I can’t believe I’m typing this, but today I was let go from a role after about a year, and the feedback surprised me enough that I’m curious whether others are seeing the same thing.

For context, I have 14+ years of experience as a software engineer.
Most of my career has been spent building backend systems, leading teams, designing architecture, troubleshooting production issues, and delivering software in more traditional engineering environments.

The feedback I received was essentially: “You’re an exceptional software engineer, but a mediocre AI-prompting software engineer.”

The company is heavily embracing AI-assisted development and apparently felt that my effectiveness with AI tools wasn’t where they wanted it to be.

What’s interesting is that this wasn’t framed around code quality, system design, delivery, reliability, communication, or any of the areas I’ve historically been evaluated on. The discussion centered almost entirely around how effectively I was leveraging AI.

Working in an office for the first time in close to a decade really highlights my social issues. Cannot talk to people to save my life. Hear strangers start a conversation and it seems so easy. Everyone here is so nice and they keep trying to talk to me and I give them nothing back. And there’s so many people. One after the other, they try, realize I’m a lost caused, and give up. They ask questions and I give direct closed responses. They make jokes and I look stern because I didn’t notice it was a joke. At best I manage to ask a couple small talk question back but lose steam quickly.

Have a week long conference. Practically a giant mixer to get to know some people. Today was day 1 and I failed. Tomorrow’s going to be the day I actually manage a conversation right? I’m not forever going to be the weirdo that makes everyone uncomfortable right?

yeah, that tracks.
ai is a game changer, and choosing to not learn to prompt is like choosing to not learn excel.
you might think that's wrong, but it doesn't matter what you think.
don't believe me?
start a boutique programming company and try not to use ai.
you'll be out of business in no time flat.

>be me
>work at company for just shy of 2 years, it's a smaller company and most of my coworkers live across the world (only me and maybe 2 or 3 team members usually in office, and even then barely)
>fiancee has to move ~3 hours away and wants me to follow
>ask to go remote because i still like working for the company and don't want to find another job after working for a long time to get this one (albeit with no experience)
>get told either i have to stay at the office or prepare to find another job by the time my 2 years rolls around
What do I do? I can either stay behind without my fiancee and not have to job hunt, or take the plunge and go searching in another market with at least some ample time before then (~4 months). If I stay, it's likely I'll be living alone and apartments in my area are really hard to afford. My pay isn't great as is but I'm wondering if the risk is too much to overcome. However, I'd be searching for a job with way more experience than when I started, and since my team is tiny and company is newer I've worked a lot of different things.
>>
>>108960552
Damn, that's a tough spot to be in, bro. On one hand, staying might mean loneliness and financial stress, especially with the apartment prices, but it keeps your job security intact and you avoid the hassle of job hunting while still trying to build your career. On the other, following your fiancée could open new doors and give you a fresh start, but it’s a risk, especially if you’re jumping into a new market with no guarantee of a better gig. Honestly, if your current job gives you some flexibility and you’re willing to risk a short-term grind, I’d say go for the move, especially since you’ve gained a lot of experience in a short time. Worst case, you find a better job after a few months, and best case, you get to be with your girl and start fresh somewhere new. Just weigh the risk vs reward and remember, sometimes you gotta take the leap if you want a shot at something better.
>>
>>108960552
I had a similar situation years ago. I stayed behind until I found a job in her city - I think this was the best outcome, and we are married now. I pray you will figure it out.

