I find it funny how "muh climate change" has disappeared since data centers started popping up.
>>108919213> Datacenters run closed loops, the water usage is minimal. No, they do not run closed loops. They use evaporative cooling. There may be closed loops to move heat from the machines to the evaporative cooler, but to expel heat from the datacenter facility into the surrounding environment, they evaporate massive quantities of water.
>>108918458If they could run on saltwater, that would stop them stealing potable water from living beings that need it, but they'd also happily drain every ocean on the planet to build even more datacenters for the palantir ctOS surveillance state.
>>108918712My employer disagrees
>>108919329where does the evaporated water go?
>>108919558Water treatment plants only have so much capacity. The water cycle is a long and slow process, and the water does not necessarily end up back in the same place it started. If you use all of the available freshwater in an area today, don't be surprised when people do not accept "but if you just wait some number of weeks, months, or years, it will rain again" as a solution, when they needed to drink that water tomorrow.
>>108918458Because that would spread disease everywhere or at the very least smell really bad.
>>108918487spbp /threadLine goes up means world more gooder :^)
>>108919329>They use evaporative cooling.Evaporative cooling is antiquated.Nobody building now is using it as it's more maintenance intensive and cooling capacity is directly variable with the local environment.Chillers are everywhere now which run off the refrigeration cycle.
A lot of times it's not dirty water they're afraid of being pumped out, it's hot water which has an effect of the surrounding environment like creating algae blooms or killing local wildlife.
>>108919377They can easily use salt water if they're located near the sea/ocean.Many (nuclear) power plants are and use salt water for cooling, even using the heat to turn salt water into fresh water. But tech CEO's prefer to build data centers in deserts where land is cheaper.
>>108919623So where do the water consumption numbers come from? They are all fake and made up?>With good water quality, roughly 80% of water withdrawal is evaporatedhttps://arxiv.org/pdf/2304.03271Is this totally irrelevant and now by 2026 we basically use no water at all in those datacenters? idk buddy sounds fishy
>>108919641>They can easily use salt water if they're located near the sea/ocean.Well, they can also solve world hunger, but its not profitable to do so, so they don't., running on salt water is expensive so no one does it since there's no law forcing them to do it, it's just cheaper to ruin the environment.
>>108919623You either don't know what you're talking about or are lying. Nearly 100% of data centers use evaporative cooling because it is the most efficient and cheapest form of heat rejection.> cooling capacity is directly variable with the local environmentThis is always true for literally all cooling systems, by definition of how heat works.> Chillers are everywhere now which run off the refrigeration cycle.Actually, these are rarely used because they are expensive to run, even more dependent on the state of the local environment than evaporative cooling is, and operate on the cube law (doubling the cooling requires eight times the power input). There may be some specific locations where dry chillers are used instead of evaporative coolers, because the environment is just right for them, but in general, data centers use evaporative cooling in 2026 because it is the cheapest and most effective method.
>>108919623>which run off the refrigeration cycle.....which uses evaporative cooling. It's very simple: you have to get rid of heat somehow. You can dump heat in the ocean or in a lake or river. But if that's not possible you have to dump it into the air and then evaporation is by far the cheapest and most efficient way.
my pee is hot
>>108919670>running on salt water is expensiveNo it's the cheapest method of cooling.Just needs a heat exchanger between the closed loop and the infinite supply of cool ocean water.Evaporative cooling requires cooling towers and usually water that, unlike ocean water, isn't free.

>>108918488>Data centers don't pollutejeets work there
>>108918458The main reason is because of pipe clogging and abrasion and metal fatigue when the highly acidic, detritus filled water comes into repeated contact with the surface of the heat exchangers. Also infestation of bacteria and stuff. You need relatively clean water at least. Even ocean water is kind of a nono for direct evaporative cooling. And it should be remembered evaporative cooling is the norm for the highly chip dense and energy intense ai datacenters being pushed, because the heat dissipation is too much for a closed loop design to reasonably handle at once. Which should be considered.Anybody saying that this is not happening is probably thinking of other forms of data centers, which have gotten pretty power efficient by now. Could you make a less demanding AI datacenter? Sure. But for the request capacities that companies want to make their llm services economically viable, they kind of have to be extremely mega super demanding, and that's not such a great idea considering the limitations of local water sources, or even if the cost of oil goes up. They'll go broke from the utilities costs, and the people living in those towns will be left holding the bag. If it wasn't a practical issue, then people wouldn't already be getting notices about their local utility companies deciding to no longer service them. But they are. So.... :/

>>108918458>Why can’t datacenters just be cooled with toilet water or piss or sewage or whatever?you could do that but it's expensive. ideally what you'd want to do is build such a data center near a supply of sea water, build a small desal water plant. unlimited fresh pure water and the brine waste product can also be used for cooling instead of most of it being pumped back out to sea or into some evaporation pond.
