I’m probably the smartest Steam Controller user alive, yet I still have this horrible realization: did I really pay $75 just to get laptop touchpads on the left and right side of a controller instead of buying an Xbox controller for $20?
>>108925563I like the steam controller cause of the layout. The stick next to the d-pad is so incredibly comfy for me for menuing. I disable the trackpads for most games too but I can use the trackpads to browse youtube on a second monitor without ever leaning forward to use my mk+b
>>108925563>instead of buying a Chinese controller with TMR sticksftfySpending more thaa $1 on a controller with potentiometer sticks is retarded
testing
>>108925563lol what a cuckmicrosoft nailed it with the xbox 360 controller and everything released after has been a sidegrade
Why the fuck would I buy an xbox controller when I can have something that doesn't drift after 6 months
the xbox controller doesn't scream when i accidentally chuck it across the room mid tripif you regret it that much throw it on ebay for $75 then faggot, otherwise delete this worthless thread.
>>108925648TPBP.
>>108925563how does this controller deal with falls? i somehow drop my controllers a lot but the ones i had (8bitdo SN30 and PS5) manage with it
>>108925675>how does this controller deal with falls? It screams.
>>108925563>$75you mean $100 (excl. tax)>instead of buying an Xbox controller for $20buy anything that isn't a traditional potentiometer unless you want to have stick drift, hall effect and TMR arent issue-proof cus they stilll have parts that fail like the centering spring but those long outlive the avg. potentiometer (a couple of months of regular use)i still think most faggots are retarded for buying the steam controller unless you use all the features and care about repairability
>>108925675How are you dropping your controllers a lot? Are you a crab? Are you Jack Nicholson?
>>108925563is it annoying to play non-steam games?
>>108925874It's annoying until next monday At first it worked well with SDL applications outside of steam but it took a shit with a new firmware update. To quote Valve:"The FW update switched to using the same input report as is used over BLE, which unfortunately wasn't included in the SDL release at the beginning of May. The current latest SDL in the tree does include support, so either you can cherry pick 2e7bd89 or it will be in the June 1st update."And then there's software that could make it work as a basic xinput controller I guess.Games through steam that are non-steam work fine, just as an emulated controller
>>108925899thanks anon
Shill me a chink controller with decent sticks /g/Bonus points if it's usb and not bluetooth
>>108925942What is bluetooth that isn't USB?You mean like wired only?
>>108925648>remove pots>install Hall effect sticks>calibrate with DriftguardNo more drift.
>>108925962That's even worse, you're paying even more and have to do it all yourselfMicrosoft is not going to accept your shit if you have any other problems
>>108925951Yes
>>108925973What? Why would I want Microsoft to have my controllers? It's a cheap upgrade that will make it last forever unless you're a Cheeto cheese fingered clumsy slob.
>>108925990Stadia controllers are cheap and feel decent. Just don't use the BT.

You got big hands
>>108926014Show them.
>>108926021You think I'm just making shit up to one-up you on a well known problem? Why?
>>108925962a (good) soldering iron is already more expensive than the steam controller
>>108926032I just want you to show how durable they are, that's allAlso hang the fuck on. You're telling people to go buy 360 controllers? Those have possibly the worst d-pad in a controller in like 4 fucking console generations.I'd pay 20 bucks just to avoid being subjected to that shit jesus
>>108926039If your hobby revolves around electronics, then you should have at least a basic toolset. You don't need a $300 vacuum desoldering pump either. A large solder sucker works just fine.>>108926047How can I show you their durability? Are you mentally impaired? The recalibration values are stored on the chip in the controller, and I never use the d-pad. lmao
>>108926016For you.
>>108926064im interested in this anon if you could give me some recommendations please.
>>108926077What are you asking about specifically?
>>108926064There's a thing called wear
>>108926093>wearYeah. It happens to all matter in the universe. No controller gets out alive.
