It all makes sense when you realize that Framework laptops are just Macbooks for manchildren.
Actual people who need an actual x86 laptops already had Thinkpads, Elitebooks and Latitudes.
>>
the point is that it fits more sleekly in a bag and on your lap when it's one device and nothing is poking out. having stuff dangling off of your device is jank
>>
>>108957128
You know what's even better than dongles? Having enough baked in I/O that there's no need for dongles. Kinda like what every x86 laptop has been doing, including Macbooks after the USB-C only I/O experiment failed.
>>
>>108957049
No laptop makes sense in 2026. It was fun in 80's, 90's and even early 2000's, when portable computers could not yet fit in your pocket.
Nowadays if your own a laptop, it means you're a nomad, you don't have a home with a table and a chair and a big monitor.
You have to be on the move, all your possesions fit in several bags, you basically own as much as random homeless person.
Then you probably should own a laptop, I can't blame you.
But if you're not like that and you own a laptop, then you're an idiot. You are ruining your health for no reason when you use it. It is only justifiable in special cases, when you're looking for a job and moving from place to place because there are no jobs in your location, so before you relocate you live in hotels, motels, your car etc. That is understandable.
But when you are settled, why would you want a laptop? Think about it. It's the stupidest desicion in your life if you get one when you already have a stable job, a house and want to not feel the pain in your neck everyday.

does your shit laptop have 4 total thunderbolt ports? no? didnt think so
>>

>>
>>108957007
It makes sense whenever a port fucks up and you can just replace it for $9
>>
>>108957228
>4 total thunderbolt ports
Wanna know why? Because it dedicates 2-3 bandwidth's worth of Thunderbolt for actually useful I/O instead of gimping it so that the manufacturer can sell me overpriced proprietary dongles instead.
>>
>>108957256
then the port you plug this shit in dies
>>
>>108957007
What bothers the fuck out of me is that they don't sell one with two USB-C ports, this shit is a dongle anyways so why not make it useful? They could easily fit 2 into one.
Imagine paying 10 bucks for a USB-C port extension.
If Framework didn't have these retarded modules I would probably have given them a chance.
>>

sure, but it was okay when project ara did it
>>
>>108957269
Not likely.
The entire point is that you save plug cycles and general wear and tear on the dongle while the actual mobo port is unaffected.

USB-C must be fucking godly if not a single soul can envision how Framework's dongles can avoid needing mobo replacement or micro soldering for port damage.
It's literally one of the most common repairs in laptops.
>>
>>108957007
I agree but did a thread have to die for this
Reminds me of this youtuber who was saying this is a better solution compared to dongles especially since he can carry his spare modules and swap them
Dude thats just dongles
Neat idea but practically speaking this should just be one slot. I miss expresscard.

>>
>>108957007
thats the whole point its an integrated dongle so you can run USB A/C or all display output or whatever you want
>>108957284
its too small to fit 2 usbc connectors. i do think if they really wanted they could design their storage expansion cards to also have a USBA/C connector so you could combine extra storage with usb with an internal usb switch

i have a feeling that this should have been in a form of a daughterboard and some sort of io shield equivalent to cover it

also it is just me thing but that dongle approach gives it a feeling of toy made for the sake of consumerism
i have no logical explanation to it nor i am willing to explain why but i'd take pinebook more serious than that unironicallly
>>
>>108957007
It doesn't stick out, and that makes all the difference.

>>108957180
True. I think the 16 went too far by making you use up a slot for the headphone jack. The smaller models just have an integrated jack because it's fucking sensible.

>>108957223
Holy lack of imagination. Even at home, I like having my laptop on the shitter (with a dinky table I can pull over), and I've got a nice external monitor on my desk. Then there's going out and traveling.
>>
>>108957228
>>108957268

only apple gives you a separate tb controller per port, intel scams you with one controller and shared bandwidth between ports and amd doesn't have thunderbolt support at all
>>

it feeds a bit into a fantasy where everything is usb-c

>>
>>108957284
the usb-c expansion card has an additional fuse set in it, you can always run without it and raw dog the port, nobody is stopping you

the whole point is that you can damage that expansion card and not damage the actual laptop usb-c and have to resolder SMT

I wouldn't expect unemployed /g/tards to understand this though, they've never repaired a laptop in their life
>>
>>108957011

>>108957180
baking I/O is retarded when ports change and underlying bandwidth changes

USB-C is just a hardware contract for a physical port.

The chips behind it can get faster, as can the devices that hook up to it.

Framework chassis' from 2021 will still be usable in 2030 with a simple and cheap mainboard swap. and then you just swap the expansion cards when the protocols update, so you aren't stuck with DP 1.4 or HDMI 2.0, you can use DP 2.1, etc.

When you can also use the same expansion cards on your Framework Desktop you don't have to re-buy ports.

