it's alright but you can get cheaper laptops that are just as alright

Why would I buy a laptop with 4 ports when a laptop with 6 ports is cheaper?

Thinkpads let me upgrade the motherboard and CPU?

the framework 13 pro sounds sweet for battery life on linux. anything less expensive that is comparable in the thinkpad space?

framework users vs steam deck users

who is more annoying?
>>

Bro... Anyone would take that thing. The problem is just, that these are double the price. You can buy a high end laptop now and buy another high end laptop in 2 years for the same price
>>
>>108888353
/g/ hates it because it was actual crap for the price of a macbook pro. Shockingly jank actually. The new Frame Work Pro one is the first one that is actually worth purchasing. They still put side firing speakers on it because they are retarded. Also why a touch screen? Linus tip techs convinced them that was what people wanted didn't he?
>>
>>108888353
>very expensive
>nobody making 3rd party parts
>garbage trackpad, no other option
>no 14'' form factor
>gpu bay only on 16''
I don't care that pajeet made the company. I like the idea and I'd pay the premium many times over if I could get a trackpad that doesn't suck alone, let alone if it could have a good form factor.
The serviceability aspect is worthless if there are no good parts to use.
>>
I wanted someone to make something pretty much exactly like a macbook pro but not from apple and that's exactly what it looks like they're doing and I'm pretty hyped for it.
>>
>>108888482
I don't want to defend Frame Work but the "muh ports" thing is stupid. It's not a feature. Most people do not use all of those ports. But thanks for swiss cheesing the chassis with 5 million different ports and standards that collect dust because I only every use the one USB-C port to connect it to a dock which has all of those ports again. Apple was right from 2015-2019 when they took away all of the ports but the thunderbolts. The thunderbolt (or USB-C) can be literally any port you can want, but no, you MUST have a random assortment of USB-A, ethernet, HDMI, SD card, etc..Thunderbolt can be any of those things but those things can only be one thing by themselves. Like putting a touch screen on a laptop, people are just pants on head retarded. Companies need to stop listening to consumers because consumers don't actually know what they want.
>>
>>108888353
If you have no ambition to upgrade beyond RTX 5070 12 GB (was limited to 8 GB VRAM until last month!), I guess it is cool for a light usage device.
>>
>>108888977
If Apple just stuck some drivers in the Linux kernel and allowed people to fully remove Mac OS that would be tops for me. I don't know why they are so protective of Mac OS though.
>>
>>108888353
They copied the fagbook aka one of the least comfortable laptops. Literally unusable unless you are retarded and don't know any better. i'd buy one immediately if they copied a good stinkpad instead, but no, they had to target the retard market.
>>
>>108888353
It's too expensive for me so I'll use my $200 thinkpad instead but I don't hate it. Maybe in 5 years I'll get one used.

Nvidia really are a bunch of kikes with that. I watched a video of chinks just soldering more ram on Nvidia cards and enabling it in the drivers somehow. So they cards are perfectly capable of having more but Nvidia wants you to spend $5k on their "ultra mega ti" or whatever

When I worked at a datacenter it was so much easier to touch certain things than it was to use a touchpad on the chromebooks we had.
You think it's stupid till you use it then you miss it when you don't have it.
>>
>>108889057
Nah it's dumb. Most people don't do niche things which would make that actually useful. Are people actually moving their hands from the keyboard/touch pad a couple of inches just to smear their screen with their greasy fingers? Why would you do that? Is it because people are basically toddlers and need to be able to poke the pictures with their fingers to interact with things?

No, you're simply wrong here. Moreover touch screens increase the price of the monitor by like an entire fucking order of magnitude for no reason while limiting possible qualities.
>>
>>108889138
Clits are for inbreds who like aesthetics over practicality.
>>
>>108888730
>saying motherboard and CPU separately
You're essentially paying for a new laptop when you "upgrade" your Framework. Genuinely a meme laptop for LARPers.
>>
>>108889093
I guess it depends if your hands are preoccupied or not.
My dominant hand almost always had a scanner so it was much easier to use your non dominant hand to touch something.

>>108889141
Touch screen monitors are pretty cheap. You can go on Amazon and get a portable screen that was clearly a laptop panel for $100
>>
>>108889182
> I guess it depends if your hands are preoccupied or not.
> My dominant hand almost always had a scanner so it was much easier to use your non dominant hand to touch something.

That's what I mean when I say it's a niche thing that doesn't apply to most people. The touch screen should be limited to specific markets where it is actually needed. Otherwise, if people want to touch the screen, why not just get a tablet. People touching the screen aren't using it for work anyway.

legit complaint. no reason to make trackpad mandatory. I never use it and it just gets in the way.
>>

>You're essentially paying for a new laptop when you "upgrade" your Framework.
>Doesn't answer the question.
So that's a... "No." Then.

Congrats on your point, however: No shit. Same as I would with the Thinkpad.

So I'll ask again:
>Thinkpads let me upgrade the motherboard and CPU?
>>
>>108888945
The haptic one for the 16 may be good, maybe.

