Has anyone here tried Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength (SS) AND Bill Starr's The Strongest Shall Survive? Everyone has heard of SS, but if you haven't heard of Bill Starr's model, you basically do 5x5 bench press, squats, and power cleans as your standard workout. You increase the weight on each set, so your last set of each lift will be significantly heavier than your first. It is meant to be a basic regimen, performed 3x per week, to optimize strength gains while giving yourself time to work on other things; in Bill Starr's case, his "students" were cillege football players but of course you could spend the extra time however you want. I've never made a serious attempt at either regimen, but maybe someone here has tried both and prefers one over the other?

Sounds like Mike Mentzer's routine

That sounds completely pointless. What does it accomplish?

i just go to the gym and make it up as i go

It maximises the actual stimulus
If you're doing 3 sets across (or worse, 5 sets ala stronglifts) the weight probably isn't a real 5 rep max, or you'd be in the gym for hours recovering enough to do the next set. So actually your 5s across weight on any day either (a) is a true max, and you're absolutely grinding yourself down trying to get 3 sets of it, or (b) it's not a true max, and at best you're only hitting a high intensity on the 3rd set, by which time you're already pretty fatigued and you can't engage maximal contractions and maximum mechanical tension, so a lesser stimulus.
Starr's 5x5 has you ramping up, which means the first 3ish sets are a warmup, the 4th is a primer and the 5th is a real, genuine intense stimulus. This was the smart way to do it, and it's how many lifters had done it before, and it's something rip got wrong because he's a fat moron
In fact, so many things that people complain about SS for, Bill Starr already got right
Abs
>starr has you warm up with incline and decline crunches, unweighted so as to stay trim and not build unaesthetic mass in the abdomen
>rip says just do squats for abs
Squat form
>starr teaches you to squat naturally
>rip demands that you squat low bar, fuck your hips, shoulders and back
Variants
>starr includes many variants for the main lifts, and recommends when you might prefer one over the other
>rip says YNDTP
Diet
>starr has a whole nutrition section of his book, and discusses appropriate macros and relevant energy systems
>rip says if you need to gain weight just gomad
Progression
>starr discusses various progression methods and alternate rep schemes
>rip says it's fahves and SS then texas method and that's that

That's basically all wrong and stupid. What are your lifts?

What is this, some new shit? Nobody here knows this guy, we all started with Conjugate Method.
Day 1 - speed power cleans with bands and chains off a bosu ball, 23 sets of 2 reps, 16 second rest inbetween.

Texas Method is what you're "supposed" to do after SS and the heavy day basically Bill Starr's 5x5 because as you said, the 5x5 is a ramping set. I briefly skimmed the book years ago and it was something like a 1-2 top sets.

I wouldn't recommend Bill Starr's because beginners don't need to be grinding out death-defying maximum effort sets. It's universally shown they can leave a rep or two in the tank. It's only the more advanced people (and Bill Starr coached heavy-duty athletes) who need to start ramping everything up to a level where you can't sustain it for 3 sets.

I don't really like SS, except for the power clean, it mogs other "strength" programs because of it. However, between Bill Starr's or SS I would choose SS. You wouldn't "waste" your time on any of them though.

It's called a ramping set you moron.

I usually add +5 on the last set. So if I was starting from 1pl8

Warmup: bar x 10
135 3x8
135 3x8
140 3x8

Rest

Good idea?

>You increase the weight on each set, so your last set of each lift will be significantly heavier than your first.
so you're doing like 3 warmup sets and 1 or 2 work sets great
