>We're reaching out to let you know that, as announced last year, we have officially begun requiring users who contribute code on GitHub.com to have two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled.>After this date, your access to GitHub.com will be limited until you enroll in 2FA.Why do i need to enable 2fa in order to contribute some code on GitHub?
>>108892522did you read the email? or see literally any tech news recently?
I don't know. I never contribute to other peoples' projects, so I just made my own remote git server and have been using that for al my personal projects.>It was gitlab I switched from, not github; switched from hub ages ago because can't remember why, and switched from lab recently because they also mandated MFA recently>But they already effectively had MFA because their "Remember Me" login button never fucking worked so you always had to get a code sent to your email every time
>>108892522It's part of the global push to end online anonymity.

>>108892522>Why do i need to enable 2fa in order to contribute some code on GitHub?Because people keep getting compromised and then their accounts get used in supply chain attacks. This might not matter for you personally because you're not the one approving pull requests, but you could hypothetically be, or at some point you might start doing so, and they'd rather your account isn't compromised if this happens. Or, hell, you might be trusted enough that your pull requests are approved with very little inspection, and so an attacker could slip malicious code in that way.
>>108892592>or see literally any tech news recently?there aint even any threads about it here except for one thread yesterday that was complain about there not being nay threads hereno one cares
>>108892592kek they want you to get 2fa because they hired the team from clownstrike to manage their security and the guys from ford to manage their uptime
>>108892699hello libcurl dan, i love your work
>>108892699>you might be trusted enough that your pull requests are approved with very little inspectionThat's the problem and 2FA won't solve it.

>>108892522didn't github already do this a while ago?i had to change my password to a bunch of gibberish because of it
