ITT: solved technology

What model leatherman is that? I want one with scissors
>>
>>108974386
Leatherman Surge. It's a biggun. The Leatherman Arc also has scissors, but it's more pricey.
>>
>>108974386
Surge, says on the handle. It's a huge heavy fucker, definitely not for pocket carry. It's smaller EDC brother is the Wave Plus but it has smaller scissors, the Surge is the heavy duty model.
>>
>>108973893
I never use those tools and when I do its generally a pain the ass. I have like 5 of them. They're always gifts.

>in other words, so finished it stops having to move at all
I mean, what fucking kikery made this no longer the default end goal for everything? Move fast, break things, sell new things next quarter? Fuck that!

Solved technology made complicated. The Manger was the perfect daily toolset, and it was discontinued. Now you have a bunch of aftermarket scales, mainly for the Rambler, to add the pen as well as the ability to keep more tools in the scales. Getting a Rambler with scales that have a pen, as well as slots for the toothpick, tweezers and the needle, would get you the ideal set for a keychain lifesaver.

Too bad Victorinox refuses to release that as a dedicated product though, so you have to mod a Rambler yourself!

Thank you for the info friends. I'll do my further research.
>says on the handle
Sorry, it's late night in here and I'm a bit tired so my attention is low.
>>
>>108974469
It's a pretty good tool. I also got a set of Galvanox flat bits, as well as a bit extender with a ratchet driver to get more utility out of it. The plan is to have a pouch stuffed with genuinely useful tools like this to have a mini-toolkit to bag or belt carry. I already managed to put together an entire bed with the Surge and a Cobra XS so, y'know, it's not that dumb of an idea, these do work and come in useful.
>>
>>108974469
I'd also recommend looking into Victornox's Swiss Tool and Swiss Tool X. They have great scissors.
>>
what feature does that g-shock have that warrants using it over a cheaper f-91w?
>>
>>108973893
resin watch straps are trash, guaranteed to degrade and break far sooner than the timepiece itself
nylon loop band with metal hook is far superior
>>
>>108974530
>G-Shock, so 10 bar waterproof, 10 meter fall damage proof, 10 year battery life, but ofc it can withstand more than that
>Multi Band 6, automatically syncs with time signals, so no worries about leap years or DST
>Tough Solar, so you have a battery that'll last longer than 10 years and you can go harder on the backlight since it's rechargable (also doubles as a light sensor for auto-backlight)
>Timer, a QoL feature that's never been brought back to the F-91W line of modules
I upgraded to it from a F-105W (F-91W w/ EL) and I don't regret it, it takes care of itself and it's insanely reliable thanks to that radio sync. No more nannying the runaway seconds, the February leap year correction or DST adjustments. The only downside is the brutally quiet beeper, but I've heard that the (more expensive) all-steel Made in Japan equivalent, GW-5000U, doesn't have that problem and the piezo resonates much better on that. I might get one at some point maybe.

Fun fact: one of personal G-Shock's of Kikuo Ibe, the initiator and de-facto inventor of the G-Shock, is a GW-M5600, which is the original variant of the GW-M5610U.

The first model had Multi Band 5, which didn't have the ability to receive the Chinese time signal. GW-M5610 updated it to Multi Band 6 with that functionality, and the GW-M5610U is a modern sidegrade, doing some useful QoL improvements in the watch's UI while ditching the old EL backlight for a white LED. On one hand it no longer has the same aesthetic, but on the other the LED won't burn out like EL and it does it's job just fine, it fully illuminates the face unlike the F-91W LED.

And yes I am more than aware that the inventor of the G-Shock looks like a gook from a WW2 propaganda poster.

Solar charging, radio time sync and it's rugged af
>>
>>108974386
Get a Victorinox SAK for the scissors. They are very good.
>>
>>108974573
>>108974599
fair enough. solar charging seems nice, but with a cheapo f91w you can just trim the battery retention piece to make room for a lithium cr2032 so it lasts 20 years.
the waterproof depth and fall damage is practically bs imo. I am not a diver and my pool is only 8 feet deep and shit works fine. if it falls 10 meters it's because I fell 10 meters and I am in the hospital or dead. not worth the extra bulk
the most value-added function seems to be radio time adjustment and maybe the timer. I get around no timer by just setting the alarm X minutes from now. admittedly loses second precision, but I have a kitchen timer for that. kitchen timer is another good solved tech
that's just me. I will not knock another casio watch enjoyer. enjoy your gshock and I will use the surplus f91s I can buy for the same money to improvise explosives

Which segues us to the other solved technology

The 10 meter fall is just a measure of how shock resistant it is, the idea isnt that you are supposed to fall of a ladder. My cheap G-shock has been crawling over stone and smacked against metal a ton during exercises (with face down) and no issues, a few scratches on the glass

What the hell, I never knew that was a thing, that's insanely cool. Seems like there's no such signal in my shithole country though, oh well.

Nylon straps are indestructible and they're machine washable too. I have a few that are 20 years old that look brand new. Finding good spring bars is difficult though.

Based. Zippo lighter fluid evaporates way too fast.

Isn't it just gasoline?
>>
>>108975198
It's something lighter called naphtha, and it evaporates in about a week. It's a very good solvent too, if there's something IPA won't dissolve or clean (like glue) try naphtha, they have the opposite polarity.

The springs are dogshit.
if you use a Victorinox regularly for the scissors they snap every few months.
Leatherman micras the best for similar sized scissors, but the knifes a lot smaller than a standard victorinox
>>
>>108974912
I love these fuckers, I've used the same one for just about two decades.
>>
>>108975847
I have two Victorinox SAKs and I use the scissors all the time. The spring definitely doesn't snap every few months. I've only seen it happen on one that belonged to my grandfather so I don't even know how old it was but several decades anyway. The two that I use are still just fine. Also you can buy more of them online if that would ever happen.

I have my Huntsman for 25 years and never had a broken spring. I broke the can opener using it as screw driver.
