It's Out
How so? The spec has been frozen for over a year but nothing is merged into aom master branch.
Not too informed I thought av1 was basically plateauing already and the peak of free open codecs?
>>108898864At transparent bitrates we plateaued way back in 2003 with AVC. All modern innovation is just an exercise in making increasingly bit-starved streams look just barely acceptable, motivated by consumers' baffling demand for arbitrarily-high resolutions.
It took four years for GPUs to support AV1 encoding and it took a long time for CPUs to encode AV1 videos when it first came out because of how slow the reference AOM-AV1 encoder was before Intel and Netflix's much faster SVT-AV1 CPU encoder released a year later, so I don't think the world will be in a big rush to move to it just yet.
AV2 is about to be released and this site still doesn't even support AV1. Disappointing.
>>108898948not really true for >1080p. but primarily because of larger block sizes. a good EVC encoder would be ideal. but no one is working on that, unfortunately.
I am from Finland, working for fakku and i want to sacrifice my firstborn son to Google.
>>108898815I can't imagine the actual compression could be that much better, hopefully there's better decoding performance early on though
>>108899284>I can't imagine the actual compression could be that much betterjudging by how much slower the encoder is (probably >100x), the compression is probably not better at all even with 2-4x more processing. and that's judging with the useless metrics, which is all they optimize for at this stage.
>>108898815HEVC x265 is still better
>>108899473>proprietaryinto the trash it goes
