Oh.
We are so far behind it's not even funny.

Look, China has its issues but I'm genuinely impressed at how they do actually seem to be trying. They're investing heavily in things that actually matter, while most of the West is politically deadlocked on non-issues and detailed by Israeli interference.

That said, how is this specific example supposed to be more inpressive or important than the National Ignition Facility at LLNL, which has been operational for over a decade and is already producing valuable results?

>could serve to improve nuclear weapons
How?

Every major nuclear research facility can contribute data to refining the designs of nuclear weapons. It's open knowledge that all the US national laboratories contribute work to this, including improved modeling and simulation of existing designs, refinements, and design of new more efficient physics packages.

More efficient fusion warheads is a good thing whether it's the US, China, or any other nuclear power. They can be made more reliable and cleaner, which just means stockpiles can be smaller, fewer launch systems are required, and replacement can be less frequent which reduces the overall economic and environmental impact of maintaining effective deterrant capabilities.

Don't worry, the capitalized "Sun" is clearly referring to doctor Sun Yat-Sen here. While he may have belonged to the Four Bandits, his energy attacks were kinda mid.

the problem with laser fusion is that it only works if you discount the laser input. They are working on better lasers at that size but so far those don't exist. Also the yield strongly dependents on fusion material used currently its like 2 or 4 they need 8 to break even and 200 to be able to complete with fission. Its not going to happen.

Wow who who a thunk doing fusion experiments would increase the yield of Fusion Weapons we've been using since the 50s wooooow
The US would never do such a thing. The US is sooo behind.

What the Europeans are also in the game now too?!

Inertial confinement fusion has been an idea since the mid 20th century. It was just that we saw the tokamak and stellarator approach as more promising. I think there have been recent developments which make ICF look better than we previously considered but it’s not my field so I don’t know.
Having said that there’s getting to be a serious problem in western countries that people are increasingly unwilling to fund hard research that doesn’t make money if they can’t personally understand it. There’s more and more an anti intellectual culture which starts really young. China doesn’t care about this and just tells morons here’s what we’re doing and smart people are good actually, and that seems to be working great.

>somebody at LLNL: "not to this building" (because security)
>me: "how about the building across the street?"
>"anon, that's the NIF, it's not a building, it's an equipment enclosure"
>somebody at LLNL tries to explain inertial confinement fusion to me
>all I hear is "largest on the planet"
>"ok, so order to main gate?"
The line at Starbucks featured great conversation snippets too. People would talk about
>evaporation rate (how fast are we gonna blow it up?)
>residual material (how much is gonna be left)
