No joke, this is exactly what I have wanted my computer to look like for years. Is there any way to dig up these themes from their ancient tombs? Anything similar in the modern era? Especially the icons, every few months I try making my own svg icons for every app I use and then giving up once I realize how much work it is and how hard it is.

Why are you guys letting desktop threads die? What's the reason? Do you hate desktops that much?
>>108907919
While true, most desktops here looks the same even on Linux
Wayland fags change the color scheme of their retarded stuff and call that a rice, mintfags don't change anything and call that a rice, KDE fags are the same as mint (default KDE looks as shitty as w10/11), or they use windows 7/xp/2k themes... Everything's a copy of a copy of a copy
Not complaining tho, it's hard to come with something unique, I can't do it either, we are all npcs, the only different thing might be the wallpaper and even that can be summarized to either tiled papes, porn papes, nature papes, or no pape at all

Does it really matter if the desktop environment resembles windows or not?
I’ve heard people say gnome sucks and a bunch of addons are needed.
I’m curious about desktop environments that work and aren’t structured like windows just to try something different for a change.

If it doesn’t matter how’s kde and what useless things can I turn off and what settings from it are best to make it look better? Like time and gpu temp measures and playlist?
Can xfce have that without downloading too many addons to future proof the setup?

It was pretty amazing. So, basically my family got a 386 running Windows 1.0 and expected me to show them how to use it because there was a computer in my classroom at school, but the problem was the school computer was an Apple ][e, so I had to teach myself DOS and Windows. When my dad upgraded to a 486, the 386 became mine and I borrowed the disks for Windows 3.11 that came with the 486 to upgrade my computer. Then my father subscribed to "The Microsoft Network", which was at the time basically a newsletter and some software catalogs. Then one day a packet came in the mail with an offer to join the Windows Chicago beta test. So I took all of my allowance savings and paid the $20 for Microsoft to send me the 20+ floppies to install Windows Chicago. Oh, it bears mentioning that by this point it's around 1994 and my father has upgraded to a 90MHz pentium with a CD-ROM drive and the 486 was now mine. So I installed Windows Chicago and then... "This is not a valid win32 application" became the bane of my existence. ALL of the programs I used that were written in 16bit Visual Basic refused to run on Chicago. I contacted the software vendors for 32bit versions and was politely told that I should go ahead and fuck myself because they had no interest in updating their software to 32bit until they saw whether or not Windows Chicago would be a flop or not.

Meanwhile, a friend on IRC told me about this other OS called Linux, and how to send off for installation disks for a version of it called "Slackware" from a company called Walnut Creek. So I did that, and when it arrived I installed slackware and every single package on the extra packages disks. It was something like 75 total 1.44MB floppy disks. So I ran slackware, mostly in tty sessions, but occasionally firing up X11 with fvwm when I wanted a graphical environment. It was amazing, like running DOS and starting win3.11 when i wanted to, only it ran so much faster. 1/2

The thing about Linux then vs Linux now was that there were a lot fewer distros, and with only dialup Internet on a 14.4kbps modem, you picked your distro and that's where you stayed. Another cool thing about Linux back then was that you really didn't have any issue finding a Linux equivalent to the DOS/Windows software you were used to, and on the slackware disks, the only thing I DIDN'T have was a clone of Ski Free. Everything else was there.

Fast forward to 1996, Windows Chicago has been out for a few months as Windows 95, the only software installed on more computers than Win95 was Doom and both KDE and Gnome hit the Linux scene. I tried both, and they really weren't much different from each other (seriously, look up a screenshot of gnome 0.33 and compare it to picrel, kde 1.0) so I decided to go with kde since I liked its logo better than the gnome footprint. It was like Windows 95 on fucking steroids. It did everything Win95 did, and it did it better and faster. I truly thought Linux was going to be the next big thing. Pretty much any Windows software you wanted, there was a Linux version and it looked better, ran better, and rarely if ever did it crash. But of course, Microsoft had their contracts with PC OEMs and had them over the barrel because anyone who wanted to offer a PC with Linux instead of Windows was told that if they did that, NONE of their PCs could ship with Windows. So of course they took it up the ass from M$ and Linux never quite got its time to shine. Then more and more software came out as more people bought computers and the divide widened every year until you get what we have today where YOTLD is pretty much a pipe dream. Even with Linux gaming stomping a mud hole in windows and walking it dry, there just isn't the comparable software options like there used to be

>voluntairly choosing corporate branding is stockholm syndrome
didn't fucking know recreating the mere layout of windows, which is something desktop environments have done for ages, including gnome before it shat itself since version 3 and only went downhill since, modern kde and cinnamon, both of which do so to this day, finishing off the example list with the more obscure budgie de, not to mention entire distros that ship windows and mac layouts by default like zorin os. i haven't even touched on the fact that certain desktop environments like tde (a fork of old kde, specifically kde 3) and even the oh-so praised xfce include themes (if not, window borders) that resemble or even emulate the windows or mac aesthetic.

It was the cover of Fellowship of the Ring in those years. I should still have books having those covers around somewhere. Great cover art.