>>108926087i have a broken xbox series s (1904 model) controller but i have no clue how to solder etc. i looked at the ifixit thing but idk what tools to use and rather not listen to fags on reddit but my budget isnt bigim just interested in fixing it and if you could recomend tools id appreciate it if this could prevent me from spending money on another controler
>>108926114>(1904 model)i meant 1914
>>108926114The biggest expense is the soldering iron. The two philosophies are:1. Buy a cheap piece of shit because it's affordable. It doesn't work well and you'll buy it again in 6 months when it stops working.or2. Spend money on decent tools that work right. So get a Hakko FX-888D or a Weller WE1010NA. Use good solder and flux (Kester, MG Chemicals, GC Electronics, etc.), desoldering wick/braid, and a Soldapullt (large version). Watch some jewtube videos demonstrating the use of a sucker, and practice on junk first.PRO TIP: Keep the solder sucker clean by emptying it periodically, and don't dump flux everywhere.
>>108926149and use a chisel tip, not conical. Beginner's mistake! Alss, the iron is only used to heat solder joints. Don't scrape, pry, or use it in any other retarded way. Keep the tip clean and load it with a blob of fresh solder when you're finished, to protect the tip from oxidiation and extend it's life by years.
>>108926156alright, thanks anon
>>108925563>buying a cunt roller when keyboards and mice existyou are pretty dumb, yes.
>>108926225yw, good luck!
>>108926003>using contact pads like an 1980s TV remoteWhat do you mean?
>>108925563Been playing Forza 6 and Silksong, feels great.Trackpads are more than a gimmick, they feel amazing and what really gets me is the haptic feedback + customizability. You can do anything on this thing. I had a Series 2 Elite for 5 years but the rubber has been coming off the sides and the L button keeps getting stuck. I really enjoy the Steam Controller.
>>108926047>Those have possibly the worst d-pad in a controller in like 4 fucking console generations.I like this revision.
>>108926432
>>108926805That's a flex board and a good number of controllers have this, like the dualsense
>>108925583it DOES have TMR sticks though
The few people that actually got one are still in the honeymoon phase with theirs. I bought the og steam controller on release and it was the same story. There's a reason very few people stick with it.I think this one will have more longetivity because it has two sticks but very few people are going to really finetune a game profile to work with the touchpads and capacitive sensors. You'll spend an hour tuning things then forget all your chords and macros the next time you play the game. Their entire sales pitch is built on the """potential""" it has with steam input but the last steam controller really showed how uncreative most people are.
>>108928295You're forgetting 4 years of deck layouts that are fully compatible with the controller
>>108928327What does that have to do with anything? My point still stands, you download a community profile bursting at the seams with features and you either don't use them or forget them all next time you pickup the game. The mass majority of custom profiles have one or two custom bindings. Like back buttons or joystick emulation on one of the pads. Because people get tired of finetuning the feel to get it right. Personally I got tired of navigating 50 similar looking settings pages and working out which page has vibration ramp curves or whatever. For most games I just set it to ps4 or 360 controller mode and worked with what I had until I got a 3rd party controller with better triggers. Maybe if there were quick edit menus for touchpad button grids I would use it more.If you're in the 5% that actually customize the shit out of the controller that's fine, but I guarantee you the mass majority of people that bought one are going to use it like a couch mouse and keep it at the default profile for each game.
>>108925563snoy invented the best controller like 30 years ago
>>108928462Hard to argue with that.
>>108928413So far I already play 4 games with community made layouts that have full gyro/trackpad keys working. People had enough time to experiment a lot on the deck to add all sorts of shit like radial menus with custom icons and such. What you're talking about is the default templates.

