what software would you guys recommend for my actual low end laptop? sold 2012, intel corporation celeron/pentium silver processor, no gpu, 4GB ram
i guess you could use it as a digital typewriter sort of thing, ive been seeing some basedboys do that.probably windows xp with office '07, honestly. its not going to have enough juice for much else, even a barebones modern linux will drag on it.
>>108935456"lightweight modern Linux for old PCs" is no longer a thing, it was killed by trannies, so don't even bother with redditors recommending that. Only thing you can do is use Windows versions of that era, old Linux stable releases would work also but not only is running unsupported distros a horrible experience, there's also not the same community willing to keep it alive like with Windows versions people are nostalgic for. That's your best bet for being able to use it as more than a digital typewriter. You could also try using some niche OS's like Haiku but at that point you'd just be messing around.
>>108935456I run Linux Mint on a 2009 era Core 2 duo based Dell latitude that has 4 gb of ram and a 256GB SATA SSD. It’s great. YouTube is a little slow. But otherwise very usable machine.
>>108935472>digital typewriter sort of thingwhat does this mean? also i should probably add i hope to use it for some dev work and for an on the go do whatever>windows xp with office '07what about security risks? also funny enough when i got it it was running windows 10 and could barely do anything lol. i dont know much about xp, oldest windows version i used for actually using is 8.1 because it was the newest windows at the time>even a barebones modern linux will drag on itwhat about these lightweight distros i keep hearing about? i dont mind learning stuff about them if it makes my pc good.>>108935649>is no longer a thingi would like to give it a try anyway and see what works for me but i'll keep this in mind>old Linux stable releasesi do not want to try this though>messing aroundhonestly im not gonna do much else with it than dev and mess around so maybe this isnt a bad thing.>>108935669i suppose i will keep mint in mind as a last resortBTW if linux what WM, web browser?
>>108935456>>108935747buy used DDR3 sodimm on ebay or aliexpress so you have at least 8GB (16GB if you really want to use this laptop seriously), then install LTSC 2021, or LTSB 2015 if the software you need is compatible since that version is supposedly faster on HDDs
nothing can be done with these machines at all. even text editing is painfully slow on it. if you are DESPERATE for a computer i recommend a panasonic lets note, macbook neo, or an aliexpress mini-PC.
>>108935747>some dev workDepending on what kind of development you do it's going to range from impractical to unusable, that is unless you're doing something where you deliberately use old development ways for whatever reason.>what about security risks?Security risks are mostly a nothingburger unless you use public networks, if you do, don't. When I talked about "community willing to keep it alive" (I'm >>108935649) I meant people patching security issues or software like Mypal, which is a browser specifically for older Windows that's also updated. But I think the other anon meant it in relation to the "digital typewriter" statement, in which case he probably meant you would just keep it airgapped from any network.>what about these lightweight distros i keep hearing about? >i would like to give it a try anyway and see what works for me but i'll keep this in mindIf you're willing to go really lightweight, like Puppy Linux lightweight, it will work and run, but those are really not a good experience to use for anything more than light web browsing and some really basic office work, and anything beyond that isn't that much different from just using a regular distro like Mint.TL;dr if you need safety on public wifis and such, try lightweight Linux, if not, try older Windows versions or IoT releases like the other anon mentioned, it'd also be nice if you elaborated more on what you want to do with it
>>108935649>it was killed by tranniescare to explain or did the voices in your head tell you that?
>>108935747>BTW if linux what WM, web browser?MATE and Mozilla Firefox. Mozilla is the only org supporting deprecated OS’s. I’m still getting Firefox security updates for my old ass unsupported Macs
>>108936276YouWillNeverBeA WomanAnd you are ugly as fuck.More ugly than the ugliest biological woman.I have two very beautiful daughters and it would be a better world for them if you just KYS
throw it into the garbage and get a MacBook
>>108935649>>108936276I'm not the lefty fag "you're schizo" poster but I'm also interested in knowing why lightweight modern Linux for old PCs isn't a thing anymore
>>108935456wdym no gpu?
>>108935649windows 7 with the classic theme should work fine, install supermium and vxkex, notepad++ vlc and aimp3
>>108936432even a minimal gentoo install is sluggish as shit on older low end stuff, I tried it recently and was surprised at how bad its gotten
>>108936432modern linux is bloated just like modern windows, devs don't care because they are updatrannies or securitards
>>108936457But why? What are they bloating it with?
>>108936469One thing I noticed is that the it will aggressively swap for no reason even when there's plenty of free RAM that's only being used for disk caching.
>>108936486*that it
>>108936465>updatranniesanother made up word the voices in your head taught you?
>>108936494it is made up to annoy that kind of people, and maybe change their mind in the long term. updating is a trap
>>108936486Doesn't sound like a minimal Gentoo install if it has swap. What filesystem are you using? Where did you install the swap space and why? How did you configure it? Do you have any clue why it might be swapping even though there's free RAM available? Did you try to troubleshoot this? Are you absolutely sure it's a Gentoo bug and not a config issue?Gentoo can be installed on basically anything if you know your way around, if you want to make it ultra minimal you can avoid installing Portage or the toolchain altogether (only updating from the host machine) and only emerge minimal binaries needed for the system to function.
>>108935456alpine linux and the sway wayland compositor
>>108937161I did all that, I was using a binhost because of how slow the machine is. The kernel was the issue, it filled the RAM with cached data and everything I tried to run ground to a halt. Are you saying I should just turn swap off?
>>108935649>>108935891I think you're overreacting a little, yeah you ain't watching 4K videos on this thing, but Q4Os or Puppy Linux will allow you to like, write Python scripts, use yt-dlp and some basic frontend work at least, also some word processing with LibreOffice or more efficiently with Pandoc. There're even some modded Minecraft versions that run in that hardware. As high as 1.12. I play this in some 2013 ewaste:https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding-java-edition/minecraft-mods/1294926-themastercavers-world
>>108935456I have similar specs (celeron with 4gb ram, although I have pretty good graphics) and I use artix with i3wm. MATE is also pretty easy on the ram and artix has packages for CAFE, the continuation of MATE (which itself is the continuation of gnome 2). I also only have about 32 gigs usable storage so it's pretty light on that.
