Shortly after the AI bubble started taking off, bot traffic got much worse so now every site ever takes a long time to load because of client-side js proof-of-work challenges. And WAFs got so much more aggressive that you can often get blocked or rate limited as a legit user.

It's stupid but what's the alternative? The internet is a big mess. You can't even run your own benevolent crawlers that respect every web standard in existence unless you put in a lot of money and go through lots of red tape.

Many crawlers don't even give a fuck and ignore basic things like robotstxt and spoof their user agent, like Brave's.

I don't run any websites atm, I quit webshit a while ago. But you'd be surprised at how expensive serving traffic is for many websites, either because they're poorly made or because of where and how they're hosted.

For example take a look at how prohibitively expensive egress traffic is in most big tech cloud platforms. Like it's legit a scam. If you serve any sort of dynamic content that can't get cached or you forgot or failed to cache something perfectly somewhere, and you get a sudden spike of bot traffic, it can easily cost you hundreds or thousands in a single day. Just do the math.

That's just in network egress costs, not considering autoscaling or CPU burst or whatever resource you need more of temporarily. And if you don't enable those things, your site will temporarily stop working and you really don't want that in case it was legitimate traffic and not bots. And many retards use proprietary vendor-specific solutions that are 10x to 100x more expensive than unmanaged ones.

Trust me I know. I spent a few years working as a freelancer focusing just on unfucking peoples unholy webprojects that started to somehow run into the four to five figure monthly cost range for something that shouldn't need more than a few VPS and it's always a fucking skill issue. Frameworks upon frameworks shooting off a billion requests on each page load, sending uncompressed 20mb PNGs for tiny graphics that should have been a vector at most. Insane shit.