>>108925899>"The FW update switched to using the same input report as is used over BLE, which unfortunately wasn't included in the SDL release at the beginning of May. The current latest SDL in the tree does include support, so either you can cherry pick 2e7bd89 or it will be in the June 1st updateso that's why my controller suddenly stopped working with RPCS3. Thought I was going crazy because I definitely remember it working earlier in the week and then I get to actually playing a game Saturday night and suddenly it doesn't workjust a matter of time until the fix at least
>>108930299what do you use instead ds4? its okay for me
>>108930529I thought it was a permanent thing in need of another firmware update. I reverted back from steam beta to stable, got a firmware update that was older which worked, then next day I mistakenly updated the thing again because I'm very stupid. But that also means it can be downgraded
>>108932187I suffer with the DS3 because I like it too much. I also have a DualSense that's comfy but a bit too heavy.
>>108925874Depends if they have launcher or not, if they don't then it's easy, but if they do then it can be annoying sometimes
>>108925563School funded a free laptop, already had a decent x86 lenovo so got a macbook air. I have not touched my lenovo for serious work since. Even with a custom hyprland setup, a primary desktop on arch and degoogled phone. The battery life on it alone is enough to make it miles better than any other laptop. It can even do light games for a few hours without killing itself on a blanket cause no fans.
>>108925563I really like the steam controller but the seam on the right side doesn't quite line up on my unit, leaving a rough edge, I opened it up and reseated everything and it's still there. Knowing this is an issue it shipped with pisses me off.

>>108932561Like I said, if electronics is your hobby then you should own the right tools to fix and modify stuff. In my case, 3 controllers were given to me as payment for another repair, and I already owned the tools and consumables. You could pay the cost in a day if you tried. Pretty retarded, huh?
the amount of forced hate valve gets right now feels super organic btw. hope the pay is good
>>108932957Not hating on valve myself but they don't exactly make it difficult as of late
>>108928295the og controller couldnt replace an xbox controller due to the missing thumbstickthis 2nd revision controller does at least achieve that minimum bar of functionalityim still skeptical its a good replacement for xbox controllers thoughbeit
>>108933201what did they do except for raise prices?
>>108933225Honestly half the shit they do is something related to economics. Realistically no one other than angry moms gives a fuck about a bunch of losers spending thousands of dollars on loot boxes. Realistically the steam controller price is absolutely nothing to write home about given the prices of current first party controllers. And realistically, most people who actually wanted an OLED deck already bought one when it wasn't as expensive.
All controllers are dumb. At least this one has trackpads. Not that that's enough to get me to buy one.
>>108933225Having inconsistent rulings for game approval and refunds.
>>108933352game approvals sure, i've heard of that karen that works there who likes rejecting anime games and stuff. what about the refunds is inconsistent? i've never had an issue refunding a game as long as i hadn't played for more than 2 hours or owned it for more than 14 days or whatever the limit is
>>108933532Honestly it's inconsistent the other way around, you can actually refund some games after 2 hours of gameplay, they just don't tell you.
I wish 4chan owner a very pleasant death
See? They listen
>>108925563ps1 was perfect. thumbsticks and touchpads are for those weak of mind and finger.
>>108925563>instead of buying an Xbox controller for $20there is no $20 Xbox controller
>>108932562How does anyone still fuck up a Dpad this day and age. Nintendo perfected it in the fucking 80s. Now it's regression with ghost inputs and diagonals.
>>108935627According to most controller reviews, everyone fucks up the d-pad, and no one ever gets it right. So, it's not so much "anyone" as much as it is "everyone".
>smartest Steam Controller user alive
>>108935645There's a matter of subjectivity with d-pads
>>108925563>smartest Steam Controller userthat would be me. and after fucking with third party chinkshit controllers for the better part of a decade i decided it was better to spend more for a controller with every feature i care about and works perfectly with steam input out of the box.
This whole totally organic marketing craze made me buy Vader 4 and I am very happy with it.
>>108925675When you drop it while in Big Picture Mode it literally does the Wilhelm scream.
