I went out of my way to buy a 720p device simply because I wanted the extra battery life. This isn't exactly a "fad" either, since even the Galaxy Note 4 (with eMMC storage and 3GB of RAM) had a 1440p panel well over a decade ago.

I'd probably get a 480p device if they were more common, but 720p is the bare minimum offered by most US retailers. My desktop monitor is 1200p and I have a 4K TV, I know that resolution is important... it's just, I don't think human eyes have changed since Steve Jobs claimed 300 PPI was good enough.

because both consumers and manufacturers are retarded
it's as simple as that really
the average computer monitor is barely 100 ppi, and people think you're retarded if you ask for a 25" 4k monitor (which is like barely 200 ppi, still not that good), yet 300+ ppi (which is way beyond the capabilities of human vision) is standard even on the most budget of phones.
it's even more retarded when you take into account the fact that text (the thing where higher ppi are most beneficial) is (relatively to the amount of pixels) huge on phones compared to desktop/laptop computers, and as you pointed out phones are battery constrained and pushing out more pixels is just a waste of cpu/gpu cycles.
It makes absolutely 0 sense.

Just because (You) have dogshit visual acuity does not mean everyone else does. 720p just happens to align with the aging population of boomers who have blurry vision in general. Some people noticed how incredibly pixilated 720p phone display look like and opt for 1080p or 1440p.

I like smooth, high dpi text.
Most people seem to even if they don't know why.

Marketing and culture of consumerism, western economy stands on people continuously buying more and of course companies gladly oblige them decades of marketing and conditioning people to want more, more resolution, more storage, more screen, more products at hand, more apps, more subscriptions, more product, more spending. The disdain autists have for normalfags is not a complete meme it often really feels like majority of people are just husks with no consciousness no sense of self or the world around them they're like animals just goinf by the id with no rhyme or reason

>thinks you can assess image quality on resolution alone without accounting for screen size (and thus ppi)
retard, I bet you typed this dumb retarded bullshit on a <150 ppi computer monitor (way less than most 720p phones)
>>108945045
pretty much same retardation here
fonts on a phone screen already take up a huge amount of pixels, a 720p/200 ppi phone screen already has extremely smooth text, way smoother than once again, the average computer screen (or television).
People just can't seem to understand the concept that the average 720p phone screen (based on ppi) is the equivalent of a 4k monitor or an 8k television when it comes to text rendering, it's ridiculous.

>the average 720p phone screen (based on ppi) is the equivalent of a 4k monitor or an 8k television when it comes to text rendering
actually scrap that, I was being way too pessimistic here...
a 6.1" 828p iPhone XR is a whopping 326 ppi, when you take into account the fact that once again, font size is huge relative to actual screen area on a phone, an 8k 25 inch monitor (352 ppi) would still be (technically) drastically inferior to that "shitty" 720p phone screen, when it comes to smoothness of text.
the more examples I think of, the more retarded this gets.

>720p
it looks like shit
