What's the best/fastest way to learn a new language?
Doing leetcode to get a grasp on the basics then doing iteratively harder projects?
>>
>>108905513
It doesnt matter because you'll never put in the work. If you really wanted it, you'd already be coding and not worried about some arbitrary "best way to learn x" strategy.
If someone does tell you an answer you find acceptable, you'll try it for a few days then quit when you get stuck on a basic problem and then go back to making "how to learn x" posts with a pic of Gooky the anime character waiting for someone to "redpill" you on how to learn without doing anything. loser

I'm not a SWE but programming is basically 70% of my job (data related) and I am using LLMs for generating code but also I hate it. it's making me stupid and I'm not learning anything at work but I also get that If I don't use it im gonna fall behind. I use it but I also go do my own research afterwards just because that sense of accomplishment for when you finally got to make something work is important to me. that's what I loved about this field. if I wanted to just coast through things and outsource my thinking I wouldn't have gone to the trouble of studying stem.

but then yesterday when I said this to my friends who are all in tech and senior positions. they all basically said the same thing; don't ever say that in a job interview or even when working at a job. it's a "red flag" not to like and use AI.

has that been your experience too? do I now have to force enthusiasm for this?

Manager told me today that there's a push to port all the ruby code we have to Python because Python is easier to vibe code. I don't prefer one language over the other but that's the worst reason ever to make the switch. In the future I'm planning on breaking into some open source C/C++ programs because 1) doesn't make sense to vibe code in it and 2) any moron can show off the slop he vibed leveling the playing field for anyone who doesn't contribute to existing critical software. I really like my job monkeywrenching in Ruby and Python with 10 tmux splits open but I'm going to be sad if it turns into just prompting Claude, I feel with each day that upskilling is going to be necessary.

>if you take your car to the mechanic and then ask him how he fixed the car, that doesn't mean that you get experience with fixing cars
wrong? and retarded?
you will get some hints of an experience with the specific problem on a specific brand on a specific model year your car was. If you are friends with mechanic he can tell you about how exactly he did it and describe the tools he did it with and processes. Even your retarded analogy is breaking down if you put any effort into questioning
and with AI models you don't even need any normalfaggot skills you'd need with a mechanic friend, just a desire to learn
>>
AI can be a crutch or a fulcrum depending how you use it. You can accept it at face value, producing subpar results and no learning. You can use it as a soundboard to deepen your understanding. No human will provide such quick responses on such a wide range of topics.

I gave up after 2 hours. >>108906020

structure:
>SyncCoordinator is initialized with parameters for the max amount of tasks that can run at once and the rate limiter (tasks/s). sync() is called whenever work is requested.
>sync requests are stored inside of a task. a reference to the task is kept inside of a set, so that the entire sync task can be cancelled from cancelAll() (Cancelling a task also cancels all subtasks / taskgroups inside of it)
>Inside of the task there's a TaskGroup to structure concurrent subtasks (each note upload)
>for each note, add a subtask to the TaskGroup
>each subtask tries to acquire a slot (only X amount of tasks can run at once, depending on how many slots exist), once it acquires a slot it tries to upload the note with 2 retries, once that's done it relinquishes its slot to the next subtask.
>If a subtask can't acquire a slot immediately, it gets put in a queue with a "CheckedContinuation" - which holds off further execution of code until the continuation is resumed. Each time a subtask relinquishes its slot, the next continuation is resumed (enforcing "only X amount of tasks can run at once)
>as subtasks finish, the TaskGroup collects their results and appends it to the correct result array (succeded, failed, cancelled)
>once the entire TaskGroup finishes then the SyncReport is bundled into a struct and sent back

rate limiter (not implemented)
>each time a task tries to acquire a slot, it's logged in a queue.
>look through the queue and clean up any expired entries (more than 1s) ago
>if theres at least X entries within the last second, sleep until the next entry opens, then return the slot

because back then there were few resources online
APIs and SDKs were immature
if you had basic knowledge it already showed that you had interest in tech
AI can write fizzbuzz now and it is trained on all of the SDKs and APIs in existence AND it can explain all of them to you. Thus to show that if you have interest in tech the bar is much much higher, just like your ability to create everything on your own

also there's no native "semaphore" or "rate limiter" implementation. older versions of swift have a native semaphore, but with the new concurrency releases you have to implement them yourself. It's not difficult, you just need to know how to.
>>
>>108907552
I would recommend also to use a Salux scrub pad and scrub the shit out of your pits/ass and you can throw that in the wash just fine. I am allergic to deodorant but i never once stank or even got a complaint about it. Washing your bed sheets weekly helps alot. using baking soda in lieu of detergent makes a big difference but you only need 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of laundry detergent from my experience talking to people who smell they tend to use way more than 2 tablespoons and thus causes odor to stick to clothes. Also never use clothing softener it'll gunk up your washer, and be sure to clean the grate filter and then put it on a clean cycle with baking soda. You shouldn't use vinegar to clean it since it'll fuck up your seals.
>>
>>108907736
>also there's no native "semaphore" or "rate limiter" implementation
the point of the exercise is to see if you understand the concepts enough to implement it yourself in the target language.
i dont use swift, but in Go you can trivially make a "good enough for a live-interview" semaphore with a fixed-size channel

rate limiters come in different shapes, but if you interpret
> no more than 5 requests are made in any given second
to mean
> for all 1-second intervals of time, at most 5 requests are made
then you can hack a rate limiter together with a deque of timestamps. now you might be thinking "b-but my shitlang doesn't have that data structure!" and again the answer is "make it yourself with existing primitives, or pick a better language for the exercise".

