I used to have an IBM 5250 and a DEC VT420 on my desk at my old job where I managed several Unix servers. Terminal emulation software was still ridiculously expensive, but I finally talked them into buying a site license for Hummingbird Exceed.

>DEC
In the early 00s, I had a DEC server mainboard go out, which shut down half the office. I was barely out of high school and the designated computer guy but I didn't know shit. Called for support (I think Compaq/HP was doing it by then?) and a tech wasn't going to be able to get out there (stationed out of the support center an hour away in another state) for like a month. And it was going to be like $2,500 to replace the board.

So I bought the same model on eBay for like $200, it got there in less than 2 weeks, I hooked the drives up, and that one lived long enough to be naturally decommissioned when we switched to different software with an NT server backend a few years later.

Rip out its guts, and rig up some microcontrollers to virtualize what limited performance it has on to a remote system, maybe to offload small tasks.

if it works in business it is

normal components have 0 - 80 000 hours in spec time

I kind of like the 60s smart home future aesthetic. I want a touch screen ultrawide monitor as a home assistant dashboard with a retro theme. I'm getting kind of sick of all the glassy, clean, material design dashboards everyone seems to generate with AI.

At my last workplace they still had a dot matrix printer for receiving NOAA weather reports. There was an identical spare printer down in storage and one of the engineers had to source ribbons for it now and then.

There are terminals that mimic CRTs in all colors you want.
If you just want a complete desktop theme that's also easy (if you aren't using Windows 11)

Nice. Hope that got you in tight with management. Saved them money and downtime.

My dad's cousin was their last CEO. I was a year away from finishing my CS degree when they sold out to Compaq. I majored in CS specifically because he said I had a job waiting for me after I graduated. Feltbadman.

It pretty well solidified my "computer guy" status in the local office, and ultimately stuff like that led me to my current position in the company home office.

Here's a relic from the DEC era. I keep meaning to hang it on the wall, but I can't decide if the patina should remain untouched or if I should clean it up.

I seem to remember them issuing a press release by courier pigeon that they were moving from this system to a 386 with Windows 3.11 later this year.

Patina is what's on silver coins anon.
This is just fast food grease.
Nice keyboard but you should clean it.
