too late for you now. Just try doing some pogo hops and squat jumps a couple of times today and during your race warmup tomorrow, and hope you don't make it worse.

Well done. How? That is so much time
>>

i mainly cope by recognizing that i'm a shit runner who will never be competitive at anything and have to enjoy the training for itself instead of a greater goal of making the olympic team

bros is it possible to get to a 7:00 min/mile in under a year if I commit to it?
>>
>>77581329
I'm 78kg 5'11 completely average build
>>
>>77581547
easily unless you're morbidly obese
>>
>>77581547
I started from nothing, the only thing I had going for me was not being overweight. In a few months I could probably do a 7min mile, though I haven't tried, I generally do longer distances or intervals. My best mile was ~7:40 but that was while running 3 miles I think. I could probably get it to 7mins, if not now then by the time I hit the 6 month mark.

Just takes consistency. Even easier if you aren't in your 30s.

I've been running three times for months now,
always zone 2 or 3
no improvement so far in either pace or muscle tiredness.
any advice ?

Well my hilly parkrun was cancelled today due to weather so I'll have to crack 30 mins there next week. I drove an hour to get to a different one, much flatter, bit undulating as you go but way better than what I am used to. Absolutely soaked through though, it was hard to breathe honestly with my shirt stuck to me in the wet. Also I couldn't see through my glasses very well.

So about half way through I was feeling shattered, thinking about walking, when a guy goes past saying he was helping this guy to get a PB, I said I was going for one as well, he said well you're on for about 25mins so far. Couldn't fucking believe that so I just kept going, ended up with 26:45. Dead chuffed, about 4 mins faster than last week, mostly because there was no massive hill at the end.

First time doing a different 5k so it's good to know what I can do on a flat-ish course. Actually looking it up now, it's apparently a 31m elevation gain, huh, didn't realise it was that much. I guess compared to the 125m I'm used to it didn't feel like a lot.

>>
>>77582071
Nicely done man, especially given the weather conditions.
>>
>>77581963
makes no sense unless you're doing crazy shit in between the runs to ruin your gains. you are probably much fitter but you don't realize. run a 5k time trial and see what you get
>>
>>77582071
125m in 5k is crazy hilly, bordering on mountainous. no wonder you are much faster. those hills will make you strong
>>
>>77581700
Ok, in comparison the watts seem really low for some reason. Maybe just inaccurate from Garmin. I have almost the same stats overall, also Garmin, 20s slower: Almost 500W
>>
>>77581116
If you run that marathon you will probably come to regret it with the pain and extended recovery that follows, don't do it nigger
>>
>>77580995
45 avg last year, 44 avg this year. Not sure if the true baseline has shifted or i just chilled out more. I tend to have like 39-42bpm rhr, then I do a hard run and it is like 47, 45, back to the lower rhr. So it kinda oscillates like that. I wonder if it will drop even further should I up my mileage seriously or if this range is kind of already near some sort of natural limit. Would love to be solidly in the 30s just to troll medical professionals tho
>>
>>77582473
Even 40 is enough to fuck with them tbf.
>>
>>77580267
Weather was slightly less shit than expected this afternoon, so I didn't have to debase myself on the human hamsterwheel. Treadmill NPCs stay seething.
>>
>>77580149

I ran a 1:34 Half Marathon PR this morning and will now treat myself by gooning to Alysa for an hour.
>>
>>77582514
What is your goal? If you can jog for 30 minutes, add some speedwork like doing 100m, 800m, and 1 mile repeats.
>>
>>77580149
I need to reach 3.2km/2miles in 14 minutes for February, I went up from 2.3km to 2.6km in 14 minutes in 2 months, but it was hard. What can I do? I also started running 2 months ago after years of not running lol
>>
garn give up superlong runs

cannae be arsed
not fun anymore novelty wear off
and reduces quality of run

18 miles longest on sensible route wiv break in middle. possible issue is the cold making breaks less pleasant
>>
>>77580612

get nip ease. They're great. basically nipple shaped tape that stays in place but manages to come off easy. Its all I use
>>
>>77580995
for the past month it's been 42 for me
>>
>>77581790
I ran a 6:40 mile 6 months ago and Im 40
>>
>not all female car drivers
But ALWAYS a female car driver. Stay safe out there, fellas.
>>
>>77582142
Cheers, yeah I gotta get used to that weather if I'm gonna keep consistent over the next few months.
>>77582427
Yeah it is a pretty rough course to start with, but I think it's helped a lot. Really glad I didn't give up early on, I think that hill can be super demotivating to a lot of people. I do need to add some strength training for my legs throughout the week, that's probably a good idea.
>>
>>77582684
Nice time bro.
