In what Internet era did you start?
I got to see all of it.
Classic era. 2005-2012 should be considered the "middle ages" of the internet
>>108892887classic era i slightly remember the experimental era because of ytmnd but mostly classic era as I am not a zoomer so I wont ever claim shit I wasnt aware of.
>>1088928872007, Classic era
Why can't we go back to the peak?
>>108892887Mid/late 1990s
>>108892887Mid-90s. Geocities, Angelfire, webrings, and so on.
>>1088928872008
>>108892887around 2003 I think
>>108892887Should be like 1970s-1993, 1993-2007, and 2007-present
2009 rage era
before pajeets flooded the internet - era
>>108892887Experimental and Classic should be split to make an intermediate old era. Also, early classic era Mr. Dataminer.
Dank era. Yeah I'm a zoomer but also proud because it's the most creative era.
>>108892935this from academic use through compuserv, prodight to aol etc
2004. Unfortunately just moments after JenniCam shut down. Also Stage6 is better in death then YouTube is now.
>>108892887I was introduced to internet by family's friend in 2004, but parents subscribed to local ISP in 2005. So I experienced turn of experimental and classic era, but more in local services and memes. I'm 1996 and from Poland btw, so I have not experienced Internet like Americans here
>>108892887classic era, fond memories of the newgrounds/youtube output at the time
>>108892887Experimental I guess. I remember when the rules of the internet were becoming a thing. I also hear the damn badger song now.
>>108892887Late Rage/ Early Dank era, I used a cheap dialup in 2009 which I mostly only used for downloading music and anime and for nothing else and I only fully dipped toes in internet culture around 2013-2014.
>>1088928872020 except im unironically a skibidi sigma
>>108892887classic era. born in 92family got dsl 128kbit line in around 2005. upgraded to 256kbit in 2006 and 8mbit in 2007.
>>108892887Post irony ended in 2023 now we're in the Slop Era, that pic needs to be updated.
>>108893506this is the next era
>>108892887Rage era
>>108894035I hope you're 18 or something because getting into the Internet as a late teenager or adult during COVID just means you're a normalfag and should go back to wondering the niggercattle fields outside. 12-13 would also be kinda late to start using the Internet, but still within reason.
>>108893538it was my favorite as well and this is coming from a boomer that started in the classic era
2007 but watched the deeplore
>>108892887Late classic era. Probably the golden age, pre mobile web. By 2012 it already felt boring but some subcultures were still worth it. Honestly 4chan and some forums are still alive today so I can't complain. I think a few more years of AI + ID checks and the internet sloppification will be complete.
>>108894093I think it is brainrot because of the meme lineage idea
>>108892887I'm from the Experimental Era but I think the Rage era was the best
>>108892887the year was 1996.
>>108892887i'm a zoomer so classic era
>>108895761gyatt
>>108892887Shortly before google launched.
>>108893029Anon, you know ball. I have a bunch of his videos archived. He was such a great orator, I love listening to him just ramble about stuff that crosses his mind... Well, I loved. The new TJ sucks ass.
>>108892887kys
>>108892887I started in 1995. My Internet provider used the now obsolete Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP).
>>1088928871990s — the real nigga era.
Qrrbrbirlbel, my guy.
>>108892887>2013>rage eraNobody was still using rage comics in 2013. No not even on facebook.
>>1088928871992
>>108892887the first onei'd started to check out of memes during the "rage era" as you call it. anything past that is unfamiliar to me
why isn't the current era called corporate hellscape era
>>108899620i remember the first time i watched that, specifically because at the end of it it said something like "i just wasted 30 minutes of your life" which made me realise i hadn't disconnected from the internet for the whole movie and wasted 30 minutes of my monthly hours :( none of which makes any sense to someone much younger than me
>>108896082Care to explain why? I am a rage era zoomie but i always hear oldfags talk about that period like the internet had already started going to shit by then.
>>108901684Because things will still get a lot worse. Next big thing is extra large fonts and weird kerning...
>>108901694it was the start of the end, which in some sense means it was also the peak
>>108901694Generally internet commercialized somewhere after 2012. Everything before that was different. You see dating sites these days? Algorithm gives you near matches and dictates visibility, you can't even see all the people. Back then? Just send a message.
>>108892887I don't know if I agree with some of these names but I'll just use them anyway. I started with "Experimental" but I enjoyed internet culture up through the end of "Rage". There were things that I liked here and there after that but overall everything went to shit in the mid 2010s.
>>108901694You could see things starting to turn to shit at that time, but it was still fun. It's not like everything just changed overnight after all. I enjoyed 4chan a lot during that period.
