Idk why but dragging and dropping urls is buggy for me now on Linux. Anyone else experienced this? When I drag and drop a url it will freeze the window for a second and sometimes I have to move my mouse on and off the window to get it. Multiple times I've even dragged a url onto mpv and had a completely different mpv window crash somehow.

btw, youtube has absolutely dogshit bitrate for 1080p av1 streams.

try this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAsmrKyMqaA

I think the 1080p stream has a bitrate of 600kbps or something, and it looks like superass.
>>
>>108877824
>btw, youtube has absolutely dogshit bitrate for 1080p av1 streams.
...as opposed to?
the vp9 stream is only about 20% more bitrate, for a (usually) 30% less efficient codec, h264 is almost 50% more bitrate... but it's generally a 70/80% less efficient codec at 1080p and upwards
the quality target for youtube encodes across codecs is nearly identical, there will be edge cases where h264 wins, cases where vp9 wins, and cases where av1 wins, but overally you can't just compare based on bitrate alone considering the whole point of these three different codecs is that each is more efficient than the previous one.
the av1 streams are actually usually more overkill in bitrate if anything, usually the same or only slightly less than vp9 counterparts.
There's just no reason (usually) not to go for the av1 streams, you're getting the same quality for less bandwidth/disk space
>>
>>108877824
>>108878091
1080p24/30p always have very bad bitrate unless you use premium vp9 format
>the vp9 stream is only about 20% more bitrate
premium vp9 is 2x bitrate of normal vp9 for this video

I use it everywhere. Only extra line in config is enabling hardware acc., defaults works for me just fine.
>>
>>108877236
Yes, it allows you to use the gamepad to control MPV (by setting the input keys). It might be a bit of a niche use, but basically, you or especially someone else, can control MPV via the pad without MPV being in focus. Furthermore, many software generally don't care about gamepad input, so you essentially have a remote control specifically for MPV (which is different from using a mini keyboard).
>>
>>108877824
On Windows, it's easy to carry around MPV with you using portable_config, but sometimes you never know what computer you'll be using it on.
I've used it on PCs that are now over 15 years old, and I can assure you that on some machines, using H264 is mandatory.
I prefer to discard AV1 and VP9 by default; if you prefer, you can always use MPV-quality-menu to select what you want.
(I didn't even pay attention to the fps limit at first, I added it later)
>>
>>108876224
change it
>>
>>108877824
>>108878091
after downloading a shit ton of youtube videos I can safely say that the vp9 stream is usually the highest visible quality you're going to get out of it.
There are very specific scenarios where av1 does look better but youtube bitstarves the fuck out of it so vp9 ends up looking better 99% of the time.
h264 only makes sense for really ancient videos and sometimes that's still not good enough. It's very shitty no matter how much bitrate you give it.
>>
>>108877824
youtube encodes to constrained quality with bitrate limits. so you will actually get worse quality with videos that hit the bitrate limit, and thus appear to have adequate bitrate, because their complexity means they are not hitting the constrained quality target.
low bitrates usually indicate low complexity in the video, while hitting the constrained quality target.
it all looks shit still, of course. because the target quality itself is shit. and the encoders (and fast encoder settings beyond rate control) are shit.
>>108879179
i don't know if this is still the case, but the best "workaround" was getting higher bps (bits per pixel) by hitting a higher resolution group without maximizing resolution. e.g. uploading 2016x1134 videos and getting 1440p bitrates for them. but this obviously requires uploaders to do this for viewers/grabbers. and with 4k generally available, one might as well "overshoot" with that.
>>
>>108873221
i use it for watching fast sports like tennis from the DVBT tv tuner card which spits out .ts files, you enable hotkey (B) for bwdif deinterlace in the input.conf and horrid mpeg2 broadcast video becomes crystal clear like watching 48 fps instead of 24. no other players i've tried have as good deinterlace:
input.conf
b vf toggle "bwdif=mode=send_field:parity=auto:deint=1"

exactly, i just had a lua script made for splitscreen video using two playlist inputs and the centre and side videos running separetly the script control shuffles of the side videos while normal mpv commands control the centre video. then theres the scripts for netflixs singular choice based movie bandersnatch, thats anoptehr thing, if some thing you might also be some thing most people want theres probably already a script for it.
