Why does /g/ hate Pine? The most specific thing I've heard is that the apps suck. What does that mean, exactly? DRM? Limited APIs? Lack of developer support? If it's just that there aren't many apps, I can live with that. I'll be developing my own apps anyway.

Install ubuntu touch

I like the idea behind the company, but everything they release if half-baked, and I am not willing to put in the work to make it work.

/g/ is all about consooming. Pine devices often aren't the most consoomer friendly.

Based, I'll likely be contributing once the new pinetime releases

I don't have an issue with someone trying to sell more open devices. did actually buy the Pinephone Pro, just to try to show my support. The battery didn't last a day, without even much use at all. And there were a lot of things that either didn't work or didn't work properly. I couldn't use it as a daily driver, it just gathered dust.

I think that they should revise their business model. Maybe the kickstarter type project funding to let them raise some money for prototypes but then do it in a very staggered way. I.e. only release to a small group of hackers (the kind that enjoy reverse engineering things and tweaking) first. Then when there is at least some stability, maybe even some hardware refinements based on feedback, then you can start to sell a version of it that people can just install something like postmarket OS or something like this, and just use it. It doesn't have to be perfect but at least focus on stability and for mobile devices, battery. One of the nice things about the old/modern "dumb" phones is that the battery lasts weeks. Imagine if there is something between a low end smartphone and those dumb devices, that has Linux and privacy and the battery lasts a week. I would pay more than the market rate for this.

As a non programmer I see a lot of issues with the hardware. Like wifi bugs or battery life being totally shit because the modem pulls 10x what it should at idle.
I'd buy one and have it be my secondary phone to beta test apps or frontends. I'm not going to pay for prebuilt hardware then have to troubleshoot bugs or firmware issues with said hardware.
Also the pinecube was one of the coolest projects they ever built and it's been dead for 6 years.
