Dark backgrounds were used because it made no sense (and still doesn't) to have the screen blast your eyes with light from background areas that don't contain any information anyway. Light mode only started becoming popular later on when computers started getting more and more popular with complex document editing and writing, then it became desirable to have WYSIWYG editor programs which replicated the look of the document printed on paper as accurately as possible.It was popular / standard for a while and then "light mode" started to decline again, because it still fundamentally makes no sense for pure computer UIs.