Right now it's morning and I haven't slept at all because yesterday I took LSD but zero fucks given because all I have to do today is be awake during standup and mumble some random bullshit that nobody cares about, and if anyone asks details, I'll just say "let's schedule a meeting to discuss this" and we never do.

I’m currently on a 30 day PIP at Splunk (now Cisco). I haven’t signed anything formal yet, but even when I’m actively trying to hit the metrics, it feels like my boss is moving the goalposts or saying certain things “don’t count.”

At this point, I honestly feel like I may be on the verge of being let go as anything I do is not enough or not meeting standards…and I’m trying to understand what that process typically looks like. Would I generally be offered some form of severance in a situation like this after 30 days?

I’ve never been through anything like this before, so any advice or perspective would really help.

Yes but no. The consensus is that AI is worthless except for entertainment. The code it generates is too low quality to pass any kind of peer review and it constantly fucks up, which takes more time to review and fix than it takes to do on your own.
The only people who don't seem to have this experience are jeet-tier nocoders in our collective experience: they are so bad that it makes them a bit faster and the code is only slightly worse than the slop they naturally produce.

It's always how PIPs work. There are only 2 ways you can get PIP'd: 1) someone decided they didn't like you (so you end up in the situation you described) or 2) your name is ranjeet. Whether you get severance depends on the company and the local law. In Canada you would generally get 2 weeks severance once your PIP is up as it's for performance but not for cause. In real countries you'll get either effectively 1 month or 3 months if on garden leave, or be expected to show up during that time as you offboard.

Design an object that dynamically allocates tasks to 30 slaves across 8 plantations and 12 factories, and reallocates further tasks upon early success or failure. Nothing works, and basically I have to setup my own debug lab to figure the whole thing (again), because management wants me to turn shovelware they paid for into a real enterprise tool, so basically I'm secretly bug fixing and adding features that should come from supplier.

I presently work 3 jobs. 2 are full remote. One is part time. I gross about 17k a month. I really should drop one, but the money is good. How long can I keep this up?
>>
>>108905049
Agree or disagree?
>>
>>108908888
I make 12 gross 1 job. So what else could you be doing to progress your career? Besides 2 full remote is fine what is your part time? I wish i was remote.
>>
>>108908899
The trouble is those high-paying jobs are really hard to get. After I got laid off from my silicon valley gig, I just couldn't find the right place to make the same amount of money. Now it's just easier to have two lower paying jobs to make up for one high paying one. My part-time job is a malware reverse engineer for a video game company.
>>
>>108908913
I guess the question is if your part time is in person or remote also. If its part time and pays jack shit with zero in company movement to a higher paying job i would drop it. Its great gig long term if you get higher level certs like GIACP(tons of hard certs)/CEH/CISSP ect but beyond that its a hard ceiling to break into a better paying job due to the saturation.

Correct.
Evolutionary (market) pressures have raised the skill floor for the average zoomer SWE while retarding shitllennial and gen x retards. Your average unemployed Zoomer still looking for a job is a 10x better dev than the average gen x / shitllennial retard coasting by on tokens.
While you're busy playing dnd or whatever shitllennials do in between claude prompts, your zoomer replacement is scanning docs and practicing leetcode hards, waiting for you to get PIP'd so he can start interviewing and steal your job from you. You thought inverting a binary tree was hard (prime example of shitllennial incompetence btw, this was so "oppressively" hard they had to complain about it nonstop on twitte)? He's implementing a heap in 5 minutes.
>>
>>108908913
12 hour days remote would be easy. Going in person working 3 jobs even if its 1 job is way to much and would lead to burnout.

As a homeless person I've finally got a job interview. After 100000 of applications. I FINALLY GOT AN INTERVIEW TOMORROW . I hope all goes well. I'm so tired of being on the streets. I was blessed to wash my outfit for free today and shower for my interview in the am. Will finally be able to put my CS degree into use, I'm happy and nervous. This is just a small step but I'm happy because I'll finally be able to pull myself outta the streets little by little. Yes it will take time but that's all I'm thinking bout right now.
>>
>>108907260
I'd say it depends.
>>
>>108908943
3 month imo is amazingly fast considering most companies you need at least 2-3 months just to go through the interview loop

if you're still unemployed after 6 I'd be a bit more worried because it means you've likely failed multiple interviews already

There is a hard cut-off between people who started professional software development careers without AI for at least two years and those who started with AI. The former can more effectively leverage AI as they at least understand what they want to achieve while the latter can only type text in English and hope that everything works out fine.