>>108935720Actually the PS Vita has an objectively perfect D-pad: It's comfortable, fast and responsive, tactile, and just a little bit clicky; making it easy to perform diagonals (but only if you actually intended to input a diagonal). Even fighting game players like it.The GameBoy Advance SP is pretty good too, so it's clear that you the trick with designing a D-pad is to use buckling dome contacts with a relatively low N/mm^2 actuation force, and to make the lever-arms as flat as possible. But no one does this- well except 8bitdo, who seems to have recently cottoned onto it with their Pro 3 (don't buy one though, it has some other very glaring issues, but maybe they'll fix those for next time).
i have a gamesir controller and it's okay but the name rubs me the wrong way. might need to paint over the logo.
>>108933204the 2nd revision achieves the minimum from a few years ago. Now even cheap chink controllers have dual stage triggers and microswitches. In two years the steam controller is going to feel rough compared to the chink knockoffs, it'll be even worse if someone makes a touchpad controller to compete with valve for half the price.
>>108933225the moment they changed the CS economy they created such a big shitshow that if I was a bank who gave their image before "AAA" I would reduce it to "AA". Sure they did a lot of good other stuff and there is a reason that other companies are literally "C", "D", or "F", but the CS economy changes started the down spiral. Other changes that they have made and their general bad support of TF2 and HL3, also can reduce it, but the Steam Controller being 100 euro is another reason to go down. for me they are close to "A", but above it. If they price the Steam Box incorrectly, they go straight to "B", which is still better than most modern game companies, but still shit. If I go back in time, I would argue that Blizzard was "B" like 10 years ago and Bethesda was "B" like 10 years ago too. The sad thing about Valve is that their messup really do rank them next to the other failed modern game companies. Should they price the Steam Box and Frame right, they may stay in the "A" spot, so there is hope.
>>108937821i just love that people expect valve to sell hardware at a loss for some reason while being okay with $1000 ps5s (with a monthly subscription fee to play your $80 games). fascinating phenomenon
>>108937891ok, but after the CS skin fiasco their image has really gone down. Defend them all you want, but if they mess up again, they are open to so many attacks it will be just hard to no-life defend them 24/7 online. And we have seen this before: they are not the first big company who has been in this place: Blizzard too had armies of tryhard 24/7 defenders online - this defence just does not last
>>108937927>>108937891they also are in bad position of being attacked from the jews - being attacked online and from organized groups with money is just a fight that cannot be sustained. The sad truth is that... they need to sell the hardware for as little profit as possible. Otherwise they are out of the hardware business.
Chinkshit is the best option.
>>108937927i'm not defending them, i just think it's retarded to sperg out 24/7 about them raising prices when the entire industry has collapsed with no winners except for nvidia (and trump's family raking in billions from all the corruption). don't let me stop you though, keep being outraged on /g/ if that makes you happy
>>108925563I can use it one handed
im not in the US but will be there next week and it'll allow me to use Steam account locally, how's the stock situation atm? is staying +-10 days gonna be enough? i read some weird thing about "preordering a chance to order"
>>108925563You paid for high quality gyro, grip sensors, and 4 grip buttons.
>>108925563>xbox controller $20Where?
I'm having an issue with touch menus on action set layers. I'm trying to have a set up where I can hold L4 or L5 to hold one of two action set layers, one for each touch menu, that replace the right trackpad with that touch menu. The right trackpad is normally set to mouse. My controller makes the beep but my issue is that it's seemingly not switching or at least the touch menu isn't visible. How fix pls?
>>108925563Just remember they're portals to gabe newels nipples, and you can't buy that anywhere else
>>108941783Ok, so, as it turns out, I'm a fucking retard and Valve are a bunch of faggots who think it's funny to randomly swap menu items to make them harder to find for fucking retards like me.For SOME FUCKING REASON, the trackpad order is swapped in the menu if you're looking at a new action set layer compared to the default action set. I was unwittingly setting the touch menus to the left pad, which was in the same position as the right pad in the default view, and only trying the right pad in game. The order is of course fixed after you fall for this hilarious prank, figure it out, and set the touch menu to the correct pad.
>>108925563Just sell it for $200 on Ebay then.