Thanks. Looking at the other city, there is *some* opportunity, and I think another facet of this equation is that it's unlikely my current job will raise my pay substantially, so jumping to another company who will start out even higher may be the move.
>>
>>108960283
the entirety of the stock market is valued on AI companies

other companies that have shareholders that are heavily invested in AI see it as a way of increasing "underlying value" in both the AI companies and the company you work for

therefore, if you aren't making the AI seem more valuable, or at least laundering that value by making prompts to fool them, you're actively working against them

that's why you got fired, it doesn't matter how skilled you are since the AI model will be better in a year and probably replace you anyway. it's all about how well you are feeding the model, not how much value you return to the company itself

That feedback is surreal. To have a 14-year career built on architecture, system reliability, and leadership reduced to "AI prompting efficiency" is a bizarre sign of the times. You are not alone, but you’ve hit the bleeding edge of a highly concentrated industry trend.
### The Industry Split
Right now, there is a distinct schism in engineering cultures:
* **The Hyper-Optimizers:** Some companies value raw code volume over system design. They want **orchestrators** to churn out boilerplate via tools like Cursor or Copilot. To them, careful, manual engineering looks "slow," even if the resulting architecture is vastly superior.
* **The Pragmatic Majority:** Mature organizations still evaluate you on *outcomes*—reliability, velocity, and soundness. They care that the system works and scales, not whether you whispered the perfect prompt to get there.
### Misunderstanding Seniority
Your leadership team confused **code generation velocity** with **engineering capacity**.
Your value lies in knowing *what* to build, *how* it breaks, and how it scales. AI is excellent at syntax, but terrible at architectural foresight, subtle race conditions, and deep domain logic. Optimizing for "prompting efficiency" values short-term output over long-term systemic health.
### Moving Forward
1. **Separate Worth from the Metric:** Being labeled a "mediocre prompter" doesn't diminish your capability. It just means you didn't optimize for a specific, arguably short-sighted corporate mandate. Your backend and debugging expertise remain incredibly scarce, premium skills.
2. **Screen Future Teams:** Use this to vet your next role. Ask: *"How does the team balance AI tool utilization with deep architectural design and long-term maintainability?"*
Take a breath, shake off the absurdity of their phrasing, and find an organization that values a foundational architect over a fast typist.

try to figure out how to work with low power agents you can run with your VRAM
(getting gpus and running them in parallel could also be a fun side project if you have the cash)
Copilot already started charging per token yesterday, all other services will follow suit and only increase their prices more
Don't rely on any of these services for your work
I predict in the future companies will be looking for people that know how to work with agents more economically to limit context windows and token burn

it's a small ass thing but starting to get annoyed with our level 1 IT at our company doing "Enter your description of your issue" -> get them in the chat -> "Hi, welcome to the help desk, how can I assist you today?" feels like I'm losing my damn mind working here and I really want to go for 1-2 week break (probably told this here before) but last few weeks I've been covering my coworkers stuff and the big boss been like "thanks to everyone covering! if you have any automation ideas to streamline (X) and (Y)'s work, let me know!". They did the same shit last year and (X) back then got laid off.
I'm straight tweaking on almost every email though, people give so little information, they're vague, using the wrong process, they don't know what the fuck they want and I keep getting dragged into chaos. Then when I do shit people go "DURRR IM RETARDED I DUNNO WHAT IM DOING." "Did I help? :D"

its so sad people do this. 0 tact "networking" where they just add you and soft beg for a job. no i do not know anybody who is hiring. no i do not have any advice. wait actually, my only advice is to use that little brain of yours to find a career that doesnt have every fucking retarded zoomer in the world trying to pursue it.

>ohhh but i have passion, i actually like tech. im actually smart
no you dont, no you arent. you are average. employers dont care how LE PASSIONATE you are. employers are committing h1b fraud and hiring in network only, or extremely experienced individuals within their exact tech stack.

picture in 2 circles in your head. one circle is much larger than the other. how do you fit the large circle into the small circle without intersecting the edges or changing the shape? now imagine the large circle was the amount of retards with CS degrees, and the small circle was the amount of available jobs for the next 10 years.

ok maybe that analogy was too complicated. imagine the job market was a game of musical chairs. it's the first round of the musical chairs. there's 10 times more people than chairs. the music stops and you find out almost half of the people (actual study data btw) that sat were indians. better luck next time you stupid fuck.