>>108892887>Badger badger badger badgerI hadn't thought about that shit in years and I randomly remembered it and got it stuck in my head at work the other nighthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIyixC9NsLI
i wonder what my parents thought of these if they ever overheard my watching flash movies in the early '00s. i don't recall them ever commenting on them despite watching them mostly on the family computer in the living room with no headphoneshttps://youtu.be/LIzHppRuvKo

>>108892887Pre-95. Bulletin board systems on dial-up.
Flash era was the peak. Its impact it had on everyone and the net is so large it's hard to comprehend it. I feel pity for those that didnt get to experience those days as they were happening, but at least we have archives to look back at
I started using the internet in 2009. I remember creating an email address with '2010' in it because I wanted the email to look new the next year. It was a hotmail and I created it to speak with friends/girls from school in MSN. I was 10 years old and most of the internet usage was in MSN, YouTube, limewire and playing vidya. Good times.
>>108899574you will never be a black person, stop talking like one
>>108892887Split up the experimental era. It's really weird to think of the old HTML anime shrines and vidya fansites hosted on geocities in the same "era" as Newgrounds animations, YTMND, and Homestar Runner but that might just be me. Add a "BBS Era" as well or you'll trigger the geriatrics still pissed about Eternal September lmao
>>108892887This one.
>>108892887My favorite era of the internet was when everyone here was still gay for Bridget and openly salivated over delicious traps, before the burgerstani political regime convinced every lead poisoned boomer to come here just to flaunt their own sexual repression and to shit their pants in fear of fucking pronouns lmaooooooThe 2016 election and its consequences have been a DISASTER for the imageboard race.
>>108903067Agreed but it was already going to shit around the time of gamergate. Even though the mods won't save us from the cancer they mercifully saved us from the attempt at making gamergate 2.0 by banning all the Sweet Baby talk.
>>108892887I started in the classical era but I definitely saw alot of material left over from the Experimental Era. I'm only 27 though, so it was pretty wild. The mid to late dank and early surreal eras were definitely the era I'm least framiliar.
>>108903067i miss when pretending to be gay for a trap was a joke and transvestism was something you only found in the darkest corners of the adult section of a rental store
>>1088928872009, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>108903383>pretending to be gay for a trap was a joke>pretending>was a jokeOh, my sweet summer chud...
>>108892887I've been using a computer since I was 5 years old, so that's the year 2000.I discovered the internet in elementary school, which would have been around late 2002 or early 2003. There was an internet cafe right next to our school, or computer club as we used to call it, and all the boys would go there after classes and play CS 1.5, later 1.6, and Warcraft 3. Honestly I don't remember too much from this era of the internet. We were more focused on playing games instead of "surfing the web", cos we were paying by the hour and every second mattered, and if you were wasting time on sites, you were holding up your mates who are waiting for you in LAN to start the game. But I did see my first boobies in that internet cafe.Honestly I don't even know if I had internet at home in these first few years. I tried and I tried and tried, and couldn't get it to work. I had no idea what I was doing. Then, one fateful day in 2005, something I did finally worked. I had achieved internets! And the landline stopped working... This would be the cause of many a conflict in the following months, between my mom, who wanted to use the phone for work, and 10-year-old me, who wanted to play Robot Rage and RuneScape (shout out Miniclip). This, combined with the exorbitant phone bills, since operators used to charge by the minute, and that included your internet time, would finally prompt my dad to upgrade us to a dedicated, broadband internet connection by the end of the year.>picrel, a different computer club from the same era, except with considerably fewer squeakers than the one I frequented.Anyway, thanks for reading my blog.
>>108892887Around 2011.
>>108892935Fpbp
>>108901684Because you can still post memes.
>>108901684It should be called lolcat reneissance.
>>108892887Stopped caring completely after the Classic Era.
>>108892887i got my pc and net in 2008 but i didnt care much for it, i played games on it but more importantly i played outside with kids. When i think about it, i never really spent much time online, even now all i use internet is for online games and yt. Dont really get these era things, it was always the same, less censored before and no cuckflare but not much has changed.
Dial up internet on AOL disks when I knew mom wouldn't be calling the house
>>1088928872013 and beyond is soulless
>>1089037132004-2009 btw
>>108903440Looking back, we probably had internet the entire time, but my parents kept it well-hidden from me, precisely so I don't jack up the phone bill, lol. And this was back when "family computer" was a thing. Whenever I wasn't playing Diablo II or doing homework, I was watching my dad play Diablo II. At no point did I ever see him browsing a site. Shit, I'll have to call him and ask.>>108903649Until you've had a 5v5 in CS with all your mates in the same room, you have not lived. And I say this as someone who was a skater in 2007 and did play outside.
