The current situation is much worse that during Thailand floods or dotcom crash, because companies seemingly want to deprive people from owning any personal storage. They don't even have to shut down sites at this point. All manufacturers already sold out their entire manufacturing capacity, even small 1-2TB drives are ridiculously expensive (they will probably stop producing anything that is smaller than 20-30TB to reduce costs and production). In order to keep piracy and torrenting alive people need lots of hard drives not to mention backups, the reason why you can still easily download anything is because someone is running his computer with his hard drives 24/7 which will inevitably fail sooner or later. Some drives might last 15 years these are already old and worn drives, modern drives are not as reliable. I personally seed over 2000 torrents 24/7 but if my current drive fails I will not be able to afford any replacement and I will have to shut down my pc and go offline to preserve my cold backups until the situation improves which is unlikely at this point.