>>108889138
>Clit mouse
Disgusting. Just like women.
>>
>>108888501
Is the wifi chip not integrated in the cpu chip package? Atleast for Intel, i'm not sure what you're expecting Lenovo to do about that.
>>
>>108889603
Haptic touchpads are demonic. The only good thing is three dedicated buttons below the touchpad. Everything else is anti-productive.
>>
>>108889598
Framework doesn't let you "upgrade", they let you replace the entire motherboard with the soldered on CPU (and RAM on some platforms) and you're hyperfixatig on this one point out of buyer's remorse or some shit.

Framework's "modular I/O" is basically a worse implementation of Macbook's old dongle hell. You only get four USB-C dongles and that's that. On a ThinkPad I get robust I/O without the need for dongle cope.
Framework has worse build quality than a ThinkPad. all those modular bits and bobs means the frame is less rigid as to make it easy for you to change meaningless shit like the screen bezel.
Framework offers less at the same price compared to even a brand new ThinkPad, with which you get Lenovo's extended business warranty, even when buying the more budget models.
>inb4 didn't answer the question
I don't have to. Framework is a worse product than a ThinkPad.
>>
>>108889771
All the "good" things you said about chinkpads are so beyond the pale it's hilarious. Are you a bot or what? You don't get SHIT for insurance, I tried. The build quality is worse than shitty dell inspirons. New chinkpads cost the same thing as the framework and have fuckall IO options. The chinkpad has soldered ram and soldered cpu.
>>
>>108888353
Unironically this. If you actually care, buy a used/refurbished laptop and run it into the ground. The damage was already done "once" when it was bought new, by buying used you at least avoid doing more damage.
>>
>>108888353
I convinced my company to get me one. Its quite nice to be honest, nothing special, but better than fucking Dell
>>
>>108890176
It's outstanding to me how terribad nuDell is. Literally toy-tier even on their business lines, wtf. They used to be really good, too, with full metal rigs, great prices, good specs, and good customization.

What's the M5 Macbook Air equivalent in the StinkPad world?

I was looking at new laptops and was surprised to see none come with Sata anymore.
How am I supposed to get 1TB for peanuts? 1TB 2.5 HDD's are like $20.

>>
>>108888415
>>108888425
You'd rather buy a laptop from companies like Lenovo and Apple which each employ thousands of jeets than the company (Framework) that only employs a single jeet?
>>
>>108888482
your mom only has 3 ports, but thats more than enough for me
>>
>>108888501
I'm pretty sure Thinkpad has WLAN card whitelist. This practice goes all the way back in the IBM day so this isn't recent enshittication.
>>
>>108888353
i pre-ordered a 13 pro, which i won't receive for months.
far cheaper than a similarly specified thinkpad t14 gen 7, which is what i was looking at ordering.
>>
>>108890965
>single jeet
Yeah, just like I have one mouse in my NYC basement
>>
>>108888353
A used t14 ThinkPad is like 200 bucks. A new battery is 50-60 bucks. 260 bucks for a laptop that will last years. Why would I ever buy new?
>>
>>108888730
CPU could be upgraded yes. I owned a T440p and if I wanted to, I could have put a quad core i7 in it to replace the dual core provided that I replaced the charger with a 90w I think.
Did eventually replace it with a HP EliteBook that I got a good deal on as wanted something more modern and didn't find a ThinkPad I wanted at the time. It's not the same but it does the job I need it for.
>>
>>108890432
Get the larger ones. 15 inch laptops come with sata drives.
>>
>>108890405
>he thinks the windows craptop market can compete

>>
buying a used laptop is much more environmentally friendly
>>
>>108888353
>haha how about you pay higher-than-apple prices for a midrange stinkpad laptop from 2023
haha how about no
>but you can replace a broken usb port!
i haven’t had a laptop where anything broke since about 2015
>>
>>108893660
The replacement peripherals is not for 'broken usb ports', it's so you can put on an eth port when you need it while having usbc instead by default, or so you can put on a vesa port because your work's projector still hasn't been upgraded to something hdmi-compatible, without having to use dongles that break all the time.

Also obviously you can even replace the ram and gpu as you would in a desktop computer.

But the price is too high to be worth it, you'd need steady upgrade options for 20 years on at a good price for this to make sense at the pricepoint they ask. Far cheaper to just throw away your laptop every 5 years and buy a new used one.
>>
>>108889598
>>Thinkpads let me upgrade the motherboard and CPU?
No and that's a good thing
>>
>>108888353
It's cool in theory, except the cost is prohibitive by comparison. You can just buy a used/open-box laptop if you care about the environment and want to save in the first place. I view the Framework not as an "e-waste avoidance" thing, so much as a tinkerer's fuck-around computer. It won't hit the top of the line specs either. So, it doesn't even fit the prime enthusiast's or professional's needs. It's very niche.
>>
>>108888353
>>consumer friendly laptop
No, the prices are straight up a rip-off.
>>saves the environment by reducing ewaste
How so? You are effectively supporting more ewaste, normal people will just buy normal laptops just because you buy a repairable one doesn't change anything. What's better for the environment is buying 2nd hand, it's one more or multiple more devices not ending into landfield.
>>/g/ hates it

>>108888353

>>
>>108888353
It's overpriced for what it is
Not exactly the manufacturers' fault, they're getting fucked by economy of scale, but the why doesn't interest the end consumer, only that they can get a better* product for their money
