As I have already predicted (>>108859155), AV2 happens soon.

The commit https://github.com/AOMediaCodec/avm/commit/87aa8dc44e8a40f992604111a5ce83cf413ec9b7 says that the release happens in a week (“2026-05-29”).

Get ready!

I think I'll pass on this one, I only have DVDs and mostly 720p anime blu-rays to compress. AV2 is only meant to compress well at 4K/8K, right? AV1 seems like it will be good enough for most people for the next decade or so.

But 4 Channel won't support it.

That's not right.

See https://arxiv.org/pdf/2605.15800 for details.

> But 4 Channel won't support it.

4 Channel supported VP9 after AV1 was released.

Maybe here we should wait for AV2 as the trigger for AV1 support.

(Though, of course, “post hoc ergo propter hoc” is not always true.)

>4chan supports release - 1 versioning
What did they mean by this?

I got really tired of waiting man, I'm moving over to umigalaxy once I understand AV1 a little better since that allows AV1 uploads TODAY. I created the thread about turning off SSIM cheating in AV1 and later on tonight or tomorrow night I plan on making a windows script that will automatically keep encoding AV1 video until a desired SSIM value is achieved. I'm cautiously avoiding VMAF since it was developed by a streaming company known for punking out low quality video to consumers.

Maybe consider making an account over there and becoming my AV1 obsessed fren. I'm still thinking about username to adopt. I was thinking something something AV1asdfasdf but while I do like video compression I don't really want to base my whole identity around it.

Still using MPEG2 and AVC
Streamed media is worse with each new codec release. 1080p 3MB/s is not the way to go forward, I'll tell you that.

It can now be fixed though, see post above you. It's just that pretty metric numbers (even if innacurate) lead to more investors. It was a double edged sword for AV1 when you think about it, IMHO there were 2 outcomes:

A) AV1 doesn't cheat in SSIM day #1, it's primarily created for perceptually high quality, no high frequency detail smoothing tricks, no active grain supression, no structural similarity boosts to cheat in SSIM.

Result: AV1 crushes H.264 and is widely adopted by movie archivist groups, everyone else sees that AV1 is only 20% better than H.264 (on day #1 anyway). Investors move onto supporting VVC instead, the only real royalty free video codecs that remain are slow-as-balls VP9 or worse-than-H.264 VP8.

B) AV1 uses hacks to inflate SSIM scores, wows everyone (importantly investors) with supposed 40% better compression over H.264. Later adds options to disable SSIM cheating.

Result: AV1 actually gains momentum, VVC is stillborn, nobody is forced to use VP9 against their will anymore. Movie archivists can later discover SSIM cheating can be turned off and high frequency detail greatly improved and grain isn't turned into butter anymore.

So it's actually much more efficient at "regular" resolutions than AV1?
>>

30 years later we'll still be using H264. It's just works the best on anything, where AV1 requires more recent hardware and more power.
Archivists might jump to it for size convenience, but everyone knows that changing codecs for saving size is no way an archival should be handled.
Torrents like YTS still use H264, however more recent anime rips appear to come in H265, maybe due to it being the way it was encoded to begin with.
Newer codecs are cursed with people and companies who re-encode media using them to save space which results in artifacts such as smearing as they use different methods compared to H264. This results in 4k videos that objectively look worse than 1080p releases from 10+ years ago, but they will shill you that 4k is obsolete and you should buy a 4k display.
>>
Why only heavy codecs that take years to compress are being developed nowadays? Where are new fast codecs like h264?
>>
>>108882524
Still in use. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

the bald finnish HRT-taking faggot called daiz wants normalfags to be brainwashed into thinking shit quality is good quality so they won't complain when jews serve everything outside of the paywall in shit quality.

fun fact: normalfags refer to tel av1f as "the youtube compression" and they abhor it.

you chose the most idiotic thing to scam normalfags with, daiz. it's why your psyop has been going on for years.

Avif won.
