It's because the 7900 GRE GPUs was meant to be sold as 7900 XTX mobile chips.
Not enough laptop OEMs wanted those chips, so AMD sold the leftovers as the GRE.
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/sapphire-radeon-rx-7900-gre-pure/4.html

The Steam Machine's using leftover RX 7600 mobile GPUs.

didn't know that. i had a rtx 4070, 7800xt, 7900gre, 7900xt and 7900 xtx and 9070xt over a few months to test and use in my system and if i had to rank the heat that all those gpus produced when testing it would have gone a bit like this.
4070
7800xt
7900gre
7900xt
9070xt
7900xtx
i know that amd up until recently never reported the total board power draw like nvidia (since the 600 series i think) does (from the pcie to the 8 pin everything down). so the 7800xt and 7900gre have the same tdp on their site (260w) but the 7900gre performs a bit better.

like USB or S/PDIF. Really depends on how many things and what you want to connect. Also regular bluetooth or aptX or no bluetooth at all.
>outputs
it's handy if your DAC has a headphone amp built in. 6.35 jack is the least complicated as you can just slap an adapter on a 3.5mm, I haven't had any headphones with 4.4 balanced so no idea, XLR tends to be for high end stuff. RCA or XLR outputs on the backside for active speakers or amps. It can be a nice to have to have multiple outs that can be used simultaneously for speakers and a sub but this heavily depends on your setup
>additional features
volume knob should be the bare minimum, other DSP features like filters or EQ, displays or remote

Rule of thumb is not to overspend especially if this is all new to you. You'll likely get everything you need already for 100 to 200 bucks. Premium "can" be better but this comes with a price and eventually you just pay for snake oil. I'd stay away from random online sources claiming things to be the best as well. audioscience can be somewhat trusted I guess but I'd still take it with a grain of salt. I think FiiO and Fosi have some more budget friendly DACs, Schiit tends to be popular but there are so many brands. The Cambridge DacMagic 200m I used for a long time is already more pricy but other than the ground loop I had with the device turned off it's simple and works just fine. Otherwise you may want to look up the recommendations of the headphone general in the archives

GRE has the better chip, a cut down Navi 31 vs. Navi 32.
AMD also undertuned the GRE card's stock VRAM frequency which is needed for mobile GPUs.
There's a significant amount of VRAM OCing headroom with that card (2250 MHz vs 2438 MHz memory clock for the 7800 XT).
They probably didn't care to test a higher memory frequency version of the GRE chip.

NVIDIA's non-flagship RTX GPUs are generally power efficient because they're designed with mobile use-cases in mind.
The desktop 4070 is part of the AD104 GPU family, which includes the mobile 4080.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/nvidia-ad104.g1013

Laptop RTX 5090 & 4090s are basically downclocked and power limited desktop 5080 & 4080 chips.

used DDU for a clean reinstall of NVidia drivers and now all my games are chugging and running worse. think its been too long (10-15 min in game of metaphor re) for it to be the shader cache and vulkcan seems fine after driver reinstall, heres the DDU settings:

GENERAL
remove present and non-present monitors
save log files in startup path
create a system restore point
auto check for DDU updates
remove vulcan runtime

NVIDIA OPTIONS
remove C:\Nvidia driver folders
remove 3DTV Play
remove Nvidia broadcast
remove Nvidia shader cache

AMD OPTIONS
remove AMD Crimson Shader Cache folder
remove AMD control panel

no Intel options checkmarked

I know it probably got rid of something for me I just dont know about and need to reinstall, but I cant find out what, any help?

>so amd can make efficent gpus. they just don't want to
AMD knows their Radeon GPUs aren't as popular as GeForce, and they also can't charge a high premium like NVIDIA can.
So AMD designs a more cost-efficient (smaller) chip with fewer cores that boost higher and draw more power.
That 9070 XT vs 5070 Ti power draw chart shows this.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-9070-xt.c4229
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-5070-ti.c4243

They also commercialized the MCD + GCD GPU packaging tech for higher end RX 7000 video cards to minimize the 5nm die size required per chip.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-7900-xtx.c3941
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-4080.c3888

AMD's largest gaming GPU customers are console manufacturers anyway.

i would do that because it would boot the boot manager of your windows ssd install on your hdd. you'd have to turn off your sata port or unplug the hdd so only the ssd is visible during install.
>>

you can unplug the hdd (or just turn off the sata port for it via the bios) during the install. it would let you choose the install to boot via the boot menu.
if your hdd is bigger (esp your c: partition with windows on it) than your ssd. you'd have to resize those partitions and make room.
>>
>>108869234
The 5800 XT is discounted to $230 in the US at the moment.
The floor for the 5800X3D was always going to be at least $280, realistically $299 MSRP minimum.

I'm in the process of planning my rebuild for my home server/NAS/automation etc box and I'm trying to decide if I should throw in one of my 'old' GPUs
>Asus ROG Strix NV 3090
or
>Sapphire NITRO+ AMD 9070XT

This box is going to be used both for NAS type storage (Samba/NFS shares, maybe using TrueNAS) or a at least aand any sort of server/homelab / automation / selfhosting etc...usage depending on needs. WIth this in mind I'm wondering if its better to keep the 3090 or the 9070XT? I know the 9070XT is likely more performant and its FOSS driver compatibility on Linux, but the 3090 has additional VRAM. When it comes to self hosting and messing around with AI models, I'm unsure if its worth having them on a separate server box and then connect to them via client with the high performance main rig, or if its better/necessary to just run them entirely on the PC with greatest GPU, RAM etc..performance.

honestly I think buying a pc now is dumb as shit for 2 reasons: 1) AI bubble prices, 2) we're near a big roadblock for new hardware which is sub 1nm lithography, I believe gen over gen improvements are going to slow down a lot once we hit 1nm and every gen starts just being 0.1nm smaller than the previous so I think buying a pc in 2030/31, probably zen 8, with 1nm will hold it's power much longer than what we're getting right now
I'll be on 5700x3d 5800x3d until then

Does anyone know if XPG has already updated the new batches of the ADATA XPG CYBERCORE II 1000W 80+ Platinum PSU?

we don't know what'll happen next, every new pc component could have forced AI and botnet malware built into it at the hardware level, pcs themselves could evolve into something not useful for gaming entirely.