The problem with the FW desktop is the lack of RAM slots, which was so fucking retarded on their part. They should have gone with Intel ironically enough, anybody buying a desktop machine doesn't want soldered RAM.
>>

Are Framework laptops even good?
The quality feels like it's straight from chinkshit, hell even lower.
>>
>>108958034
The RJ45 card is fine, I have two of them. I keep one in my bag for when I need to hardwire.

You aren't supposed to keep it in your laptop 100% of the time. I keep my extra just connected to the ethernet cable on my desk.

The only problem I have with them is that they're overpriced, the 10gbe is exorbitant at $80
>>
>>108958063
>Are Framework laptops even good?
They're VASTLY overpriced for the gimmick of an easy-to-repair laptop.

>t. Own a first-batch 16 that has thermal issues that the Jeet refuses to acknowledge

They're a boutique laptop with a gimmick that other laptop manufacturers are starting to copy (even Thinkpads), slowly.

You're paying for essentially a start-up.
>>

how poor are you? My 7640U was like ~$400 at preorder time. I reused my SSD and bought cheap RAM (pre-RAMpocalypse) and spent like $300 less than buying a new 7640U machine. and I got to keep my keyboard layout. I hate learning a new keyboard on each laptop refresh, it's annoying af

>>108958049
I've already repaired CPU fans on three boards and resold them. The "first-attempt" 11th gen shipped with a hardware RTC bug that I've fixed on a bunch of boards and resold for decent profit.

Framework has literally made my computing experience free with less than 10 hours of work and $20 of thermal paste (of which I have 80% left). You can't do this with Apple devices, you're literally locked out from fixing them considering the component pairing requirement.

>>108958063
they had very little money to start with and couldn't even CNC the thing in the beginning, I would only buy a Framework Pro now assuming you have money. Don't even waste your time on the original model, it was developed as a compromise because a lack of seed capital. even the original model beats chinkshit though.

>>108958077
you can buy used ones on eBay or FW marketplace and pay 30-50% less for older hardware. I buy broken mainboards on ebay all the time and repair and sell, if I wanted to put together a $400 FW I could easily with used parts

>>108958131
you can always repurpose the old mainboard as a desktop though
I use my old 12th gen board as a plex server
>>
>>108957180
>after the USB-C only I/O experiment failed.
they still only have USB-C, they just did the smart thing of adding magsafe back (removing it was the dumbest thing theyve ever done) and they added the SD card slot back. You still need a dongle or an adapter to use any normal USB device
>>108957049
this

>>108958242
the Pro models have HDMI tardo

funny part is only recently did they actually start supporting HDMI 2.1. I can't imagine spending $4000 on a machine that can only do HDMI 2.0, partly because I own a Framework and can just swap my ports whenever I feel like it. adapt or die nigger

phones are shitty cheap devices, if apple could have sold a headphone jack addon instead of a dongle, they probably would have made more money with the iPhone 7
>>
>>108957007
To play devils advocate here, every time you plug or unplug a socket it becomes less effective at it's job. Even mag safe port contacts will eventually wear out. When they do on a traditional laptop, your 90% screwed as most USB-C is now tied directly to the motherboard, so you have to get a new motherboard rather than just a new port. The idea with the modules here was that the base port will have a drastically less amount of plug ins, meaning that by the time the outer plug fails, the inner one will still be damage free.
Older laptops, like Thinkpads and Latitudes just added more ports, in home that if one USB failed, others would be there to take it's place.
>why not just use a dongle then?
You can! Pretty much every laptop port will benefit from an adaptor as it prevents the inner port from being overused. The biggest problem with external adaptors is form factor and damage resistance. (i.e if the item is dropped)

>>108959142
I think the largest negative industrial trend is the rejection of standardized parts and the worry about bulkiness. I've recently found a few computers with breakout boards (which connect the internal usb hub to the motherboard via ribbons) which do a better job than external boards in a lot of cases. The largest issue with modular devices is compatibility. If the device's parts are all proprietary to the manufacture then the user may end up paying more than just throwing out the model entirely. The same issue plagues the rugged luggable sector of computing as well. Each generation and model share nothing from prior generations and part support is slim to none. Compare that to 20-30 years ago where resistors, bands, screws and cables were all fairly easy to find at your local Radio Shack. I think most people who want modular devices are looking for the mobility to upgrade them at a cheaper cost than buying new.

Even worse. The fuck are you gonna use laptop for while traveling? Imagine pulling it out while in taxi or something. It's just awkward and stupid.
Face it. Laptops should not exist. Office dwellers can do their power point presentations with tablets over wireless. You have laptop because of the shills, not because you need one.

>every time you plug or unplug a socket it becomes less effective at it's job
this applies to the internal facing USB-C end of a framework
and a lot of people who rave about it also mention them swapping the dongles regularly
so they can actually wear out their ports without even having to plug in anything

and thats okay they can just replace the whole motherboard instead of learning how to solder