>Can't you just use everything that LXQt runs with Fluxbox?
It depends. When I ran Fluxbox it was under lxqt-session. But certain components have to be excluded, some things you have to hack into working and then there will still be some apps missing.
Turning Fluxbox into a standalone desktop environment would be an entire project on it's own.

No problem! Glad you guys enjoyed it. I've been the resident old guy 'normie' for a long time, married, homeowner, etc and just kind of fell into using Linux early on because of the win95 beta fucking me over and just never bothered to go back to Windows. I've had to use it for work because the medical software I use in my career doesn't work on Linux, even via WINE because it's got embedded hardware drivers for specialized medical hardware and the hardware won't respond when the software is running in WINE, so I have gotten to watch Windows progress over the years and at the end of every day I can't wait to turn off my workstation and go home to my Linux machines.

108909250 here, i got my laptop in late 2021, its components come from either 2019 or 2020, to this day it serves me well, much better than the dell shitspiron i used to have. i personally couldn't be happier with the laptop i have, even if it isn't particularly high-end, as it is a mid-range gaming laptop.

luna nights is really fun. fumo posting finally got me to look the games up on steam and i finally bought 2 of them (one was a chinese fan game and i didn't realize it until after i bought it). ones a bullet hell the other is a 2d side scroller. as games they are fun. irl i want to shag cirno. i just really want nemlei to drop something on the first of june. i'm antsy, bro.
>>
>>108925601
I was wondering WTF he was talking about when it comes to your post, because I've got a gaming laptop that was brand new in 2018 that's got a GTX 1070 that I use as a media server, so there's no way yours with a 1650ti is old enough to have been obsolete 15 years ago. Your GPU didn't even come out until 2020.
>>
>>108925671

>i just really want nemlei to drop something on the first of june. i'm antsy, bro.
i just hope nemlei doesn't fuck it up, i'm starting to dislike the recent decisions from the april fools update
>>
>>108925689
what has been shown up to this poiunt hasn't led me to feel that way but i certainly do not like the decision to develop all routes at once. i can understand where it is coming from. if it continues at this pace it may lose steam, momentum and relevance.. but i do feel in my heart i'd prefer it to keep going slow and steady. i just wish she would talk about it more. when she stopped foing those first of the month updates i was so let down. those made my month. even if they were short and sweet that would be enough for me. i haven't cared about a game in active development for a long time. this game is lightning in a bottle. i just hope it turns out well.

it's mostly me being pissed off about the additions on the already released chapters, i guess it's nemlei's disdain for all of us, you can tell by the interaction with "fucking idiot" (which i believe is a representation of the game's community) being more in-your-face as well as a common theory of the game's events being set in the 90s or 00s essentially being retconned by ashley's now-revealed birthdate. it came across as "fix what wasn't broken" to not just me but to the /vg/calg/ folks as well, all purely out of spite, it's not like nemlei hasn't alluded to her spite for all of us anyway in her posts either.
>>
>>108925831 (cont.)
all in all, it's not like my hype for burial has faded altogether, i came to really like the cliffhanger route of d3cay, i sincerely believe burial will be on par, though i do not blame nemlei if she indulges in further spite by making burial intentionally terrible, after all if i had a community as terrible the coffin community and was doxxed by denizens of this site or some other chan-like imageboard i'd hate the ever living shit out of the community as well and would definitely want my curse to be lifted as soon as possible
>>
>>108925831
i noticed the changes. in chapter one i knew i didn't remember there being a "press a button to call mom back" included in the orignal release. i've put something like 20 hours into the game but i haven't fleshed out all the routes. i'm stubborn. i'm waiting for mine to be continued. i thought she had already confirmed the game takes place before the turn of the millenium. when was ashley born?
>>
>>108925857
i really hope she makes it what it deserves to be and doesn't lose her fire. i truly love this game. up there with deus ex for me.
>>
>>108925859

according to the recent additions in chapter 2, september 21st of 199x (last number obscured).

>>108925871
in itself the game is very good story-wise, though gameplay-wise it's eh, it's a great pick for those who play games primarily for the lore, it is one of the few games that made me feel incredibly emotional, that alone is a sign of great writing.
>>
>>108925896
she is an incredible writer. gameplay is not what sells the game. it's wholly the storytelling. the puzzling complements the story abstractly. it is in essence an on rails choose your own adventure walking simulator, but that label doesn't do the game justice as to it's quality.
>>
>>108925906
>she is an incredible writer
She's great. I wonder if that's also due to her being a normal married woman and not a lonely blue haired freak like most women who make or write videogames.
>>
>>108925890
that means at earliest the game takes place in after september 2010 (when 1990 leyley recently turned 20) or at the very latest the game takes place before september 2020 (moments before 1999 leyley turns 21)

You know adults play video games, right? The primary sales demographic is 30-40 year olds. They're buying and playing more games than any other age range. The majority of gamers use Windows and purchase their games via Steam. There's nearly a billion PC gamers globally so approximately 1 out of every 8 people will be a PC gamer. And most of them will be 30-40 years of age.

In short, get fucked you snobby cunt. You're not better than anyone else just because you don't know how to have fun.