with all that being said, to any anons studying cs reading this, i dont mean you of course. you are le pessionate and le talented (despite no evidence in your life ever pointing to anything liek this). take out 40k of debt to study computer science. its the best decision you will ever make.

this is such a common thing teenagers and young adults do. they want to pretend they are seeking out information and advice like theyre using it to analyze their choices. what theyre actually doing is looking to reaffirm a decision that isnt good. they probably know it isnt a good decision too but theyre overriding it mentally.
there are people in these very threads who often ask advice relating to it and just ignore it completely. theres probably a dude in here right now who is probably on his first year of CS who is just riding it out like its a winning lotto ticket. no amount of information could convince him to change careers. when he graduates hes going to saddled with crazy debt and end up working something completely unrelated.
its so stupid it bothers me. middle class retard shit. if they grew up in poverty they would know never to do something this retarded and get serious about life.

>ETFs are baskets of stocks or bonds that trade like regular stocks. They're usually passively managed, meaning they seek only to match the underlying benchmark index.
i.e. a bunch of faggots picked the stocks for you. Sometimes they use meme lists like the S&P 500 stock market index (pic rel).
Pick one US or world ETF, like the ones from Vanguard. And go all in. The idea is to leave it there for months at least, ideally years.

am i retarded or just coping since i think that saving significant amount of money for retirement seems pointless? i see people hoping to retire on like a few million in their 30s and i'm thinking there's no way that can allow you to live for the next 70 years without providing any benefit to the economy aside from sitting on your wealth. i mean i'm sure it's possible if you are incredibly smart with investment but i don't think chucking your entire net worth into gold and the S&P500 will work out in the long term

like i think eventually the boomers and gen x will start liquidating their assets in an attempt to keep living via expensive medical care, which i assume will be such an influx of liquidity that we will see the past 20 years of various quantitative easing and deficit spending shenanigans materialize into its true endgame form, which i believe is just pure, unadulterated common inflation. at around the same time, millenials and gen Z (who generally don't own shit) will become the biggest voting block and they'll vote in laws that favor them. and imo that would mean a long downtrend in asset prices or uptrend in real costs like labor and stuff, whichever way you prefer to look at it

they do. refer to the circle analogy if understanding demand is too complicated. something like half of all cs grads are unemployed or underemployed.

>Protip: people are retiring all the time including now
ok here are my protips:
1) the average baby boomer is only 69 years old. they haven't even begun to get truly fucked up from old age
2) there are a lot of baby boomers and gen x. they are 40% of the population. and boomers alone have 50% of the wealth in the country.
3) medical science has advanced and will continue to advance to the point that old people won't just croak from a random flu or cancer or something, instead they'll get treatment and continue to live older and older, also becoming more and more reliant on treatment. we are going to see the percentage of retired people increase because people will keep retiring but will generally stop dying

desu i don't really expect you to be like "huh i guess you have a point". 90% of the time i show like really obvious facts that anyone can look up, and apply basic causality and logic with them, people tend to reject them wholesale and will call me a tranny or something. because using logic instead of going by vibes is considered gay among a number of parts in the world

You're kind of right on 3, but if you look at life expectancy charts the US has been stagnating for the past 15 years (and in fact went way down 4 years ago). Probably going to rise though

For 1 and 2 you'd have to prove to me that it's significantly different from 10 or 20 years ago because just throwing numbers out of context doesn't give me much
>>
>>108965237
life expectancy dropped mostly because of overdose deaths and automobile deaths. overdose deaths rose to something ridiculous like >100k yearly in the late 2010s. its gone down but people are still dropping like flies. automobile deaths have gone up considerably and this continues to rise. despite all of the safety improvements since the 70s, our vehicle fatality rates are higher now. a lot of that is because of dumb junkies and people texting while driving. some of it is the rising popularity of car culture with young brown people. they like to race.
