It's dead.

they should rewrite it in rust. it really needs it bas its slow as fuck (takes 2 seconds just to start up even on good pc). but nooooooooooo the rust trannies have to target ffmpeg with is already perfect
>>

Maybe it should be in Javascript since it's still fast compared to Python and it's also the scripting language browsers use. Idk just shooting from the hip here.

I love that they are refusing to use bun because of ai slop when I've contributed at least two commits using only AI to the project

If the code is constantly updated, then it's not a “stable” branch, you fucking mongoloid.

use nightly if you want updooooots
>>108903878
stable still works fine for my use case (ongoing archival of one channel + occasional random video)
>>
>>108903287
just ask claude to do it and make no mistakes, can be done in 10 minutes.

It's retarded.

current build works perfectly fine. just because it hasn't had an update in 2 months doesn't mean it is "dead". If it works, then it works. also their github repository shows that commits were made as recently as yesterday. you are acting like this shit got nuked off the face of the earth when in reality this was always a rolling project with no real stable branch.

If you absolutely must have updates just use the nightly version
>>
it only gets updated when youtube breaks it

>rewrite in rust
They probably use python because it's widely supported, has plenty of libraries for everything, and everyone already knows how to use it. If a rewrite is a must, then Go is better suited for this.
>(takes 2 seconds just to start up even on good pc)
That's the python interpreter startup time + the loading of all the extractors and their things, I remember being able to halve the time by disabling them. But once it's loaded it's not that bad.

>>108904080
I agree that pointless updates are bad, but in yt-dlp's case, JewTube plays cat-and-mouse with the downloader apps, so they have to make changes in the tool so it keeps working. In this sole case, updates make a lot of sense.

That's all well and good but the current stable (2026.03.17) version still works for downloading youtube videos, so i'm not sure what op is crying about.

It's not yet over but soon to be over at this rate.