I'm of the opinion that my early 2025 master race rig was the absolute, objectively best time to upgrade for a final time, outside of new gpus later on.

anything with an npu can be that, amd's last generation without an npu was zen 3

isn't it hilarious that arrow lake is 3nm and zen 5 is 4nm and it still beats it? intel is getting overhyped last few weeks because of their foundry, but their foundry is still far worse than tsmc, who doesn't even use high na euv machines for their stuff yet and, what most people don't notice, their chip designers still suck compared to amd's, losing with 3nm against 4nm is a really sad affair.

i doubt it's getting much lower. prices recovered a tiny bit lower than peak, but i think we can expect this to be the new normal.
even if all AI companies imploded overnight prices still wouldn't go back to last year's levels. when prices go up like this and people still buy, the companies get the message that they should have been charging more all along.
the only saving grace would be china's new manufacturing, but that seems very much intended for domestic rather than export sales.

I need a new 4k screen.
my previous one finally croaked after only working for about 5 months with the RGB loop problem.
its a XG27UCDMG and the problem is that when I turn it off it ends up in this annoying RGB loop where it blasts red, blue, green, white colors fullscreen in an endless loop.
I kinda got around it having to unplug it fully, hold the button down for like 20 seconds, clicking it once, waiting 6 minutes until some relay in there clicks and then running the installation for its firmware, then there is a 50/50 chance the screen turns on or gets stuck in the loop again.
what a piece of Asus shit but from what I gathered all these screens are fucking garbage nowadays and my problem (among other issues) seems to be very common.
So what kinda Screen should I get now to replace this Asus turd?

bad youtube videos that have no information laypeople might have a need for, and it can only serve as "direct hate/harassment in this direction" or some 4channers who repeat words from the vids without any understanding of the topic

This is so fucking dumb. I bought 192gb of DDR5 for about $600 in 2023. I now need to buy 2x32gb for my NAS, and would need to pay more. At least I can still get another 22TB HDD surely for less than I paid back then. WAIT A MINUTE. This is all terrible.

Asked this in another thread but it might be better here:

Should I build a PC now and get the best parts I can get or should I wait until next year where all the new DDR6 RAM, GPU, and CPU lines come out?
The recent Nvidia 5000 series lineup was full of AI shit and fake frame generation, so is there any confirmation that the upcoming stuff is gonna be more of the same? Is this the last Gen to get "real" hardware with "real" performance? Will scalpers and supply lines still be an issue in 2027 and just fuck my waiting time?
I'm thinking of getting an AMD CPU and GPU since it would benefit Isreal the least, but I'm not sure if there is any info you anons may have that would render this idea mute or neutered; work and life has made it hard for me to keep track of AMD, intel, and Nvidia to see who's fucking their customers the least.
>>
>>108877144
>upgrading within the same socket
Would only make sense if you had some bottom of the barell, but unless you specifically only play something incredibly cpu bound then it's a waste.

>>
>>108877161
Sadly, more of the same. The 6090 is going to be two 5090s put together when it comes to tensor cores, as alluded to in the DLSS5 announcement, but with marginal improvement in raster due to the extra die space needed for the former.
>>
>>108877677
>only $5000!
>you watch this motherfucker still gonn' buy it!
>>
>>108877161
Rtx6000 should be a die shrunk rtx5000 with more of every structure (shaders, rops, tensors etc.) and more clock speed. And a couple of niche hardware features here and there that won't be used for several years, just like what we saw going from rtx3000 to rtx4000
Rdna5 will be a huge uarch upgrade to include all the hardware features that's missing in rdna4, since it's funded by Sony and Microsoft, so it should be on par with rtx5000 in feature set at the least
>>
>>108877161
>caring about "real" performance in fake vidya
>>
>>108877677
Raster is fine, graphics cards need more PT and tensor performance to make denoising and neural rendering cheaper
>>
>>108877161
>DDR6 RAM
Lmao that isn't coming out for another 4 years
AM5 still has zen6 and zen7 which will be the latest and greatest until 2030. Intel's upcoming, unreleased lga1954 will be having 3 generations of CPUs up until late 2029, all on ddr5.
>>
ddr5 is a terrible generation, if you're still on ddr4 you should stay in it until ddr6, 5800x3d will carry us to ddr6 easily
>>
>>108877161
>DDR6
you won't see that till 2030

>new rtx cards
They won't be released until late 2028 and will be paperlaunched vaporware.

Hardware is dead. Expect things to only get worse from here on. I don't expect things to het better for another decade atleast. The supply chains are collapsing and mom and pop hardware vendors are being hit hard right now. Raising prices is ine thing, but alot of builders and resellers are having trouble finding stock themselves. Scarcity isn't being fairly reported on. We're in the false sense of abundance stage right now.

Worth upgrading from a 3070 to a 5070 for 1440p aiming at 120-158fps, usually 120fps is more than enough for me, so I cap games at that.

just want to say that the monitor market is absolutely atrocious. you have to make such a compromise switching to OLED (which is essentially non-useable if you play static games like cs2 or use any type of productivity program). I want a 4k, 32 inch option with a 240hz+ refresh rate and there is literally no option. I'm forced to stay with my gigabyte mu32 144hz for now which is great but I just want more hz for what I'm using it for
