Are there any options other than OPNsense that are worth considering for a home network/small business? It is all I use and it is all I ever see mentioned.
>>
I was on opnsense
loved everything about it
but my job is also IT
and we had some clients with sophos
sophos was for renewal and we could get good payday if we were able to replace it
I planned opnsense but picking the hardware is an issue, picked miniPC for some locations I did not care about, runned it as a VM too on regular server when I cared about..
but I said enough is enough, this cant be always this fight and uncertainty if I can get hardware or not, and how long it takes.

went with ubiquiti
replaced my home opnsense too
deployed ubiquiti at like 5 other locations
no thinking just buying 100€ UCG ultra for most
UDM for bigger locations
everyting works fine, vlans, site to site VPN, even has suricata running, geoblocking works
remote managment without much work is cherry on top

I dont feel as much in control as I did with opnsense
but its fine and I made good money from all the deployments
all the while unifi is disgustingly simple compared to time and effort I put in to opnsense

>Ubiquiti’s EdgeOS, but only those that had not changed their default administrative password
yeah, serves them right
also edgeOS is like ancient stuff