>>108908990
Just do it on the side and pay other people to pick up the work for you. Other game dev's outsource through discord or other channels for art/animation/music and they might even get lucky to have a discount if they like your vision like Frank Klepacki does for C&C mods. Infact i suggest playing with Mods first so you can learn the basics like map design, themes, color, environmental story telling. Also Valve included a bunch of game dev diaries in their games that really rounds out the understanding of WHY they did something.

The difference between theoretical knowledge(*) and practical knowledge is much more than "splitting hairs".

(*) Asking someone to explain what they did and you going "uh huh uh huh yeah that makes sense" is bottom of the barrel tier learning. No different than looking up solutions to math problems while practicing for an exam and thinking you know all this because it's "obvious".

the venture capital boom of the late 00s and the 10s drove down standards like you wouldn't believe. the education got worse because all tech companies cared about for so long was a degree and basic social awareness. it was more profitable for schools to just shove normies through with just a couple of techpriest rituals to satisfy the tech-illiterate boomers. this turned into a disaster, a crisis of confidence WORSE than what we're getting with LLM shit. the whole industry is a dumpster fire, and if it's going to survive the corpos who have no technical discipline must die so they stop corrupting basic education with bribes. that's why you have to actually give a fuck and try now

Thailand, the philipines, argentina, chile and costa rica are all also much better destinations than virtually all 1st world countries even as a local. As an outsider with murritard $$$, you'll do even better in any of these countries.

it's very funny for me. this one guy knows nothing and has more years of experience than years I've been alive but any highschooler taking a 1 semester web dev course would be more equipped to be a web dev than him. The new guy has the same amount of experience but has actually learned stuff since 1990 and he wants stuff to be changed and was brought in to change stuff but the other guy is against any change because I assume he thinks he'll get canned because he cant even write a php function or a javascript onclick event without claude lol. and this is my first job out of college ive been here a year I am not getting any sort of experience I can use to get a new job lol. This functions as a gap on my resume where I got paid basically with how irrelevant the work experience is

"If this bitch wants to take control, maybe she should fucking actually do some fucking shit and do the demo herself?"
"Does this shit even matter? God is she so fucking bored of her life that this is the only thing she have that's going? Did her fucking husband not fuck her hard enough? Is she sexually repressed?"

day 2172 working from home

I will review Chinese vocab for another 23 minutes, and on the hour I will mark my slack status to away.

I'll walk over to McDonald's for a coffee. It's supposed to be nice out today.

My unofficial gf was over last night and I didnt get much sleep. Need to stop eating so close to bed time, it's gonna kill me

Woke up and made her lunch this morning. She was very appreciative.

Trying not to goon so I don't become disinterested in her too much.

These days work is chill. Latest gen of llms (gpt5.5, opus 4.7, etc) is not fucking around anymore, and it does the job. I don't get frustrated by it anymore. It made me an entire greenfield project and it's working good.

Yep, this is what 28yo is like...

It's not enough, she gets sore and needs time to recover. I can't just start pounding her either, she hasn't had sex in years.

lmao what the fuck is this supposed to mean? A felony is a felony. Why would someone who works with software and user data hire someone who was convicted with an identify theft felony?

Every kind of office job does some kind of background check. Some are pretty basic, some are pretty extensive (like my field where they even reached my relatives without telling me).
>>
>>108911256

I know you wanted to help but my advice is to do strictly your job. Because if you do something like that add-on, they'll blame you if something breaks. Eventually you'll have users for your application and you don't want that.

Don't know some swift details. Took 10 minutes to draft the initial basic structure in Java. For what position is this?

class SyncCordinator {
int N = 3;
BlockingQueue<Note> reports = new LinkedBlockingQueue<>();
Queue<Future<?>> inFlight = new ArrayDeque<>();
Object monitor = new Object();
AtomicLong started = new AtomicLong();
Semaphore concurrent = new Semaphore(5);
SyncCordinator() {
var executor = Executors.newVirtualThreadPerTaskExecutor();
var dispatcher = Executors.newSingleThreadExecutor();
var rateLimiter = Executors.newSingleThreadExecutor();
dispatcher.submit(() -> {
while (true) {
long l = started.decrementAndGet();
if(l <= 0) { LockSupport.park(monitor);}
Note note = reports.poll();
concurrent.acquire();
Future<?> submit = executor.submit(() -> {
Main.uploadNote(note);
concurrent.release();
});
inFlight.offer(submit);
}
});
rateLimiter.submit(() -> {
while (true) {
LockSupport.parkNanos(1_000_000L);
started.set(5);
monitor.notify();
}
});
}
void sync(List<Note> notes) {
reports.forEach(report -> {
try {
reports.put(report);
} catch (InterruptedException e) {
// cancel working and remaining
}
});
}
void cancellAll() {
// interrupt inflight, drain queue and create report
}
}
