The hard disk survived but it required some trace repair since the connector was ripped out. Unfortunately I forgot to take any photos of the repair.
I'm currently ddrescue-ing the drive.

why? there's nothing interesting usually

I'm doing it just in case. Since the console has no BT and no BD, there might be problems with installing new firmware so I want to preserve the existing drive contents as best as I can

I'm a complete dunce for throwing out the entire BD disc assembly. Now that I think about it, I could get away with replacing just the reading lased head. I'll need to buy a new drive. I did preserve the drive mainboard, though.

Curiously enough, the drop caused all of its games to magically disappear... as if they were never there toegin with.

wait what, lol

Doesn't matter, if the PS3 can't boot. The PS3 has a propertary encryption that locks the drive similar to the OG X-box.

Just unlock the OG X-box, I don't think the PS3 drive-keys have been unlocked yet?

(Note: This doesn't apply if the PS3 boots and you're putting the drive back in)

Ukraine launched a PS3 at anon and nearly killed him. He is now attempting to reverse engineer the drone so he can send it back, with love.

They should make touch screens from HDD platters.

Just wait until you hear the best part, this Sony console dropped with a game.
>it had a copy of Battlefield BC2 inside
>>

I remember your last thread anon, I can't believe you're still attempting to repair this thing kek. Did you ever go back for the button or whatever you were missing?

OP literally has nothing better else to do if he's trying to rescue dumpster dived PS3s that Gamestop wouldnt even finesse you out of.

Probably not a problem if you hack it and install a specific BD free version of Evil Nat. Your main goal is to boot that sumovabitch up and have it run on idle

Unbelievable. FUCKING UNBELIEVABLE. There were 0 bad blocks and I was able to make a full copy of the disc. I don't know how, but I guess I would attribute that to the MASSIVE metal midframe/IO shield that's so thick I couldn't beat it into shape with a hammer. And this further reinforces my theory that the height at which it was dropped was not as big as I initially thought.
>>108964583
At least it wasn't a shovel or a washing machine. Who knows what'd happen if one of those was dropped instead...
>>108964811
Nope, guess I'll have to hack one in for the time being.

This is the first thing I'm going to do. Then I'll probably dump the root key and extract the owner's PSN e-mail from the emage so that I can mail him his saves and words of wisdom that he should dump his bpdemon GF ASAP or something like that.

Anyways, the grinding pen arrives on July 4. I'll try to source a PC power supply tomorrow since I don't think it's worth it to try and restore the PS3 PSU after the damage it sustained.
Also, I'm NOT a complete moron and I didn't discard the remains of the BD drive. It can be rebuilt for cheap, it just needs a new magnetic topside disc retention piece, new rails (old ones are fucking bent) and a new optical pickup. The last two come as one piece that's much cheaper than the entire BD-450 disc drive unit, and I think I can find the magnetic piece for cheap too. But I'm only going to invest in restoring that drive once this thing boots.
The fan seems to be kind of bent too, I'll have to use some washers to install it so that it doesn't scrape against the metal plate of the cooler.

PS3 drives can be read if you extract the per-console keys.
>>
>>108962331
bullshit, how the fuck did the drive survive a 4-story tall fall
>>
>>108966378
I have no idea. It was parked and the supet thick metal midframe took most of the damage. I swear to God, these things are built like tanks.
By the way, it didn't technically survive the fall. The SATA connector was busted and one of the pads was ripped so I had do do some trace repair and transplant the connector and a single data line filter capacitor from a broken drive I had lying around.
>>
>>108966420
it's amazing how both the platters survived and the heads didn't get fucked. keep us posted, anon. between the consoom posts and the ai slop this is the best thread on /gee/
>>
>>108966378
Considering how anon's PS3 has a broken PSU and a bluray it's obvious the rest of the machine absorbed the fall. They acted as cushions.
>>
>>108966477
what took the hit was the corner of the board with the BT module and the power plug on it. while it's close to the hard drive the metal midframe and the rest of the components were just enough to cushion the wall.
disc drive was right beside the HDD and what really puzzles me is that the disc drive is kind of fucked (eject/pull mechanism is sound but the optical pickup is destroyed and its rails are slightly bent), but the hard disk survived. maybe I caused the damage to the BD drive at some point? I dunno
