keksus maximus, that makes my uninterest in DSP emulations of JP8000/JP8080 even more valid than for some other synths that run at a lower sample rate with more aliasing. it literally says "no magic". the magic is in the hardware and not just the algorithms. if you take an honest look at things, the DSP emulation plugins aren't massively popular, they get some initial hype around the time of release piggybacking off of the popularity of the hardware and youtubers can make some low-effort content by downloading and playing with the software. the plugins don't get long-term widespread adoption by successful producers and the hardware synths don't plummet in value any more than general market trends.

After studying Serban Ghenea’s mixes extensively over the past two decades, I finally figured out exactly what he uses to achieve his modern sound ITB

Magic. I mean like actual, literal magic. No special plugins or workflow, just actual magic inside of him.

His mixes until about 15 years ago were pretty achievable by most any skilled engineer with 10~20 years experience, but sometime after that, his mixes started getting more and more transparent, crisp, forward but not harsh, thin yet full, and translating on the shittiest of shit speakers.

Not sure exactly where the transition happened, but somewhere along the line, he literally connected with the essence of sound and music itself, giving him the ability to wield its awesome power.

No matter how good you are, you won’t be able to mix like Serban Ghenea, unless you have that very specific flavor of magic within you.

If you listen to his non-straight-pop mixes, you can hear that his interpretation is not always the most appropriate for the vibe. He can’t do everything. But for pop? One reason why it’s so good, is that he is personally responsible for pioneering a certain sound. His mixes from 20+ years ago show his humble beginnings. Point is that he crafted his own vision of what pop could sound like, and that’s what we’re hearing.

We’re not hearing “his mixes”- we’re hearing his vision. We’re hearing his connection with sound and music. We’re hearing his magic.

now the justification for using JP8000 and romplers like JV1080 is for the sonic footprint of the analog signal path of the original hardware
