Video game pause key
>>
>>108945145
just pressed this for the first time... what did it do?
>>
>>108945145
You press it when you're tired and need a break.
>>
>>108945167
Really irks me that so many games ignore it.
>>
>>108945145
Some old games actually would pause if you press it. And I don't remember what "break" does. Some DOS shit.
>>
doesn't matter, it's part of the ansi standard and some obscure shit expects it's special keystroke thing. I am tired of zoomer engineers dropping keys they don't use ... just give me a FULL ansi tlk for god's sake. looking at you logitech. Likewise, DON NOT DROP THE FRIGGING LEDs. I want my obscure firmware flashers to be able to tell me whether or not they hung the machine and bricked the device.

kino. I will never stop expecting that one day the fn key of a new keyboard just shifts the f-row to f13 to f24. a perfect world without "media keys"...
>>
>>108945263
In older unixes break traditionally sent SIGHUP to the shell, which would kill all running jobs and log the user out IIRC.
>>
>>108945302
I use media keys all the time though, pretty comfy.
still, I have principles.

And check out those unmarked meta-keys... A real hottie that one.

it might actually do something with lineprinter

Just remap it in software to something you'll use
>>
>>108945373
which loops back to the issue of hardware devs deciding to fuck with the ansi standard nowadays.
people started developing hardware around their software use cases when that was the reason for freezing all these nonsensically labeled ibm/dos keys and their idiosyncratic behaviors in the ansi layout ... ugh.

Can I remap the stupid FN key on my keyboard yet?

Use case for "use case" threads?
>>

I remember using it on some programs that had a lot of scrolling text back on the DOS days, but no idea if there's anything that uses it these days.

If you're running a Windows OS, hold down the Windows key and then press the Pause key.

I re-bound it be a media play/pause key instead. In the 6 years since, I have not needed the actual PAUSE key for a single thing.

You can pause with Esc in most games, even older ones. Or P in some of them.

You mean Unix diamond keys.
Meta keys need to be OS-agnostic.

Well ideally the mechanical keyboard market would offer this layout for MX switches, but if you want a traditional IBM style keyboard you're stuck with Model F repros since everyone insists on doing faggoty ass 96%, 108 key or 60% memes ad nauseam.

Generally speaking, the "Break" and "SysRq" parts of the keys were always secondary Alt functions that ceased to serve a purpose once the whole OS interrupt concept got abandoned, and on the Model M these legends were printed on the side, so technically the Pause/Break legend is incorrect and it should only say "Pause".

I use headphones and my mic is good and actually in front of my mouth instead of 5cm from my keyboard (which is also not a loud mechanical model).

The 11 year old inside (my basement) wants my battlestation to look like a fucking aircraft control tower, but the same 11 year old (in myself) has a tepid iq and could probably control their entire life with an N64 controller

Yep, ~$500 minus shipping and replacement parts and you're on your own when something doesn't work.

A lot for a keyboard, a bargain for a Model F Battleship.
