Is anyone else not excited about technological progress anymore?

Sure having a console for example run on unified architecture is way easier for devs to develop their games, however I miss when the Cell CPU was a piece of shit to work with it had it's own charm to it

The PlayStation 6 might as well have a "better" CPU and GPU and your games might run a bit better

R&D era is over, anon, it's time for enshitification and total surveillance. There is nothing to get excited about.

Tech was cooler when hardware was weaker and was the focus and main differenciator and software devs had to do serious engineering feats to get around the limitations.
Now that software is what makes the difference in terms of money, hardware has converged into the couple standard forms that enable the software most reliably, which are also so powerful that 99% of coding can disregard optimization.
Most software is soulless and lame enterprise/saas shit where engineering quality barely matters compared to the "business logic", so most technology of a software dominated era will also be soulless and lame. It is what it is.
We're never getting a tech era as cool as the early electronics and computing eras.

OP here

To further elaborate I was recently watching a Digital Foundry retro video about the PS3 in 2005 and I found it interesting how far we've moved to now like comparing equivalent CPUs

Nowadays everything is boring and runs on the same stuff, it's quite telling when the PS5s biggest upgrade was the SSD and the Controller
>>
PS3 was a terrible console though.

Just wait until consoles need in incorporate neural engines so they can render AI upscaled stickman drawings. That’ll be interesting. The future is coming, even if /g/tards are too clueless to see it.

I think Kutaragi's vision was to utilize the cell by itself, without the added GPU, where the SPEs would take care of the graphics. Of course he forgot to think about how it would be competitive against a more traditional approach.

There's no need for expensive and/or exotic hardware.
If SONY wasn't so tied to AMD they could easily switch to an ARM/Nvidia for the next generation to take advantage of their superior ML upscaling.
It's the most logical combination for a console at the moment.

IIRC the plan was to include two Cells and have one render graphics, or maybe dynamically divide logic and rendering across them as needed. A single Cell with all 8 SPUs active gives around 204GFLOPS and I see numbers around 218GFLOPS for the PS3 GPU (~Geforce 7900GT) so in terms for raw number crunching they're close enough that the idea doesn't sound crazy at first. My guess is the GPU can do a lot more in hardware like texture filtering which has to be done in software on a Cell and this is why the math doesn't work out in practice.

How can you be not excited about AGI?

>Technological progress
Hasn't existed for a long time.

Power, heat and price are important considerations.

have you been under a rock for the past several years? I'm an LLM hater but it's still cool to see what we're capable of making silicon do

How can you post this shit with a straight face?

A big part of it for me is that it feels like the era of consumer electronics is coming to an end. By 2036 I think most people will be on some kind of network dependent thin client that connects to Azure and that's your PC.

i am excited about progress on better porn slop, if that matters

By seeing that it's not real, and even if it was it would be controlled by Indianized companies, censored into the ground, and used for the worst things possible. Getting excited for AGI is like getting excited for imaginary AIDS.