>>108892887Rage era, but I wasn't into meme culture until the dank era
My first Internet experience was in 1998; I remember finding a forum where people were talking about The Simpsons, and I was shocked at how illiterate and retarded everybody was. I don't know if they were any dumber than what I see nowadays, however.Back then, I didn't really see much point in the Internet. There was nothing there that was even remotely useful that I couldn't get somewhere else more easily. In that respect, it was just like AI is now. I only started staying online with all my free time when I went to university in 2005.
>>108892887>JoecartoonThe internet still hasn't outdone frog in a blender.
>>10889288797, so the first one.
>>108892887I started in 2007 when i was 8 years old, but really got into the meme shit in 2009 - 2011
Early Classic era, but i do remember most stuff from Experimental, it was still around back then.
>>108893029wouldn't you like to know, banana boy
>>108892887experimental according to your image
Everything after the year 2000 is the new era.Around that time Web 2.0 started (non-static content).
>>108892887Rage era, but the internet wasn't yet oversaturated with absolute shit, so parts of the previous two still lingered.
Most of it
>>108892887born 1994, started browsing about 1999found 4chan in 2006all downhill from there really
>>108892887I remember when there was no internet.
My pass is older than people who post here.
>>108892887Early classic/late experimental. I'm a filthy third worlder ESL so when I first got internet access as a kid back in 2001 I was browsing mostly websites and forums about gaming in my native language. I remember first time posting on an english forum in 2007, about Dragon Fable (how the fuck is that shit still going? Holy shit), and that was my first contact with the english internet world. In 2009 I read about 4chan in the same forums and that's how I got here.
It's sad that I have a bit of pride in saying this, as it's completely fucking retarded and pointless, but I am one of the rare elder god tier fgts that has been on this board since its inception. I was on SomethingAwful before it and came over here in 2004 when m00t finally had to start storing his hentai collection online because he shared a computer with his family (working theory at the time). Was online with Windows 95 and AOL dial up. Didn't get my own personal computer that the family didn't use until 2002. Was able to see it all baby. It's glory days and the current lifeless corpse abomination it has become. Nothing is fun anymore and tech is dead. Facebook was the beginning of the end.
>>108892887mid classic, really logged online hard in at the start of dank era, yet managed to avoid all the shit on those pictures until about 2020 because all this time I was actually using the internet for learning shit
>>108892887I was told about 4chan when I was in third grade, in 2008
>>108906940
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV6puTS14Ho
I arrived at 4chan in 2006 after clicking on images from here linked in an anime fansub IRC channel.
>>108892887Experimental... but I spent most of my time on the Japanese side of the Internet (2ch, loaders, WinNy, etc) back then because of a near terminal case of yellow fever.
>>108894093society already became dumb as fuck before slop arrivedI wonder how long it will take to recover from all that shit
>rage era but I feeled like more classic eraricardo was the last good meme.
>>108909237It won't.
>>108892887born in 1990 but dont remember much of classic era, i think i was out biking and touching grass. started living on the puter in the start of classic era. i made a wow character and that was that
>>108909018Are you gay? You know those places are all male right?
>>108909416i dont remember much of experimental era*

>>108909018God that was such a good era I remember I had Counterstrie 0.5 that I then Upgraded to beta 0.6 and then 0.7 and then 0,8 and I had it all on CDs and I insisted it all be installed in sequence like an idiot.
>>108909505
>>108909512
>>108909505I spent all my time on IRC downloading pirated movies, music, software, and occasionally games. I also tried to troll some script kiddie and he ddosed my home connection for like a week. That sucked.
>>108892887somewhere between 2004 and 2005
I remember the time where you could search Limewire for things like 16.jpg and get pictures of women naked and much older than me at the timeAlso turnpike anime wallpapers and AMV’s
>>108909518
>>108909525I should mention that from my misadventures and all the Ls I took I learned things. I'd observe which channel owners had botnets. I knew if I used proxies and pretended to be spamming on behalf of another channel it would lead to that channel getting attacked. So I would be sitting in both channels on my real IP and spamming with shit like Brazillian proxies on port 6855 or whatever. There was so many of them and EFNet's proxy scanners never checked that port. Then I'd watch the chaos unfold.
...Technology?

I started at the tail end of the Classic era. I miss the Surreal era most, the memes themselves kinda sucked for the most part and we were already well into woke, but it felt like the last truly comfy period of life, at least to me.
>>108892887Experimental
>>108892887Classic. It peaked in the Rage Era, became retarded in the dank era and even worse in the surreal era, but it improved a lot post 2020. We're entering a second peak with emerging young zoomers/gen alpha, who are more based than millennials / older zoomers.>>108893029I hated this redditor. I remember this fag. Thank the lord atheism died>>108893506That's the worst part about this era, but it is what it is, there are still circles without jeets/bots, just leave the mainstream and zoom into any niche you want.>>108902809Hell yeah
